Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

btw, anyone that has updated to the new firmware, have you noticed your ram being used up even quicker than before? heck even on a fresh reboot i'm only at 54.3 where i used to be 60 mb. then 2 hours later i'm at 49. by the end of the day i'm hovering around 42. sucks, now i get a faster browser but i can't really multitask. 2 apps is my limit, after that then everything really lags.

I have the free Adobe PDF Reader and Quick Office Software on my N78 and N79. The Adobe PDF Reader is quite useful, but I cannot edit documents on the Quick Office software, so it's no big deal.

Clearly, Nokia mistakenly thinks that the primary market for its express music phones lies with youngsters (and not with businessmen) so it feels no need to include a free PDF Reader or Quick Office Software.

the usb cable will ALWAYS be significantly faster than bluetooth tethering, so much so that you will prob notice the difference.

anyway recently i have been having trouble watching youtube videos ever since i upgrade the flash lite app. turns out that it must be a RAM issue. even though handy taskman shows like 20MB free ram still available, the video will quit playing right in the middle. over and over this happens with the same video. i reboot the phone and the same video plays perfect. so something strange is happening with RAM. obviously we all know over days and days the RAM management gets eaten up, so a reboot clears that.

i remember with my e71 i would go 4 weeks without a single reboot:D then again that phone couldnt play youtube worth a crap, so i never bothered. but my 5800 handles it like a champ (mostly)!

that's weird, mines perfectly fine.

also noticed that the menu no longer hangs. i get that sometimes, when i want to go to the menu with the web browser open (occurs with both mini and oem browser) it would just show the options and exit buttons. now it's like instant.

also, don't know if anyone even uses this scrolling method where you just drag down. it goes way faster than before. i usually use this method to select ringtones, and it goes slow because it need to register the haptic feedback (level 1) as well. now it seems that it registers the first couple, scrolls through where ever you want to stop and then repeats the process if you want to move else where.

ok i got my phone to update. feels nicer. the home screen is alright, i guess i'm just not into using the contacts bar. i don't use that on my n97 at all.

I've been having the same youtube problem, but i don't think its because of the new flash. I think its a problem you youtube itself. Only some videos give me this problem. And also it worked fine after i first upgraded to the new flash.

Someone else made a thread about this exact issue. I was thinking of removing the new flash install. In app manager you can see a flash installer. I just don't know if its the new one or the old one.

yeah i think you should be OK using the iphone data plan. but my guess is that you will be using that iphone a lot more than the 5800! i bet i would anyway...:D

If its due to branded FW then Nokia cant be blamed. I debranded my 5800 when updating to V40,as my network, VodaCom AKA Vodafone-SA take their own time to bring the update in.

BTW, this actually happened to me on one of my Nokia chargers. Being very careful, I just put the plug in as far as it would go (which wasn't very far due to the pin obviously being bent a bit) and rotated the male charger end around a bit and finally got it to go in all the way, then left it plugged in for a while. Now, I just take special care to plug it in slowly and straight on. Haven't had a problem since either on that charger or any of my others.

Hey mo98. Here are my suggestions.

First, if everything is working fine, then leave it be. No need to install any of that other stuff.

Personally I think that Ovi Maps and Nokia Messaging are excellent, but no need for you to use them if you are happy with how you've got things working now.

One exception to this would be that you should have Ovi Maps installed before you travel. It works offline so it is good for when you don't have unlimited data.

Regarding the red key, I think I only use it for hanging up phone calls.

Interesting... It's not as snappy as the 5730 OR the N97. In fact, the 5800 is one of the relatively slower performing phones i've used and most others will also attest. Not that I dont believe you (or the source) it just sounds fishy. Lol!

The trick to enjoying the 5800, IMO, is to not use the QWERTY. I know that sounds silly, but it's how I get by. I use it on the RARE occasion that I need to type something out that's not easy in T9, but for 90% of my usage, I'm on T9, even in landscape mode.

And yes, one of the things that I said when I first got it was that Nokia should NEVER EVER put out a QWERTY without predictive text, ever ever again. They could still add it via firmware update, if they so chose.

Btw, Amazon's got it down to $301, for anyone holding out in this thread: http://is.gd/pIou
