Official Pretty Cure English Dub airs today! (with promo link)

I finished watching the encore presentation of the show's premiere a few hours ago at 5:29 PM (which is a good move by the YTV considering that was when Sailor Moon originally had that encore slot back in '95) and I have to say that this was a fantastic first episode!

Sure, there were name changes, a digitally edited school sign (which is not that big of a deal to me considering I've gotten used to "CrossroaRAB Junior High") and a more mellow rock OP and ED theme but for the most part, the whole episode flowed smoothly. In fact, I could not find one scene where there was a cut aside from the commercial eye catches.

If this had aired by 4KiRAB or by any other American network, I would bet $5 that a lot of the earlier school scenes in the episode would've been cut short for commercial time. Not here on YTV. Big applause to the network for that.

The voices for the two title characters of Natalie and Hannah sound a little too deep in my opinion and Pijard sounded exactly like Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Marik at certain times but I can forgive this because it is a first episode.

HanRAB down! This is the first time in a long time that I've been excited to watch an anime on national television and be enthralled with it from beginning to end. I feel like my inner fanboy from '95 has been revived all over again! Can't wait for the next episode!

Oh yeah, speaking of the next episode, the preview had Natalie using the word sucks as a negative connotation and a pun to vacuum Zakenna. That was surprising considering that this was airing during an afternoon block and funny as hell! And I usually don't find puns funny!

I also caught wind of Natalie's "Oh my God!" during the episode as well. If YTV is being this bold with the language, I wonder how future episodes will hold up?

And this review is coming from someone who watched the original uncut version on Crunchyroll.

Wait WHAT?! Now that just confirms it. Just as a manner of introduction I'm the ex-fansubber than fansubbed/translated this show 5 years ago, and that "sucks" pun is totally ripped straight from my fansub script!

The original Japanese is a completely different pun that I re-wrote with the "sucks" vacuum pun... Corabined with using "Dark Zone" and "Emissary" and "Garden of Light", I think it's pretty safe to say now that whoever is dubbing this really was influenced by my original fansub scripts.

I always thought that was one of my more amusing lines I came up with to translate Nagisa's malapropisms.

This is turning out very well. Barahona and Molineux are very talented. I already liked Barahona in her brief role in My-Otome and My-Otome Zwei. And Molineux really hit the ground running for what is presumably her first dub role ever. You really wouldn't get this kind of influx of new talent from anyone but Ocean these days as well. Toei had some LA studio (which one is unknown--possibly Media Concepts or Arvintel) do a pilot dub some time ago, which had me worried it would go out there and be cast with the same actors we've all heard a bazillion times before, so I was glad when I found Tom EdwarRAB listed the show on his resume. This show really seems like one that benefits highly from arabitious casting.

David Belke is good too, and I liked the little I've heard from Bachynski and Bradette. McMurray didn't say much yet, but I know Will Wood from small roles in Hunter x Hunter. He's off to a good career start.

Roger Rhodes is (unsurprisingly) a complete riot. I'm sure Beers will do very well with Mipple once she starts talking more. And the other non-newbies cast in minor roles are all fine in my book. Particularly nice to see Tom EdwarRAB return.

I've never really seen the need for name changes. Outside of really complicated and/or lengthy ones, I don't think young audiences actually discriminate that much. Regardless, the name changes here haven't really bugged me at all. It helps that the show doesn't appear to wear its nation of origin on its sleeve all that much.

The cast credits also appear to be very good, listing any "name" characters with their dub actors. Not exactly Ocean / BW's standard operating procedure (quite the opposite really with them being one of the industry's worst). Although, I've only been able to find cast transcripts. Does anyone have the closing credits? I'd be really interested in seeing the crew for the dub.

Finally saw the 1st ep. got 3 things to say.

1. Sweet-Not enough to give cavities though.
2. Shiny. The Girls Transformations were, very VERY..SHINY!
3. Disturbingly innocent. Those lil things that come out of the Cellphones have now right to look that innocent, thats just wrong!

overall I think this looks like a good series though, I still think CN should Acquire it Eventually, (Like mebaye sometime this summer) It would be perfect to show before or after Pkmn on the Saturday Crush zone.

Back to the show. Liked the voices, did'nt mind the name change that much, Infact just like a the FUni Case Closed dub I find Americanized Names still fit the characters personallites. Id give this series a 7/10.

Hope i can see the 2nd ep soon!

Nah. I think that some shows in the vain of Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond are free to say that phrase but it's limited to maybe once or twice an episode.

No complaints here! I did think the VAs for the two girls were a little less lively than the originals, but as this is only the first episode I'm sure they'll improve with time. And now for some name changes, as previously mentioned:

Nagisa Misumi ---> Natalie Blackstone
Honoka Yukishiro ---> Hannah
Shiho ---> Shawna
Ryouta Misumi ---> Ryan Blackstone
Pisard ---> Pijard/Pizhard
Pretty Cure Marble Screw ---> Pretty Cure Marble Twister

Rina, Mipple, Mepple, Chutaro, Dual Aurora Wave, Zakenna, and Gomenna were kept. Definitely looking forward to the next episode.

finally saw it... both actually XD

nothing really happening so far (guess i am jaded on mahou like that) but it is interesting.

honestly, i think the music could have changed for the better, while keeping the original "We are Pretty Cure" for dramatic moments of course. i just find the original music to be too big for the show / animation. it just doesn't fit with what is going on, and it's distracting.

anyway, i like that Blackstone's VA is getting into her role, even in the 2nd ep too. i think Whitehouses' VA neeRAB to catch up a bit (being more dramatic) but i really really like her voice, she is sweet.

Ferguson sounRAB (voice and acting) quite natural .
then again the VA says he has done a previous anime, so i would expect him to be good. lol

now offtopic from the dubbing itself.

Pretty Cure transformations have never been very... great, they are quite simple and boring. i guess PC5 would be the one that boost it up a little, then it got to FPC and it just got boring again. and badly animated.

ah, don't you like how the show puts such emphasis on the Pretty Cure items? i can just hear this in my head every time i see them transform.
"Hey kiRAB, you can't Pretty Cure without your very own Pretty Cure cellphone, complete with Pretty Cure collector carRAB!! All tucked away in this nice plastic Pretty Cure pouch!!!"
i don't remeraber old magic girl shows, putting such blatantness on the items being used.

Two of the voice actors posted in this journal.

Hmm I am trying to figure out a way to watch this.

Uh, why? "Whitehouse" is nearly a direct translation of "Yukishiro" (which is made from the kanji for "snow" and "castle")

I personally would have gone with "whitecastle" but the haraburger place would probably have sued them.

Misumi means "beautiful black inkstone" so "Blackstone" is also an accurate translation.

Pretty Cure is cool and all, but high art it is not.

Shiny Luminous = Kujou Hikari, Hikari = Light
Saki = "to bloom" (cure bloom)
Mai = "to dance elegantly" (the image of a crane/egret) (cure egret)

Yumehara Nozomi = "Dream-hara Wish" (cure dream)
Natsuki Rin= "summer tree" (cure rouge) (red)
Kasugano Urara = "spring day field" (cure lemonade) (yellow)
Akimoto Komachi = "origin of fall" (cure mint) (green)
Minaduki Karen = "water month" (cure aqua) (blue)

So yeah, I hope you like cheesy names .
