Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

Yes, that it what I tried first. I only tried downloading when the SMS method didn't work.

To review, I did the following:
- Browse to the NM site at http://email.nokia.com/
- Enter my phone #, and select my phone: 5800 XpressMusic.
- My phone then receives an SMS from Nokia that contains a link.
- I click on the link to begin the download process.
- When the download is complete and the installation is started I get a message telling me that this software is not compatible with my phone.
- If I tell it to proceed anyway then I find that it was right: I have the wrong version for my phone.

The NM website offers a backup option in case the method above doesn't work. That also doesn't work, as described before.

So, why is it working for you and not me? We are all using the same 5800 NAM phone. Perhaps it is because my phone is the Rogers' version with their custom firmware?

I gotta go find those ota settings that were posted for the nam edition so i can do this update. I've been having lots of problems with this phone lately so maybe new firmware will fix it. Or hard reset.

This week a new video appeared with the 5800 firmware v31 showing in pc suite. So a new firmware for this phone is eminent any day now. The question is will they also give us north americans the update as well? Its almost a sure thing that the euro will be out any day now. But the nam version could be SOL.

And we don't know that it will have kinetic scrolling. Where did you read that? We can only hope.

Actually, I'll bet it's the other way around. The 2.8 is the focal length and 3.7 is the focal ratio (f-stop). Which would mean the lens on that phone in the picture is a downgrade since it would require even more light.

For those who don't know about phtography, the lower the focal ratio (lower number), the less light needed (lenses with low focal ratios collect more light). The trade off is less depth of field (a narrower plane of sharp focus), so the focus becomes more critical.

And BTW, if they increased the focal length the sensor would have to get larger to maintain the field of view.

Hi
I just switched from a N82 to the 5800 XM. In the 1 day I've had the new 5800 XM it's been a total joy.

I have 1 questions I hope some of the board members can help me with. Is there a way to decrease the size of the icons in the shortcuts bar on the home screen? I don't like how much real estate the icons take up, often drowning out the picture I use for the home screen.

Thanks in advance.

since you dont have cellular data, the GPS lock is going to take a while. you should just enable aGPS for a few times, it will only cost you 4 or 5kb of data, and you can see how fast the lock will be; about 10 seconds for 7 satellites. then you can turn it back off if you want.

I was just hoping to get the price that I paid for my NE back + shipping if it weren't local. All the original bits of the XM, most of which are brand new since I had chargers, earbuds, etc from my past phones are in there. I was also gonna throw in a car charger and a suction thingy for the car too that fits the 5800 perfectly if the person wanted it. I'd also put Garmin on it but I'm sure you already know how to do that lol. Just let me know Hieu

Give Nokia Customer Service a call. They took care of me pretty well. Free shipping to and from the Alabama place since our phones are still under warranty too. I'm under warranty until April 25, 2010 :clapping:

I have read that also and i was quite suprised, the loudest is the n96 in my opinion followed by the n95-4 then n95-3 and like i said n85 and 5800 very close. :buddies:

Mine works fine although every now and then it will offer up "AT&T Internet" at home rather than my home network. I just click cancel then try and connect again and it will offer up "NickyNet" as it should. :)

I call it the "Nokia Tumble" and almost EVERY S60 phone I've ever had does it to some extent. The 5800 has been really good about it although, keep in mind that if you're using 3G all day, that will happen. I think its partly Nokia's bad batter meters and partially the honest-to-god voltage drop in the batteries.

I have this error, too, and apparently other do, as well. THIS ONE NEEDS TO GET FIXED ASAP. Nothing worse than having to remove the battery cover ....especially the one on the 5800!!

Hmm. I've been looking for a pic of the T9 layout. I assume it's obviously just like the dialing pad...?

Thinking hard about picking one up. Of all the features I use, google maps is probably the one I use the most. Given it's screen size it seems like a nice choice. I've had my fill of the N85.

that sucks, hopefully they'll take care of you.

this phone seems to be the best phone i have so far (after the n95). it has more support than the n97 does lol i keep coming back to this phone with new stuff to try out. currently running a cfw, makes the browser so much faster that i don't even use opera mini anymore.

I couldn't help but notice that someone started a N97 bugs, issues thread. We never started one. Does this matter ? Does Nokia even read thru HoFo ? Reading thru all these posts, I guess a firmware update is possible, but it would be nice if the developers knew the bugs. My biggest issue is that a2dp music stops streaming when i receive a text msg. Ugh. I wish that didnt happen......Tom

WTF - now my phone is doing the no sms thing again. I don't receive sms unless i go offline then online or send a sms out. It was doing this before the hard reset so i don't know wtf is going on here. Last time this happened (2 weeks ago) i had to get a new SIM from ATT. Then i get 11 sms a a time. I need to rinse and repeat until i don't get any more. This makes setting up Nokia Messaging very difficult!

Actually, even if he does not have any sms/mms plan he still should be able to send mms using any comparable phone. He'll be charged 25c per each sms sent and 75c per mms.So it makes sense to get a sms/mms bundle.I for instance have 400sms/mms for 4.99

I totally agree, the main thing I am (i mean WAS... until my phone bricked with the V40 update) looking forward to in V40 was the automatic rotation of the virtual keyboard when the phone is rotated to landscape mode, that is what bugged me the most about the 5800. Kinetic scrolling is just a bonus novelty, I was doing a-ok with the scroll bars on the side.

Well that confirms what i just posted above. Energy profiler was reading much different than beeper reading. So i don't know which one is correct. I'm inclined to go with beeper because it matches the signal bar reducing around 100dbm. But with energy profiler the bars would drop with a reading well less then 100dbm which is not correct with common knowledge of where the network signal drops off to drop calls. Very weird.
