Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

Yea, firmware 40.2.005 is available for the RM-428 NAM 5800 Navi edition now (product code 0591814), but not yet for the RM-428 NAM XpressMusic (product code 0577454).

If you want it for your XpressMusic now, just use NSS or JAF to change your product code to the Navi version and then use NSU to update. You could try FOTA, but when I checked a few days ago there were no FOTA updates for either of the NAM product codes (or the alternate NAM codes).

PC Suite still works for me, but Ovi Suite has been graduated (it was a beta product originally), so you may want to give that a try if PC Suite doesn't seem to be working for you. Note that there was an update to NSU very recently, so you will probably need to get the latest version of that as well.

Yep. .. .I'm thinking the 5800 WILL get kinetic. It is just a software thing. so it shouldn't be a problem. It takes more processing power so that would be the only constraint.

(SIGH)

I thought the hard reset fixed the alarm bug thats on the V31.0.8, it was working perfectly for a week ( using a repeat on workday setting ) it was very accurate and just yesterday it fired of late 1-2mins late.

this is really annoying for a such a small issue to be overlooked by nokia.

I would have agreed with you if I did not have one, but I don't listen to music at high volumes at my age and that speaker sounded blown. The issues with the Euro version were not showing up right out of the box, but mine did! there are other early adopters that have complained about the sound.

I hope all you guys that pre-ordered don't have the issues with your units. Knock on wood for those who haven't received them yet.

Using an s40 phone now is a pain. I really miss my 5800 NAM.

Ok.. I've actually tried looking, but haven't found anything that could help. I may be dense, but now it's just pissing me off. I bought a 16gb card, 5800 recognizes it fine. I've copied over like 8 movies to the drive, put them in the Videos folder of the memory card and get picked up fine by the player. Now for music files, I've moved them to each of the following locations:
e:\Sounds
e:\Sounds\Digital
e:\Sounds\Simple
e:\Music (folder I created)
e:\Downloads
The music player refuses to recognize any of my .mp3s in those locations. They get picked up if I want to choose them for ringtones/message tones, etc but not the music player. Within the music player app I try to do a search and still nothing. Any ideas?

yes you can. go to settings --> connectivity --> destinations --> internet --> select the AP --> WLAN security settings --> WEP key settings --> WEP key (and just change that.)

do you guys know there's a software call mykeylock, you can lock/unlock your 5800 completely without using the side unlock/lock key, you can have multi-ways to unlock your phone now, i've been using it for couple wks now and it's pretty cool, you can go to opda.net to search for it..........

Does anyone else have 2 ovi store icons in their apps folder? I'm not sure what to erase to get rid of one.
oh and i am still waiting for someone to help me find the free read only version of quickoffice.

@ tphone
I think SIP VoIP Release 3.x Settings Application is only for N97. If you have no Net Settings after install then it did not install. I beleive this happened for N97 users who did not upgrade their firmware to 2.0. May want to try installing with the latest firmware for the 5800 (one with kinetic scrolling and new home screen) and see if it adds Net Settings....

I am thinking Nokia will not fill those pre-orders now. Most likely they fix the issue before they ship them out. Obviously they will have to recall the flagship store stock & can't sell until the issue is fixed.

Hmm. I'm pretty pleased with the way ProfiMail works on the 5800. My only complaint is when you first install the program, the first time you run it one of the buttons is hidden on the welcome to profimail screen. Once you find the hidden button and continue, it seems to be in pretty good shape.

actually no not really, but its not comparable to nseries, i like watching videos on it and love the screen but i despise the ui, to me its really that bad.
I use it to watch movies but when i need to go out or need to do anything productive the sim goes back in the n85.
This is only my opinion but i have been a long time s60 user so experience plays a part also.

i said i would like to hear others opinions on how they would have designed the 5800's on screen full keyboard, because honestly i cant see how else nokia could have designed it with more room without sacrificing keyboard space. so i asked "how would you design it" and the response was a sarcastic "just look at any smartphone". so my response to that is TELL ME which smartphone to look at. i'm not going to research an infinite list of ALL the smartphones that have ever been created. i want an example of a full screen, no hardware keys, phone with an on screen keyboard that provides better space in the text window than the 5800. i'm not being smart a$$, i was genuinely asking to show me. i'm curious.

i think the 5800 speakers are much better and use it for the shower as well lol it's mainly the bass that's causing the distortion, just change your equalizer settings like i did to minimize it a little and raise the trebel up. i virtually don't have any distortion at all, and still have some bass. just not as deep as the default.

also, format your card. when mine came, the card was causing a lot of my phone's problems because of the way it was formatted.

I've determined that if the 5800 had the following few things it would be in another CLASS of phone:

1) predictive / word correction using full screen qwerty
2) xenon flash
3) capacitive screen
4) much faster processor
5) a BIG firmware update fixing bugs.

As it stands now, though, its better than MY own personal runner-up choices, the N97 and the E75. I won't pay $500+ for an N97 has funny keyboard feel and key placement and no xenon. The E75 has a small screen and buggy FW. The only thing left to look at is the iPhone 3G/3GS.... Fast processor, amazing screen, best browser in class, full screen keyboard with predictive / correction, a2dp, html email, best in class sound quality and US support (that actually care about their customers here) and great build quality. Potential, it would seem.

Anyone else agree?
