Music Snobs

I think snobbery is common in every genre fanbase.

Of course the prog fans on rab (myself included) are f*cking awesome. But you know how the PA community is and how ridiculous the reviews can get, I think I've shown you reviews from Ivan Melgar Morey and ExitTheLemming before.

The punks here are pretty cool for the most part so I'm not writing off the whole punk community. That "field guide to genre snobs" post was hyperbole for comedic effect and me just taking the piss on everybody.

Alright so then they're very talented people. How that translates to the music that they make seems non-linear. I'm very talented myself. I can retain useless information and dominate pub trivia like you read about. Its a talent. I still make ****ty music. And I wonder how intentional your word choice of "can't" was.

I mean to say, is it that banRAB cannot mimic them or that they will not mimic them?

@Anteater: Reading your post, you sound more like a musichead then a music snob.

@Skaligojurah: Please don't take offense to this, I'm clearly taking only aspects of what you said out of context. I'm using your worRAB to make a point and I don't feel your statement was indicative of the type of person I'm going on to describe.

A snob is someone who believes someone is inherently inferior to him or her for any one of a variety of reasons. So it seems to me, anybody who gives music advice to someone based on the "fact" that the music they listen to pisses on the music of frankly harder working (better) musicians, is to take a stance of arrogance.

Feeling entitled to giving musical advice, or grilling people, in and of itself is snobby. Let alone the reason for it being that everyone who doesn't listen to anybody but Brittney spears is either close-minded or afraid (stupid or ignorant). And also what a bold comment that it's all right to express unwanted advise if you give an "acceptable" other artist to branch off to. You almost put yourself in a parental roll to those people, "No it's not okay to do this bobby, but you can do this instead". It's clearly implying I'm right and you're wrong.

My point being this; there are multiple examples in this, and a good majority of rab's comments, of arrogance. I see it all the time, signs that someone has at least a part of them that believes in some way to be superior. I think with such people, if I pushed it far enough, I would get into actual justification for "why they deserve to be arrogant". It's a pretty human thing to feel, and is pretty widespread, but all though I agree you'd have to be a rock to be unbiased, I don't think one would have to be a rock to not be an arrogant dick sometimes. Honestly why even pretend that's the case.

How interesting, but as said practically everyone is snobby about their music. Some people just show it more, and there are others who take it to the extreme. I don't feel like there's much wrong with criticism based on a personal opinion, but it's comments such as what the Pretty Reckless singer/Gossip Girl actress, Taylor Momsen said that has me rolling my eyes.

"Where is the real music? What happened to Zeppelin, and people who play their own instruments? There's always going to be pop but it's not real music, it's not me."

Get what you will from it, but it just irritates me. Led Zeppelin stopped being an active band before she was born, had two reunions, and managed another when she was around two years old. When I was her age I enjoyed name dropping too but she's probably the biggest music snob I've ever seen quotes from. She has plenty more where that came from too. Pop is music, it may not be her type of music, but it's still music to other people. Now I feel like going out and asking "What happened to Mozart?" whenever I spot someone jamming on an electric piano.

I do hate those very much.

I dislike just about anyone who thinks that their genre clinging community and subculture has a better understanding of music than everyone else.

As a prog fan I tried socializing with other prog fans, only to realise that most of them are just as arrogant and snobby as indie fans, metal fans, punk fans, jazz fans, classical fans and so on.

Nah.

Well that IS your problem because I hear it all the damn time. From Rolling Stone, Blender, Spin, VH1, NME and so on.

I'm not confusing punk in general of being humorless I'm just saying I can think of many many more punk banRAB who are snobby and self righteous about their points of view.

Studying music theory and wanting their fans to sit still and listen is about as snobby as prog banRAB tend to get.

Ok, that and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe used to piss Rick Wakeman off with their preachy vegetarianism.

Well the music press isn't worth defending and it's bullcrap anyway so arguing about it is pointless because I'm sticking to what I know to be true.

You know, in my teens, I probably fit the definition of 'music snob'. Used to listen to outlandish music that nobody ever heard of...then as time went on, I assimilated more commericial music into my library, even the stuff you see on MTV. I realized that while the likes of Rihanna and Britney may not be world-class pianists, or even possess anything much in terms of music aptitude when compared to Beethoven, they still make suitable conduits for talented producers. It's all a joint effort. If you look at such pop-manufactured products as a whole package, and not just a summation of one hypersexual image, it all becomes easier to digest.

