Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

HoFo team...Did anybody DL the trial version of RAMblow S60 and put on their 5800? I don't really see any lag but was wondering if I load this up..will it really make the phone blazing fast ?? I power cycle every 3 days and it seems to stay snappy...just looking for super snappy...Tom :2thumbs:

-Don't delete your MMS point; you won't be able to send picture messages (which are billed the same way as an SMS) as far as I know.

-It isn't necessary to put the phone in GSM only; you would theoretically still be able to use edge if you wanted to.

You can go into the connection settings and create a new "destination" - - this would allow you to only have wifi as an internet option for the phone. Just delete the AT&T Media Net option and put wifi in the destination.

I would personally get a data plan as it enhances the user experience on the go, but I can totally understand not wanting to spend an extra $15 a month

haven't had the rebooting problem. i never put it in mass storage anyways. i can access mass storage anytime while in pc suite mode through the windows explorer.

yea when i take away the widgets i have as much as you do. the facebook widget takes up a whole lot, but i'm used to that from my days with the n97.

usually the themes that i use will make widgets more or less transparent (just depends on the creator).

as far as wallpaper goes, are you talking about when it's in portrait? it looks perfect in landscape but when you make it portrait it's zoomed in right?

Yes, you are not alone. I get more dropped calls on this phone then i ever have gotten in my life! I live in an area with really good 3g and edge coverage too. Its super annoying and embarrasing. When the call drops suddenly i have to call the person back and they ask what phone i am using and i sadly tell them its the 5800. Then they say isnt that the phone you waited for a year to come out... Its just not a real good phone.

Are you referring to the language file swap method? If so, did you try it with this file: RM-356_40.0.005_prd.rofs2.V23?

I'm currently running 31.2.101 on my Nav. Ed. with the RM-356_31.0.101_prd.rofs2.V23 language file. My web browser never seemed to work with the file swap. I was looking forward to the new firmware but if I can't get Chinese on it, then I would have to reconsider.

We surely can still bi*ch even we're liking the phone (I'm one of them and put away my N95 even it has a worse camera compared my previous N95, and isn't better than my older 3.2MP N93i). We can't ignore issues and not say it, or Nokia would re-release the same phone again and again in next 3 years like the N95 "clones" which they still haven't improved the camera and video recording in the N97.

does anyone know if you can display more than just today and the next day calendar entries on the homescreen?

the homescreen is rather non functional for a s60 device. 4 shortcuts and a Search? Wow really, thanks. is handy shell worth the price? I never bought it for any of my s60 devices, so i was curios to see who uses it for there 5800. pros/cons if you don't mind sharing some input, thanks :buddies:

Im in Kansas City and I have full 3.5g signal everywhere I have been, but I have had to reset my 5800 three times already during normal operation (phonecall, browsing) ....

My red key doesn't ever take me back to the main screen. In most apps it does nothing. Here are the exceptions I have found:

* Contacts - It gives me a weird menu, I think because it is on a typing field
* In the Search app, it is the same

I haven't found a single app that closes for me with the red button. I think I'm do for a full reset.

Not weird at all. I also despise T9 and couldn't wait to dump my N95 because of it. When T9 was the only game in town, we had no choice. Now that virtual qwerty and physical qwerty keyboards are becoming more and more common on phones, I don't see much of a future for T9. It is cumbersome, unnatural and just an overall PITA. Just because you've become good at using it from experience does not make it a proper modern typing solution.

After the N95, I got the iphone and felt like I got parolled... instantly loved the qwerty (both portrait and landscape). I love the 5800 landscape keyboard as well.

This T9 love reminds me of the early 90s when diehard DOS users were bashing Windows (I was one of them :)). We all know how that turned out.

Speaking of mass storage mode, whenever I connect to the computer with mass storage mode, it seems my Messaging preferences changes my default storage location from E: (micro SD slot) to C: (internal memory). I have to go and manually change it back to E: afterwards to get my texts to be stored on the SD card. Anyone else notice this? Also, is there a way to prevent this from happening besides stop using mass storage mode? I'm using the latest v51 fw.

i was talking to a friend and this crazy hotdog drives along side me doing 70mph on the freeway. "man you should see what i'm staring at". ok i'll send over a pic.

all i had to do was snap the pic and press the message button, and it did the rest. very very strange nokia would add THAT type of detail, but ignore stuff like the following:

call log bug
threaded text
kinetic scrolling
etc etc

i mean seriously nokia, for real? you add THAT type of detail, but cant even address the items above? WTF   :crying:

Look at the back cover on this 5800...

Wonder if there's a refresh in the pipeline!

i loaded the full page over wifi (took 2 tries, i noticed it the first time that it didn't fully load). i'm sure it would have taken a little longer with 3g though. but scrolling seemed fine to me. you could see the scroll bar on the side showing where i'm at as i was going down. but i could definitely see why it would be better to use the scroll bar in the case

yea i used to have that problem with scrolling all the way up. but since opera implemented tabs, i just open the threads in tabs while leaving the subforum one open to look at other threads.

I agree 1000%. I type sooooo slow on those type of keyboards. and they always but so much extra bulk on the phone. Thats why i went with the 5800. Its dirt cheap and i think its an excellent device.

the only thing i wish is that the 5800 OS had the same home screen the N97 has.
