Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

is it possible to change the wallpaper if you are using handyshell, it seems like it's only changing the background if you change the theme?

omg so sad. just did the update. it finished on NSU. did a reboot, and now its stuck on NOKIA screen for the past 20 minutes =(. tried pulling battery out twice already.

is all i can do is send it to nokia/palco?

Just a basic question about custom firmware on devices like the 5800.
I'm an embedded developer, so I understand the concepts of modding firmware or even building new distributions from scratch from the OS code. What I don't understand is what people are doing in THIS set of handset / firmware models.

I'm aware Symbian has gone open source with S^4 or whatever, but AFAIK the N8
is the first phone based on S^3 or S^4 (I don't recall which), and all the older ones line 5800 XM are based on much older OS code which you can't freely get.

So I assume that the "custom" does NOT mean that you start with open source Symbian S^4 OS code and compile a totally custom OS + apps for the handset to make it S^4 based, right? I mean even if the phone had the hardware specs. to do
that well (memory, flash, CPU speed), I assume that nobody has enough of the hardware specifications for the phone's chips / registers / driver needs / memory etc. to make it even POSSIBLE (practically) for an outsider to make a totally custom from scratch Symbian (or android or whatever) OS build for the 5800, right?

So the only other "custom" I can assume would be it is some kind of modified variant of an existing downloadable firmware package that was specifically intended originally for the 5800, and people just found ways to slightly modify it by adding/deleting apps, changing some basic settings, etc.? Is this what "custom" means for the 5800?
If so I can see the usefulness, but it seems like it is still far more limited than something that is truly "custom" as above.

What are the starting points of firmware / code / tools / documentation you'd use to make a "custom" 5800 or 53xx or 52xx firmware? What's the best place to go for information about learning how to make one or derive from an already available one?

yeah, when I use X-plore and click on device info in the tools list, it shows my serial number, total and free ram, which are all correct, and the cpu speed as 192 MHz. :befuddled Now I don't know if that is the current speed at the moment or what, but it sucks.

I have ALSO determined that if the Nokia 5800 was simply a different phone, than it would be in a different class of phones.

Features necessary for this transformation include:

1. Running the iPhone OS
2. Including a Nikon lense
3. Having a 4.0" screen
4. Costing $40
5. Not being made by Nokia

sillieidiot,
im assuming you changed your product code to get the update
would someone be willing to repost the server profile settings. ive done an update from v21 to v31 but my profile settings are gone

Mine creaks at times.... bought it used so I'm not sure where it was originally bought.... you will get used to the creaking lol .... great phone aside from that.

Ok. I can ease up my grip. The hard reset restored my missing WLan and access points. That was wierd. I've noticed that memory management, particularily ram, is the big improvement. After a fresh restart, Handy Taskman shows that I have 56MB RAM free, up from 50MB with the previous firmware. Opening the browser and visiting HoFo, the RAM hasn't dropped below 44MB. On the previous firmware, it would drop from anywhere between 14 to 35 MB. I'm going to be testing this further for the next few days. That and only that(ram) was the only major gripe I have with Nokia and s60. Anything else to me is just whatever. But thanx all for the reset idea. I've done it once before, coincedently after my last firmware update, but I keep forgetting that we have that option.

yea i know it's a bug, just hoping more people will report it to get opera to fix it lol

yea it's weird, the back button would light up (white) then crashes.

sometimes it crashes when you leave your finger on the page for a couple of seconds and the dialog box pops up for you to go mobile view, reload, or whatever the last option is. and you take your finger off and accidentally hit it somewhere else on the page rather than the dialog box options or the options at the bottom. i hate that **** lol

Does anyone know if setting the autochange wallpaper ( slide show ) to 1min would significantly shorten my batter life as compared to 10mins/30mins/1hr auto change?

There are some apps that HAVE to run from the phone, but they usually tell you when you download them. I change the name of the SIS file to reflect this so I can keep it straight when/if I reload everything, like I just did after the FW upgrade.

My favorite apps were Profimail and Handy Calendar but I also enjoyed IM+ and Slick. The latest FW for the NAM was great as I recall, being at v31.

No, it's not. Not for FOTA anyway.

Why don't I see FOTA updates? I tried all 3 NAM codes and the 0574994 NA code. Nothing. I'm currently on OFW V 50.2.005 and when I try it says it's Connecting, then Checking for updates, then Receiving data from Nokia, then No updates available. Pretty much the same story with EVERY update (always have to use NSU).
