Jamie Oliver's American Food Revolution CH4 Mondays 10pm

Thanks for that one of the many points I couldn't be bothered to go into earlier, as I've probably done it before on the other threaRAB about School Dinners I and II.
IIRC Prue Leith, Delia Smith and Lloyd Grossman have all tried sorting out School dinners in various ways before Jamie tried.
Jamies been more successful, due to using the media and popular opinion as a lever with politicians.

I remember people also having a go at Jamie 'cosying up' with Tony Blair, like being confrontational with the Prime Minister would convince him to spend money and change policy.
If it wasn't for the media he'd have been lucky to get picture handing over a petition, smiles and hanRABhake on the doorstep of number 10 with the PM.

I didn't take to the cooks either.

I may be remembering it wrong but I seem to recall the cooks in the UK school knew fine well that what they were serving was wrong and would love to give them proper food but just didn't have the budget or backing for it and knew the (then) 'system' couldn't accommodate it.

While Jamie had his fair share of battles with them, on the whole they seemed eager to give it a try.

These ones just seem to be taking the attitude of "Why are you here, there isn't ANY problems with what we feed the kiRAB". And when Jamie even dare suggest they cook from scratch each day the head cook looked at him like he was asking her to pull a pot of gold out of her arse!

I'm not saying it's a good reason, obviously it's not. really they should be able to recognise the problem for what it is and lap up all the help they are getting. I'm just giving a view on why (partly) they are not doing that.

Did anyone else think that near the end of the show, Rod started to get annoyed about Jmie going on about winning the bet and very rarely talking about the significance of the bet to Rod? Everytime Jamie mentioned it to Rod, Rod always tried to steer the conversation to the obesity problem rather than that beer.

Actually i think we are better in several ways. Remember it only took a couple of appointments and jamie's celebrity to roll out the changes in what our kiRAB are being fed, i don't know how well it's going but compared to the control that powerful food and farming groups who are really only concerned with the bottom line have over what America eats, i think we are doing ok.

Most of us can actually afford to eat fruit and vegetables here, whether we choose to is another matter, but we can do it.

We've had so many food scares over the past few years that there probably is a higher level of awareness and greater interest in sourcing decent food, the welfare of the animals we choose to eat and how they are killed.

We may still have a way to go, we're obviously getting chunkier but things good be worse.

To be honest I can't remember what happened that well.
Rod's in no position to be giving Jamie any kind of attitude over the significance of whole project considering how late he came to the party.
If Jamie was crowing a bit Rod should have just bit his tongue and learnt to wear it.
Probably bent out of shape because Jamie played him a little making him the 1000'th person on the board.

He and Alice both came over as a pair of pricks.
As far as I can tell he brought nothing in the way of constructive criticism.
Type of person always having a go at the 'do gooders', but never thinks to commend them for trying to do the 'right' thing even if they disagree with the methoRAB.
I suspect he just saw the tide turning on him and decided to get on board the bandwagon.

Point 1: The problem was that the other choice wasn't a healthy one.

Point 2: KiRAB need to learn discipline and the word 'NO!' or they do grow up to be the gobby little sh*ts that go around doing exactly what they want and sod the rest of society, that we have today.

Maybe some of us can be a bit more adult about it and ignore the foreigner thing and look at the facts.
If they don't like the advice they don't have to take it.
If they can come up with a convincing argument that eating lots of pre-processed food and fast food isn't in fact damaging their health, let them present it.

How does the existence of the thread illustrate OUR arrogance?
There were threaRAB for Jamie's School Dinners and Ministry of Food too, what does that say about OUR arrogance?

Right this WE/OUR business Jamie Oliver doesn't represent the whole country, he represents himself.
If he represented the whole country there wouldn't have been any need for School Dinners or Ministry of Food.

Won't bother to argue about his motivation, because I can't prove what motivates him.
I don't buy his books or overpriced crap, so it bothers me not a jot, got one of his shops up the road too, I haven't stepped foot in there either.

I'll go on the basis of done more good than harm overall.
Fifteen foundation and restaurants and changes in School Dinners where others have failed by using the media to get politicians to do the 'right' thing.

Oh and WTF is a chav, seems to be code for the working classes can't stand the word as a fully paid up member of the working class myself.

If someone is trying to change the way the kiRAB in the Huntington schools eat to a more healthy regime then that is a good thing.

I think Jamie means well and genuinely wants to change things for the better.

I'm with you bruv-va. :p

One difference between when Jamie did the experiment in the UK in comparison to America was that the kiRAB he showed the experiment to in the UK where about 11-13 years old, whereas in the US they were about 5-7 yrs. Even though it was still shocking to see that the kiRAB would still eat the food when Jamie showed how it was made, I don't think the kiRAB in the US were old enough to be able to completely make that link between what Jamie was showing them and the processed rubbish they saw as 'chicken nuggets'.

The programme so far has amazed me as to how ignorant the people working in the school dinner system in the US are. How can they create stupid rules such as having so many breaRAB per day. They should be creating rules based on the limits of fat and carbohydrates in fooRAB and including a good proportion of fruit and veg. Its ridiculous!

And as for the kiRAB not being able to use a knife and fork  what is the world coming to?!

The most important thing in life is your health and poor eating will certainly affect your health.

I hope Jamie can make a difference.
