Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

Man, what a disappointment. Almost every single program i use on S60 doesnt work, or doesnt work properly.

No internet radio. Google maps constantly asks for an access point (all i can do is set my 3G connection as the default for everything. Nimbuzz doesnt work. Garmin doesnt work (maybe wiht virtual keyboard). and a good hadnful of others.

I love the phone other wise for the most part. I wish the browser was bit more responsive to swipes etc.

There's a known creak issue with this phone but it occurs on the top right next to the quick launch button. There is a youtube video showing how to fix it. Its just a chassis clip that is half a mm out of tolerance which you can fill that gap and the creak is gone. I don't have the issue though and the opposite side is very solid.

V31.2.101 should already have the FOTA server profile. I hard reset a NAM 5800 Nav Edition running v31.2.101 (and formatted the memory card too) and it can still check for FOTA updates. Of course it says there aren't any so I guess the update isn't out for either the XM or Nav default NAM product codes.

Honestly, I have wifi around me at home and college. I don't send alot of MMS and the few times I would need data is maybe for aGPS, but its not a problem. I don't really browse the web on the go. You may be asking why the hell I bought the device then, but for now a data plan isn't really necessary although that may change in the future.

Just got my 5800 today from Dell.. I'm not opening it.. I will return it back to Dell to get a full refund and take the route that leads me to the N97..

For the firmware update, is there a change log out there? Ive seen on symbian guru that this changes the homescreen to the 5530 one, kinetic scrolling and auto changes the keyboard from qwerty in landscape to numeric in portrait. Is this it? Any more tweaks out there ? ..Its going to be a long wait for the NAM users...Cant wait though :2thumbs:

Yeah you got me all hyped up when you originally said Nav was free  . It starts to navigate then 10 sec later, it checks something and says "not available for your country or region" . It doesn't really matter to me anyhow. I've been using a cracked version of 3.01 for about 4 months so I get free navigation anyways. There are some issues with it but it works fine.

So much for waiting for this phone :-(. I already packed it to return it back to Buy.com. I tried hard to like it in spite of how much I hate Nokia S60 call logs.

Things I hated in playing with the phone for about 3-hours.

1. Feels cheap
2. Makes creaking sounds all over the body randomly (Not always).
3. Screen is a nice 3"+ but lacks the vibrance.
4. Home screen is so ridiculous. Why only 4 shortcuts when there are no shortcut keys? Also, when four contacts are added why doesn't it let us have option to see all their numbers and not just the default number?
5. When you start to dial with the keypad, usually most phones will bring up contacts as the numbers we entered match. This one doesn't show any. Example, when I start entering 703-858, it should bring up list of all contacts whose numbers start with that number and it doesn't do that. I am not sure if all Nokia's are like this. But these are little things I am used to with SE phones.
6. With $350+ there some excellent touch screen phones from AT&T that look and feel better than this phone. Way better.

Thank god I didn't buy the phone on ebay as I was so tempted with the live.com cashback deal.

I think I won't consider any Nokia's until they first fix the call logs issue. I probably will look for the next HTCs or the Samsungs or just give in to iPhone come June :-(.

Is there any predictable time frame between firmware becoming available via NSU and FOTA?

The RM-428 NAM Navi v40 has been on NSU for almost 2 weeks, but still no FOTA? Just wondering how much longer the wait will be...

Don't get too excited about upgrading to v40. I updated my Nav Ed. and I'm really regretting it. I have already had two bad crashes. The first time, Ovi Maps crashed once and the phone rebooted by itself. The second time, I was using the Nokia browser and everything froze, even holding down the power button didn't do anything! I had to take out the battery. I haven't had a crash that bad since I had a POS WinMo phone. My 5800 never crashed before the update.

Kinetic scrolling is a nice concept, but I could only see it working with my contact list. There was no kinetic scrolling for Nokia Messaging or web browser. It doesn't work with any 3rd party software either, like Opera Mini.

I didn't hard reset before OR after my v21 to v31 update...FWIW. In fact, even if there are new "features" I could reap, I've told myself I won't hard reset until the Kinetic Scrolling update comes at which point I'll probably start clean with a hard reset after the update. I noticed nice speed updates even without the hard reset as I said before.

I'd still update, bro. Do it... you know you want to. hehe
