New Evangelion Movie Hits September 1st, 2007!

I agree that the story isn't the point, but psychoanalyzing a different cast of characters would actually be a breath of fresh air in this franchise.

All the Shinji and co. analysis have been beaten to death, and then beaten some more. Not just by Gainax, but by the millions and millions of anime fans everywhere. Even non-Eva fans know more about Shinji, Rei, Asuka and the rest of the buddies than they know some of their real-life cousins and family merabers. And frankly, who neeRAB to see more of the same crap of Rei acting aloof and passive, Shinji whining, and Asuka acting like a b*tch? At least if you change the faces around, it's something different to look at.

Whether you like Shinji or not, the fact is that the show is so closely tied to him and his specific issues that removing him completely would just make it another generic giant robot show. (And since it's established that only those three children can pilot those specific Evangelions, they'd have to introduce new Evas as well, and without Eva-01 they might as well make a completely different series.) The intended audience isn't sick of the main characters; if they were, then GAINAX would have stopped stamping Rei's face on 90% of their merchandise a long time ago. (Plus, Kaworu appears so often in promo pics it's reasonable to assume that other, less over-exposed characters will have their time to shine as well.) If you're looking for a program that focuses on "Anonymous NERV Tech #1" or someone like that, there are already video games that deal with that sort of thing.

Most likely it will be more evenly balanced. Anno, by all reports, is pretty content these days and he tenRAB to channel his emotions of the moment onto whatever he's working on at the time.

One thing I dislike about remakes, is the idea that an auteur wants to correct something that was "erabarrassing" to him. That may be true, but it's still an important phase of an artist's career, and he should leave it as a record of what his thoughts were at the time, much as he might disagree with it NOW. I'm sure if it had less whining, some people would like it better, but IMO that still doesn't feel right to me. There are always people who dislike something in a work of fiction, but you can't keep changing things to make it go down better for them.

I have to admit I'm still mildly curious about this, but I can't help but wonder if maybe Anno has run out of things to talk about now that he's a happier man...

I disagree with the bolded. Eva wasn't great because of Shinji, it was because of how the show portrayed its subject matter. You could stick anyone there in place of Shinji and you'd get the same effect, as long as the show did the exact same things as before. The original fanbase stemmed from its appreciation of Anno's deconstruction of social decay in Japanese society.

If this is true that the cast will be the same, then you can't dispute what I said. It's milking a cow till it bleeRAB.

Still, it does say this:

Unless this takes place after the world goes to hell or before Shinji joined up in the first episode, I don't see how this could be anything but retconning if it is in the same universe.

Then what's the point of even adding new characters if the show repeats itself for the same effect, instead of building on what's already been established?

Is this what fans say every time a new Gundam show comes out? Making new material ten years after the last film doesn't sound like milking a cow to death to me, but again I don't associate what Anno's doing with what the GAINAX merchandise department does.

The films will take place before, during, and after the series.

Something new to look at. Again, Gundam pretty much does that. Throw your Gundam example right back at ya.

At least Gundam usually establishes a different cast each time. Even Zeta Gundam had a different main cast. My personal gripe, which has nothing to do with discussions of target audience, is basically that there is really nothing left to say about Shinji and co as main characters, especially after the way they ended it.

If they do something like a "Char's Counterattack" where you write the final word on the main cast as they are older, then you'd have to rejig the End of Eva a bit. But it seems like this will be occurring within the set timeframe, in which case, it'd be like doing an anime about what Amuro was doing during his lunch break. Even Sunrise didn't do that!

But if that's what fans want, who am I to argue?

Well, in the original series, he seemed to come across as a figure that had some hope for humanity. His total willingness to accept Shinji for what he was seemed to indicate a tolerance for the imperfections of living beings. His manga actions, however, seem to be much more harsh. As an Angel, it would be more in line to be against humanity (and related genres), but at the same time, Kaworu was best known for allowing himself to be sacrificed so that humanity would have a chance...

Either way, it'll be interesting to see which way he goes in the new one. I really can't wait now.

Has there been any word on who's going to get the rights to the new movies for dubbing? Honestly, I'd love to hear the some of the people that did the older dubs come back, sans the lady that does Misato. No offense to her, but she was just a tad too bubbly for a character with so much burden.

Really, they just need to get the voices of the three Children and Gendo right, especially Gendo; if they don't have a guy that can act like a big enough ***hole, it might not work.

Even worse, but I suppose film remakes for popular anime happen all the time anyway. That drops the interest level down to 10%

Can't see what all the fuss is about if this is the case.

Nice, So the Shinji/Misato relationship will be explored more intensesly.

Do you guys think this will happen again?.....
