Mamma Mia!

I saw it this evening and found myself really enjoying it against my better judgement. The whole idea behind the movie and original musical seems a bit bizarre (I always found the Greek island thing a bit strange) and nothing more than just an excuse to bandy about some abba songs, but it just seems to work.

In my opinion Meryl Streep just made the movie for me, she may not be the absolute best singer or dancer in the world but she does it with such aplomb you just can't help admiring her, she steals every scene she is in, along with the girl who played her daughter.

I found the male performances on the poor side overall, especially Colin Firth who thankfully gets very little screen time. Pierce Brosnan was okayish until he opened his mouth to sing then oh my god....ears bleeding time...and I thought Richard Gere was bad in Chicago!!

Still despite all this I really enjoyed it, wouldn't watch it at the flicks again but will definitely buy it whenever it becomes available on dvd for a fiver....:)

That's brilliant. :D

Just got my tickets for the International Stage Show in Newcastle.

Booked in Block B, Row B on 30th December :D

Very, very excited. :D

Because (and this is not to excuse them, but explain why) they are names. If you look at investors, they are usually narrow minded at the best of times and want "bankable" stars, someone who can love it up on Jonathon Ross and people can talk about,
Meryl Streep is a big name who will do lots of pr and publicity if the money is right .... so they paid.

If you consider the show has been going for 9 years and has numerous cast changes in the uk plus all the other actresses who have played the part internationally then you would think they could choose someone who can sing the part, WRONG they need that added bonus of someone you have heard of and has a large fanbase especially when the director has never made a film before.
Hollywood breeRAB its own egos

That's bang on, my local Vue is doing it too. We're going in a massive group to sing and dance along to it, since every showing i've been to, everyones been very british and just sat there singing along in their head.

sorrell is absolutely right. I for one cannot understand why people on here are still raving about this movie.

I mean, that poster that said "I want to buy the soundtrack CD, but can anyone tell me if they have changed the singing in any way to make it half decent and bearable?"

WTF?

I really can't understand this at all. I wish I did, because then I would be churning out some piss-poor product and having hoardes of people spending money on it, while at the same time accepting it's no bloody good 'but just a bit of fun'.

I went to see it last night and really enjoyed it. Julie Walters made me laugh and the singing was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. I would give it 8/10.

Interesting question.

I can't think what songs they could feature and how they would put it in the plot, but perhaps it would explain what happened next. Sky and Sofia going travelling perhaps? or Donna and Sam trying to built the taverna up more?

Saw it for the second time! Absolutely fantastic, everyone was clapping and singing along and there were a few laughs there and Meryl Streep. WOW! Is she really 59?

And it's a suprise that Colin Firth's character in the movie is.............sorry. Don't want to spoil it for anyone. :)

'I work all night and work all day and pay the bills I have to pay.'

Well i've seen both Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight; Thought Dark Night was good, but wouldn't rush back to see it, Mamma Mia on the other hand, i'm off to see it for the 6th time next week!
