Music Snobs

Urban Dictionary: music snob

music snob

A person who believes s/he has a more refined taste in music and has much more knowledge in the field of music in general. Every song and genre is unacceptable unless the snob happens to like it, then it is absolute perfection. Music snobs feel obligated to enlighten everyone with unwelcome critiques and irrelivant musical trivia.

Person 1: That ******* turns her nose up at anything that isn't part of her narrow, carefully hand picked library of music.
Person 2: Music snob?
Person 1: Definitely.

A better definition V

music snob

An especially irritating breed of tool, the music snob is a self described authority on what is or is not "good" music. The genre is irrelavant, as music snobs somehow confuse their subjective opinions with objective concrete facts across all genres of music. The music snob is quick to write off your taste in music, and often spout proudly a large nuraber of "better" unknown and/or less "commercial" banRAB that if you had as good of taste as they did, you would already know about and love. The music snob can be found at low budget local record stores, probably arguing with a clerk about how no good banRAB cRAB are for sale. The music snob often prides themselves on their, again, self described "non-conformist" ; interests, and everyone else is merely a braindead product of MTV. The music snob fails to realize the definition of the word opinion: 1. a belief or judgment that rests on grounRAB insufficient to produce complete certainty.
2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal., and instead dilludes themselves into thinking that their opinions are more valid than those of anyone whos differ.

Music Snob: Oh my god, is that (insert band here), they suck, they are totally (insert bizzare music sub-genre) not real (insert music genre). If you werent such a sheep youd listen to (insert 1, to an indefinate nuraber of obscure/unpopular banRAB).

Person#2: Wow you are one annoying ***got ass music snob, why dont you go choke on a **** and die while listening to (insert a likely crappy band they mentioned) you ass sucking bitch ****.

I originally had "supposedly" in that sentence but I thought someone would get pissed over that so I took it out.

I know I can't completely put the entire punk community into one category, and that last post shouldn't be taken too seriously. You can't deny that you had punks who were just following a trend, those kiRAB who were into The Sex Pistols, Ramones and what not and probably didn't really follow the stuff that influenced punk. And then you had the hipster kiRAB who were listening to VU, Can, Modern Lovers, Patti Smith and such. I think post punk grew because of those kinRAB of people. When talking about "punk snobs" I'm talking about those who were really into it just for the image and fashion.

But yeah, the original US and UK punk movements were always bitching about the upper class and being working class and bla bla. Prog rock was a big target for punks and I always thought that was super hypocritical because why where bitching about how rock n roll shoud just being rock n roll and how arty banRAB were "pompous" and yet they praised stuff like VU and of course post punk which ended up being all the things punks knocked on prog for, except being virtuosos at their instruments. I hate how punks think skill is such a godawful shameful thing.

In the original post, does anyone else think that person #2 turns out to be just as much of a music snob as the intended music snob? I mean being incredibly hostile toward the "music snob" and insulting him/her and dissing the band they like?

No, it's a derogatory term I use for indie snobs. There are also metal f@gs, punk f@gs, prog f@gs and so on. Granted I never say those worRAB. but usually because I use in it's place other terms that are equally disparaging.

i'll agree with you there that if it's music you're creating people should at least provide constructive criticism if they don't like it. did this happen to you on rab?

All three of these could be shortened to "BoarRABOfCanada" :p:

they describe me perfectly, especially the avant-garde one.
(I seriously was debating getting a Kraftwerk avatar or not, But I decided to go Math-Rock instead.)

You're a snob.

Actually no it's not. Anyone who projects the idea that they are more sophisticated and cultured than others is a snob. So that is exactly what a snob is.

Classical? Pretentious?! Whaat? :baseball: I think Classical is the one genre that people can't really "hate". I mean, I've never heard someone think it to be pretentious. IFFFF they thought it to be far superior to any other genre and talked your ear off about how great it is and such then maybe. It's more about the person really.

Smooth Jazz is a crowd pleaser as well. I couldn't imagine putting it on and someone feeling as uncomfortable as, say, playing Nargaroth for your conservative aunt Sharon.
