Meandering look at post traumatic stress disorder and it's affect on family life after a soldier's particularly harrowing tour of Afghanistan. A worthy subject but the film itself is tepid and uninspiring.

Sleeping With The Enemy (5/10)

When a movie's trailer focuses on the last 20 minutes in an hour and a half long film, you know it's not going to be up to much. At least I wasn't disappointed. This film, which was never a classic in the first place, hasn't aged well.

The Final Destination 3D (6/10)

If this movie was shot entirely in 3D, it didn't come across as such when watching it on TV. The opening race track scene was as good as you could hope for, but the effects in the rest of the movie were a bit meh. The movie itself wasn't that bad...a bit silly in places (the public swimming pool scene), but overall, it was a fun way to spend a Saturday night.
 
Clash Of The Titans (2010)

Sam Worthington was awful - the effects were rubbish - The slaying of Medusa (my favourite bit of the 1981 version) was not a patch on the previous version.

Liam Neeson did not even put much into saying " Release the kraken!
 
Splice

Well, despite the holes in the science and other plot liberties, I didn't find this a bad sci-fi horror film. It gets a bit freaky at the end, which is probably an understatement. If you look at it more as a how not to bring up your child sort of film (how not to be a parent) rather than a "monster" film, you might get the film's premise a bit more. Oh, the CGI works fine for the effects. Worth a watch, but bring a bit of suspension of disbelief.
 
Thief (1981) James Caan is excellent in Michael Mann's thriller about an expert burglar who becomes involved with the mob. Great night time photography from Mann and a stunning performance from Robert Prosky as the mob boss, particularly where the previously amiable gangster makes it clear to Caan in no uncertain terms what he'll do to Caan's family if he doesn't work for him.
 
The Human Centipede - 8.5/10 very effective, simple but had me nervous throughout, which was surprising as I had expected it to be quite poor on account of some of the negative reviews it received

Date Movie - 8/10 (2nd viewing) Steve Carell is a good comedic actor and he worked well with Tina Fey. Enjoyed Mark Wahlberg's appearance (even though I'm not a fan) and thought it was quite well written
 
Beverley Hills Cop III

Rewatched the trilogy over the last few weeks and had forgotten how truly bad this was. Murphy's sassy humour is replaced with slapstick, half the original cast are missing and the shoot-outs are ridiculous even for these kind of films. It's never explained either why the villains are running a childrens theme park... oh dear.

American History X

Ed Norton impressive as right wing skinhead forced to confront his bitterness and rage while incarcerated in a tough as nails prison. First time I've watched it since I saw it on it's release in the cinema and it still has the power to repel, shock and pity. It's not flawless though, I felt the ending was rushed and a few things were left unresolved, but it's a superb film, no matter how hard Edward Furlong tries to ruin it.

A Tale of Two Sisters (2004) - Mindbending Korean horror, which I liked despite being thoroughly confused for the final third. I'm not really much of a horror fan, so I liked the fact that it wasn't all about trying to make the audience jump... most it was more eerie than downright scary.

To be honest I preferred the first two thirRAB of the film to what it turned into in the end. I liked the atmosphere, the setting, and thought the relationship between the two sisters was, ahem, "interesting". By the end I just felt like the director was throwing so many curveballs at me it was impossible to catch them all.

The Wild Blue Yonder (2005) - Sort of a faux-documentary by Werner Herzog telling the tale of a space mission to find a new inhabitable planet like Earth (as told by an alien who did the opposite journey).

It's all put together using actual stock footage from NASA and it's kind of enjoyable in a meditative way - the story is nonsensical really (ha ha, aliens travel millions of light years to Earth and the first thing they do is build a shopping mall) but the pictures are nice and relaxing to look at. It's kind of like watching a Jacques Cousteau film; you don't watch for the plot.
 
Awake - I didn't think I'd like it but it was quite enjoyable. A man goes in for a heart transplant but the anesthetic doesn't work properly and he is "awake" (but paralysed) throughout the whole procedure. But that's just the start of his problems as he hears the conversaions in the Operating Room.....