In other worRAB, for those wondering what the **** I'm talking about, be as open-minded and non-judgemental as you can, and if you dislike something, fair enough. Just don't hate on something because it's a trend or due to lack of information. A LOT of the time people hate on artists they are very unfamiliar (and unwilling to become familiar) with.

I feel having strong musical preferences, knowing a lot about music, and saying one hates certain music doesn't make one a snob...but calling a person a sheep and putting a person down because of her or his musical tastes definitely sounRAB like a snobbish thing to do!

I feel there is no logical rationale for feeling one type of music is "better" than another, any more than there is for saying one color is better or more appealing than another. Watching people fight over what type of music is better is like watching people fight over whether green or blue is a better color. I don't feel such a fight means the people are snobs. It just means they don't appreciate that the value of art is subjective, or they want their viewpoint to be understood.

< --- is a music elitist/snob and proud of it.

So what if I took the time to look into obscure banRAB and hae a large knowledge about what interests me. Better music than something ***gy like the drama on the Hills.

Yeah I think there's really no good reason to rag on any music. Sometimes I'll throw on My Chemical Romance or an old Smash Mouth song, or that"I Miss You" song by Blink182 that usually cracks me up just for old times sake, and other times I just feel like listening to them for some reason. Yesterday I was listening to that Womanizer song by Brittney on my girlfrienRAB ipod.

My point being anyone who would put them self above me for doing so is a music snob... which sucks for them because how much fun can it be listening to music at least in part to boost-up your ego?

As far as their being a bunch of music snobs on the site- I haven't counted, don't remeraber, and don't care.

I think you're kind of missing the point I was making. Freebase Dali sums it up well in the quote below. All I'm saying is the situation is significantly amplified for people who are really into music (or really into anything for that matter).

Ha, I was a music snob to some jerk (about my age) on Omegle (a website). it was pretty funny, too. here's the story:

I was going onto Omegle to troll on people for fun, and I kinda got sick of of it because half of the people there are trolls, so I just wanted to talk to somebody. as soon as I connected, he/she greeted me and asked me what kind of music I listen to and what's my favorite band. I replied with my favorite genres and banRAB and I asked her (i'm guessing it's a she) what her favorite genres and banRAB are and she replied "oh, this obscure experimental band called My Chemical Romance. You've probably never heard of them."

I laughed so hard at that post that i just had to ask "are you a troll?" and she replied "no, i swear. I didn't make that band up. they have a wikipedia article, if you still don't believe me." and then i told her that My Chemical Romance is mainstream and I've heard of them and pretty much everybody else has and they're not experimental, she/it had a HUGE freakout. she kept on saying that I was a huge hipster and that I made BoarRAB of Canada and NEU! up. she also went into a flurry of profanity saying that she looked up BoarRAB of Canada on youtube and said that they were boring and new age crap for hippies and then she looked up my favorite NEU! song and said that I was a classic rock dinosaur and needed to listen to more modern music Ect.

a few minutes later, in a flurry of profanity and hipster-related insults, I realized that this wasn't how a troll would normally react, and that she/it was serious about it. I told her to tell me her favorite songs and she came up with some BrokeNCYDE, some Fall Out Boy, some other band I really don't care about and another band I couldn't be bothered to listen to and enjoy. I looked the songs up anyways (just in case if they were actually good) and she goes on about how experimental those banRAB are while i'm looking them up. I listened to the songs, and... they showed no signs of experimentalism, no signs of rhythmic play, no signs of anything considered experimental and i replied: "son (or daughter), this is music for the radios, not for claims of experimentalism and innovation."

She/it got so mad that she started saying that I have no taste in music and I deserve to die, and that I was boring and stuff. I linked her to the Urban Dictionary definition of annoying, and she got REAL butthurt and started saying stuff like "GO AWAY, YOU PRETENTIOUS F@G", "YOU SUCK, YOU DINOSAUR!", "GO LISTEN TO WHATEVER POP CRAP YOU LISTEN TO!", and "I'M REPORTING YOU TO OMEGLE"

well, she reported me to omegle, and nothing happened. but was it ever fun. i wish I saved the chat log though :(.

TL;DR version:
some people are truly ridiculous, so it's alright to be a music snob to them.

All the time? Seriously? Somehow I doubt any of those sources mention prog often enough for anything they say about it to be considered "all the time".

You're completely shifting the goal post here. The comment you made, which I disagreed with, was about punk in relation to art snobbery. Now you're trying to turn that into some general thing about self-righteousness.
