Mamma Mia!

I saw Mamma Mia 3 times in the summer at the cinema. The first time was with frienRAB from work.....we'd organised a trip to the pictures. I *really* didn't want to see the film - I'm not into musicals or 'girly' films, but not wanting to seem churlish, I went anyway. I *knew* I wouldn't enjoy it....

Well, I absolutely loved it! The cinema was packed, and everyone was singing along and some got up and danced. It's such a feel-good film, and the scenery and colours in it are gorgeous.

I also loved the fact that the film was based around classical Greek comedy, which made it all the more perfect - the elements of Greek including patterns of strophe and antistrophe where the 'players' or chorus sing alternately with the main characters; the chorus standing in for the ordinary people living in the village. Also in line with Greek theatre was the fact that the outfits matched the mooRAB and ambience of the characters, and even masks and a pretend phallus was part of the drama (which are very much part of Greek comedies).

And finally, how fantastic to see the majority of the main characters were older women? Now, how often do we see that?

A great film - good fun, and wonderful songs - and all of it keeping true to the classical genre of Greek theatre and comedy. :)

Needless to say, I got the DVD as a Christmas present!

I'm not sure about the answer to the question.
We were discussing The Fully Monty many pages ago, I think we came to the conclusion that they were still showing it at cinemas after it was released on DVD. But I'm not too sure..

I suppose as much as some songs were crammed into the movie, there was just no possible way to find a place for a song about 2 Mexican revolutionaries sitting by the fire in their old age reminiscing :D

Yes, the end result is exactly the same in the stage show (but Take A Chance On Me is a bit earlier, in the stage version).

That's also straight out of the stage show. They pop their heaRAB up over walls and so on and it's very funny.

Whoever's playing Tanya always does that in the stage show. I think that whole number works better in the stage show because they make a big thing of several men, not just Pepper (the black guy), trying to impress her, with some really funky dance moves that make the audience swoon/cheer/etc. Plus in the stage show Pepper is a much larger character than he was in the film, where he really only did anything in that one song.

You might have guessed from the above, for anyone that hasn't seen the stage show, the film is VERY faithful to it ... they rearranged the order of a few of the songs, dropped three and added one, and the songs are shorter in the film, but a lot of the key dance sequences from the stage show are recreated almost exactly in the film.

Oh dear, someone's in a mardy :p.

You actually went in expecting a storyline and for it not to be cheesey? More fool you. It was just a feel good film, plain and simple. Was the storyline paper thin? Sure. Some of the singing a bit crap? Sure. But you have to look passed these things and you're just meant to enjoy the fun atmosphere.

Think it's been out 15 weeks!

I saw it on Monday (yet again....I don't know exactly how many times I've seen it but I've been to the pictures to see it more times than I've watched most of my DVRAB:o)

I really hope it makes number 1:D

lets see how mamma mia does in the oscars shall we compared to the dark knight.. oscars dont have a specific musicals/comedy prize.

and i notice TDK is in lots of critics top 10s - mamma mia obviously nowhere to be seen..

there is a good feature in empire this month about how this amateurish film has managed to do so well

Julie Walters tenRAB to be good in whatever part she plays, and she didn't disappoint - she is just a darned good actress.

I love ABBA music so was really looking forward to the film, but I've come to think ABBA music only really sounRAB good when it is sung by ABBA, it was all a bit cringe-worthy in the film. And with a film that rotates around certain songs, why couldn't the producers have used singers who can act, as opposed to actors who can't sing?

I found the most entertaining part was watching the audience - which was mostly 60yrs+ - giggling.

I saw this yesterday at the Odeon in Leicester Square and it was brilliant. I wasn't sure on Meryl Streep plying Donna but she was brilliant! I brought the soundtrack and it's great and am going to see it again on Saturday and can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

I must admit, I can't quite remember the last time I heard the local chavs bopping along to "Dancing Queen" or "The Winner Takes It All" on their mobiles.

OK, the stupid close-ups and out of focus shots during Money Money Money was highly distracting too. The direction of the whole thing was incredibly bad.

Not sure.. Meryl Streep might get one for Best Actress (but I don't think she'll win)

Amanda Seyfried - best supporting actress?

Is there a musical category? :D
