*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Aside from the camera, better battery life and screen(debatable)what are the main improvements on the N86 vs the N96.

Yes I have read through this thread, just wanted to get some opinions.

Isn't the e55 considered candybar? Then there's e71 but a qwerty candy bar is not the same I guess. I think more and more folks are demanding qwerty devices. Even e55 is hybrid qwerty. I may ultimately end up with an e75. Only slide out the qwerty when needed. Best of both. A true hybrid.

Sheesh, I'm still going to wait and see how v20 turns out on the N97, but the more posts I read here the more I know I want this.

That's a really good picture for a cameraphone.

Yes I did and it still doesn't work.

A different issue I have, when I set the camera to panoramic mode, it gave me an operational error and said to restart the phone. This happened twice. I called Tech Support regarding the 2 issues I have. They have no idea what's wrong and told me to get my phone replaced. Anyone have issues when the camera is in panoramic mode?

For comparisons sake, the N85 started shipping in October of 2008 and the NAM version started shipping in December 2008. The N85, as I noted above, now sells for very close to $300 on eBay (I also see you can currently get it on Amazon for $280, after a $50 rebate). So eight months after the initial release and six months after the release of the NAM version the price has dropped to basically $300.

Given this trajectory for the N85 price, I think "at least 15 months" is a huge over-estimate. It took six to eight months for the N85 to drop to $300, why should it take the N86 twice as long?

But if thinness and sliding form factor are also a features in phones that people want, then isn't it possible that it's just not always possible to achieve every possible feature in one handset? I'm not saying it wouldn't be better to have a thicker phone or candybar phone with Xenon. It just seems like some of the qualities that people are looking for in phones aren't always easy to combine from a technical standpoint.

Nokia cleary does want to have different phones that appeal to different market segments (as all cell phone manufacturers do), but I find it hard to believe the strategy is to get people to buy multiple phones. I think those sort of people are a very small fraction of the market. Most people use a phone for about a year and half and then replace it. Those are supposed to be the statistics. Also if Nokia was holding out the Xenon, so no one handset has every feature, then why isn't there any other phone in their current line that has Xenon or will have it? Why haven't there been any phones with Xenon since the N82? It seems to me that Nokia has just decided to drop Xenon in favor of either thinness, saving space to cram other things in, or cost cutting perhaps. Maybe they found that Xenon didn't really help them sell phones, but other features do, even if some people have a strong preference for Xenon.

Hope you don't get disappointed when you get it.. As I was..

*Speaker in the back "never really like the speaker on the back like the E75"

*One lock battery door "This lock gets loose all the time on the E63 and E75, really prefer the double lock on the E71 and E66"

*Same Antenna Placement

*Same Vibrate mechanism

*Same feel as the E71

i can't wait to see some real word examples of the night photos. this very well may be my next device. I'm loving the white version for some reason.

It's about time Nokia gave some attention to the build quality of their N Series devices. I think a 2.8" screen wouldn't be too much to ask for on the N86 but I digress. I've been making do with the 2.6" screen on my N95 so I'll live.

Really? I heard great things about the Q1 from many users. I just bought it so I'll give it a try and see if it does sound robotic. I hate that. I don't know what are the differences between the Sound ID 400 and 300, but the 300 sucked. There was quite abit of static noise and the other callers were complaining about it echoing. I looked up the Plantronics 975 and a lot of people are complaining about it echoing as well. I tried a few Motorola's and people say I sound robotic. As of now I still can't find a BT headset that matches the sound quality of my Jabra JX 10 series II. But I need a new BT headset so I hope the Blueant Q1 works out. If not, I'm back to square one.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Some more thoughts after having used it for about four days:

-FM transmitter is hit or miss; works well in some situations, in others there is just so much static it's painful to listen to music.

-Build quality: greatly improved over the N95 and N85, but you can still feel the two halves tapping together in the upper portion behind the top piece. I've also had to place a small strip of paper behind the battery cover, right above the "Nokia" logo on the back to get rid of a -very- minor creaking noise that occurs while texting. Dust gets between the front glass face and the metal frame surrounding it; rather annoying, but nothing compressed air can't get rid of. Oh, and my dpad is slightly crooked

-Texting: keypad is still rather stiff, but feels good to the touch none the less. I am starting to prefer it to any other standard keyboard.

-Audio quality through the speakers is horrendous...it's barely possible to make out what is playing when the volume is turned up full blast, not to mention the speakers start crackling. The N95 sounds infinitely better in this area, as does the N97 (which has speakers of similar size).

-After having compared this to an N97 for numerous calls, I can safely say that the call quality is equal. People on the other end said that I sounded more clear on the N86.

If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask-

I am actually very excited about this phone, i love the n85 and so far the one i have the build quality is excellent, with a few more enhancements and the 8mp camera im good to go, im not a touch screen guy so all these touch screens do nothing for me, i would hope the n86 has the same integration as the n97 and if so then im in for sure. :buddies:

P.S. I also would love a higher screen resolution, but if you see the n96 next to the n85 you almost think the n85 is vga. :buddies:

Hlorri thanks for the detailed response to my question. I believe the Pre and G1 do have some of these features (MMS, copy and paste, multi-tasking, microUSB, SIM card in the G1 and eventually in the Pre when the GSM version comes out, browsable file system). I'm not sure about some of the other features you mention. And I know people love the Opera browser, but I just can't imagine how web browsing on the N86 could possible be better than on the iPhone, Pre, or G1; to me this is one thing that the large touch screen interface excels at.

That said, your list of features is very interesting and food for thought. Thanks for going to the trouble to respond in so much detail. I do like the TV out and VOIP options. And of course simply the quality of the phone as a phone is important and strangely so often overlooked in phone reviews. I know the iPhone is pretty mediocre in this department. I don't know about the Pre or G1.

I guess if you put the interface aside (which of course is not a trivial matter, I think), in some ways the Nokia N series phones still cram in more different features--in a Swiss Army Knife sort of fashion.

$499 is what Nokiausa is "selling" it for, and dealing with Amazon is a totally different experience than dealing with another seller; if the phone isn't as advertised, you can ship it back to them, free of charge.

I don't know if I can wait any longer :silly:
