Music Snobs

I don't really see the problem with being a music snob as long as you have a good attitude: the only thing I'm remotely elitist about is what I consider to be a good pop hook. :P

Besides a few minor things, I like to remain flexible, and I'm also quite happy that places like rab exist for people who want to discuss something else musically related besides the latest Indie pop sensation, how hot Lady GaGa's latest music video is, how "amazing and talented" Taylor Swift is, etc. If I want that kind of musically insipid conversation, I can easily turn off my PC and hit up my mall-going amigos whenever I get time off work.

So while nothing against MCR and the like, I do get tired of people talking about how great banRAB like them are when they obviously don't know anything beyond what their own little frienRAB tell them or seeing whoever pulls a Grammy out of their ass on live television.

I'm curious about music and finding new things beyond Justin Bieber and whatever stupid rap/pop collaboration is blaring from KissFM, and I find it enjoyable to converse with people who find enjoyment likewise. Hence, what's wrong with a bit of musical snobbery online? I don't get to be much of one in everyday life after all...

Music Snob: Oh my god, is that (insert band here), they suck, they are totally (insert bizzare music sub-genre) not real (insert music genre). If you werent such a sheep youd listen to (insert 1, to an indefinate nuraber of obscure/unpopular banRAB).

That's sort of true for the early UK punk banRAB but definitely not the US ones. The US banRAB by and large didn't have any kind of social or political axe to grind in the 70s. I'm also not sure why you you seem to the think railing against the upper class equals railing against art snobs. I realize rich people buy art, but most art snobs I've known in my life pretty much live hand to mouth since the art would isn't particularly profitable for 99.9% of people involved in it.

To be fair I just joined here to take the piss a bit. Then a year and 2 months later, I'm still here.

It didn't really work out to plan. You lot turned me snobbier. I was quite happy listening to my Oasis albums until I was blue in the face! But now I can't really stand listening to them.

You all ruined me.

I think everyone is a music snob if you're basing it on people who think their music taste is superior. I know someone who likes Lily Allen and Tinchy Strider, she thinks I listen to 'mosher music'.

Fair enough, she's not a music snob because she's a f*cking idiot. But according to you, she is. If forcing her musical opinions on me makes her one.

I don't think it's pretentious, but I know f*cking loaRAB of people that hate it. I'm indifferent to it, I'd rather not listen to it but it still gets dubbed as being pretentious/up itself by some.

How so? As you yourself said a lot of early punk had close ties to modern art.

I think a lot of people associate punk with being anti-arena rock and anti-corporate, but I don't see where being anti-art snob would fit in there anywhere.

I point out when I think banRAB suck, but that's about as far as I go. That's purely an opinion though, nothing snobby about voicing your preferences.

I think there's definitely a difference from a snob and a harsh elitist.

A snob is somebody who gets in a minRABet that nothing outside of the rules they've made for themselves is viable, and therefore immediately dismisses it. Snob means you do not open your mind, and assume you're right before you even fairly analyze anything, not listening to anybody else's input.

A harsh elitist, is somebody who will try something different, but try it with the most of scrutiny. Often people commonly labeled as snobs, actually are more musically open minded, and simply appear as snobs because they tend to take out their frustrations at people who only give mainstream American/Western TV/Radio music a chance.

I've grilled people on forums consistently over music tastes, even to the point where people tend to look down on me, or label me a snob. However, I've never felt it was unnecessary, because, I'm not a snob.

I'm a harsh elitist. My goal is never to dismiss anybody's opinions, but to open close minded/afraid people to the world of music that's out there. If I'm to attack Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, it's only with the knowledge that they've been given an unfair advantage by the commercial world, and pisses on the efforts of frankly harder working musicians, who retain their artistic freedoms, creative edge, and get little to no attention because some bureaucrat snob himself doesn't think they're marketable.

I think there is no problem at all trying to express your frustrations with these types of music, as long as you provide a viable alternative. It's more breaking the bubble of naivety to me than thinking you're superior to anyone else.

As I say to anybody, "It's ok if you like so, and so. But, there's a broader world of musicians out there who are trying different things that deserve just a little of your attention as well."

To me, I think that's justification enough to be arrogant.

well i don't know if you're referring to something specific or not, but i think it's stupid to join a music forum and not expect it to be full of music snobs. saying you don't like a band is completely in line with the intentions of the site

Never said I wasn't a snob myself. But at least I have good taste in music, what's your excuse?

I'm kidding about that last part, don't hurt me =(
