No sir that is actually the number of satellites your phone is finding. And you notice you will only need 3 to get a fix like you said. But its definitely not the strength, its the number of found satellites.

You can verify this by opening your location app and going to gps data and the display of satellites in the north, west, south, east view shows the number of solid blue connections. It matches exactly.

In fact how could they give you signal strength? Which satellite would they give you? Its not like there's only one connection, it would have to pick which makes no sense. Its definitely number of connected satellites.

here's some screenshots:

I did the upgrade today through Nokia Software Updater. It showed that 40 was available and it downloaded and installed then said it was complete. The phone rebooted and came up to the Nokia screen and then I saw a bunch of thin lines on the screen different colors. The phone wont come up to the start screen. It just eventually shuts off.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Well once I saw how this thing charges I hated it immediately, its a very thin pin recessed into the charging jack.

Have you checked if the pin is bent? That is a likely cause. If you twist the charger out of there you could easily bend it and make it much harder to use.

My mistake was I ordered it a day before the N97 was officially released..

I should have held back.. Oh well the N97 is not out in the US anyways.. So that gives me time to return it and get my refund back.. :2thumbs:

My wife's 5800 NAV always asks to select the connection when my N97 doesn't? Is there a preference I found in the N97 that is doing that automagically or is that just another of the incremental improvements?

Been a problem since day one.

Like the poster above I try to avoid mass storage mode for that reason. I either use PC suite, or if I'm going to move a lot of data I just turn the phone off and put the card into the card reader on my computer (it reads/writes much faster than the phone). However, when I'm on one of my Linux computers I still use MS mode on occasion. Wish they would fix that bug.

It used to do that when you ran a backup to the memory cards as well, but it seems they fixed that bug. :)

I have never had an issue with rebooting using mass storage mode. Been through every official firmware. Haven't tried any of the custom ones yet. Currently on v51 with PC 0574994.

If your Green call button is not working, it may not be possible to do a hard reset (since that is one of the required buttons), but here are the instructions for hard resetting a 5800 anyway. Good luck!

Turn the phone off (take the battery out for a moment and then put it back in if the power switch doesn't work). Now when you go to turn it back on you will need to hold a special combination of buttons. Don't just hit the power button!

To hard reset the phone from the off state, hold the following combination of buttons:

Call (green) + End (red) + Camera + Power.

Press them all and continue to hold them until you see the Nokia logo on the screen. Note that THERE IS NO CONFIRMATION FOR THIS! Do this and your data is gone, period!

yea that's the one i'm using now. since all the other versions off opera mini didn't allow me to set the allowance properties. but oh well. now that the OEM browser is so fast, i don't even use opera mini anymore. i only use opera when i'm on edge.

You mean to say "it doesn't work with any 3rd party software that reinvents the wheel."

Obviously, if a program doesn't use the native controls, updates to the native controls won't change how the program works. Complain to the software vendor.

Anyone having a problem with their display like mine? There's a row of pixels along the top that seem to be darker than they should be... it's really noticeable when viewing a brighter image/picture. Here's some pics of what they look like.

IMG_5490.jpg

The blackish line that goes across the top going through the top of the "AT&T"

Also when viewing a picture/video such as this:

You can see it on the bottom left part since that's a lighter area of the picture.

I get this line everywhere, as if it's a screen defect. I know for certain it's not always been like this because I examined the screen meticulously when I first got the phone a while back for dead pixels.

hey guys, I just got 5800 from newegg today. I had originally intended to flash it to firmware v30.2 with the HK language pack. But now that v31 is out, should I just get that instead? is it still possible to add in the language pack to this firmware version?

thanks.

that is just a coincidence. do it a few times and you'll see. instead of calculating the signal strength of one, it probably just takes the average of all different signal strengths from the satellite.

I just did it right now and it shows 4 on gmaps, but on the gps data it shows 6 sats being active. plus i don't think the gps data is accurate as i can just open that app without gmaps and it will show pick up 6-8 sats.

anyhow, i could be wrong. but now you've helped him by showing what we're talking about lol

edit:
uploaded the screen shots from my phone

So, I bought a 5800 Nav last week after sending in / returning my N97. I have had a N95-3, -4 and an E71 prior to this.

I have given this phone its price worth and I am impressed especially after using the N97 for one week. I have loaded the phone with the same number of apps (about 20) that I did on my N97 but no issues so far, on the other hand I had to hard reset mu N97 3 times in 1 week.

My question is the phone memory on my phone is showing @ 48MB, I have installed all the apps on the memory card but even then the phone memory is starting to show low. I have not gotten any errors so far but after using the N97 for one week I would like to keep phone mem as free as possible.

Any ideas, I have already cleared all my messages and cache but its still showing 48MB. thoughts?
