Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

This is old news. Nokia forgot to include the update server profile in the 5800 NAM firmware.

Apparently they used to have a support page that would send you the profile, but that page has since been edited and the link no longer works.

I went back and forth with Nokia support for a while on this subject, and after some really lame replies from "support" agents who were entirely clueless, I got a reply that said the only option for 5800 NAM was the PC NSU software.

When I pointed out that not everyone runs Windows (I run Linux) Nokia support suggested that I find a friend or relative who runs Windows and use their computer to update my phone. :(

So even though the profile exists, and they used to send the profile out, it appears there is no way to get them to do that now.

Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

Received mine from Buy.com yesterday morning and have spent the better part of my waking hours with it since then. I don?t want to be a killjoy, and I?m mindful of the admonition that one should use the phone for at least a week before judging it. However, after 8 months with the E71, I already know that the 5800 is not for me.

There are simply too many steps involved in basic operations such as navigation and entering text. Scrolling in the browser is far more difficult than with a d-pad. In long lists, scrolling is imprecise even with the handy-dandy plectrum. Consistent one-handed operability, important for me, is out of the question. See sr1329?s excellent posts for specific criticisms, which I second.

Don?t get me wrong ? the 5800 is addictive in many ways. The big high-resolution screen is beautiful, and the overall quality of the hardware and software is quite satisfactory. This is a perfectly good Nokia product. It?s just not the best choice for the no-nonsense user who wants to get things done as efficiently as possible.

There?s a geek girl in my family who will be getting this phone next month. It?ll be my present on her tenth birthday, and I can?t wait to show her how to use it. She?s going to love it.

Is there an app that logs phone calls that keeps a record of the duration of the call. The phone will tell you the duration when you hang up, but sometimes I need to be able to go back and see how long the call lasted. My old Moto razr did that.

I've never even heard of this.

For me, as far as using the 5800 as a phone, its been one of the best i've ever had. No problems at all. I'm on the phone for 2 or 3 hours at a time sometimes, and i get no funny business, dropped calls, nothing. excellent always.

I think you should try hard resetting. If that doesnt work, either a) throw the phone out a window, and move on, or b) get a replacement.

It doesn't list the 5800XM as one of its compatible devices so I don't think it's going to work without hard keys.

I tried Emoze and I can't get it to work using OWA so I uninstalled it. However it work via PC Connector, which is useless since I have to leave my workstation on all the time.

Has anyone used the Nokia browser-based app called Here and Now 2.0? It installed successfully, but always seems to have connection problem with the server.

yea he meant hackable by cfw. i don't think there are any cfw for v50 nam posted by users. most (if not all) are for the rm-356. you just have to make your own, or keep waiting

whoops! Yeah Love Lockdown lol

Just tried a bunch of other songs on highest volume... most of the songs sound fine, but yeah there are the ones with too much bass that causes distortion. I'm scared for my speakers too... sucks, I really shouldn't have to worry about such a thing that's supposed to be able to play music well. ah well, if the speakers blow out hopefully i can claim it for warranty or something.

I didn't know that about the themes. I was installing them to the memory card as I didn't want to use up all the precious little available memory the phone had left. Here's another kicker, while I was looking around at different apps, I clicked on the DOWNLOAD one, it shifted the screen a little like it was going to open, then it went back to the menu. Tried it several times, nothing. I then went to the music player, and then I got the dreaded message. "Corrupted Database. Blah blah blah". So there goes that. I've now formatted the card, and see what happens next. Really sucks as I'd taken a few photos at the in-laws birthday party, now they're gone.

Honestly, when it first came out, I had the Euro version, and I hated it. Since then, there's been new firmware, and new applications, and now it's a viable option when I decide which phone to use for a given day. The good thing on that is that both of those are only going to increase. We already know there's a v21 firmware coming, and with the N97 flagship landing in a few months, all the apps for that phone will work on the 5800, as well (including widgets, though the 5800 won't get the homescreen integration).

That means the phone is only going to get better, not worse.

I think you guys are arguing over semantics, which is pointless, especially since this thread has nothing to do with Apple or its products. So if you want to continue this, please take it elsewhere. I'm getting tired of all the Apple nonsense polluting the Nokia forums.

Just got the 5800 NAM today!

First impressions - solid build quality - no squeaky battery cover, the phone is actually quite lightweight (and plastic) but feels good and solid. Camera is blah, but everything else, I'm realy excited with so far. Had nokia put a better camera on this, it would be a seriously cool device. Also noticed, the usual ppt, word, pdf support is not present on the phone :(

I've barely played with it so far but really like it. Its going to take alot to kill my n95 tho (as I heart the n95-4). Sidenote - my coworkers are going to think I'm a nutcase... I've had the n95, n85, and now the 5800 in a month lol.
