IGN Top 100 Animated TV Series Talkback

Someone's totally subjective top 100 list doesnt match my own! I must rage about the injustice of it rather then recognise that this is all based on opinion! They should have asked ME to do the list, to ensure that only correct rankings were given!

My one beef with IGN is that they avoid American Dad like the plague. They cover every Animation Domination show except that. Otherwise I'm cool with 'em.

The absence of Reboot and Beast Wars is something I find extremely puzzling.

It doesn't bother me it's just... puzzling...

After what happen to One Piece, I doubt they're going to give 4Kids a break of any kind, whatsoever. They're not going to accept anything from 4Kids, no matter what(if they're that full of it).

The only thing 4Kids would have to do with TMNT2003 not being on there is the fact no one watches 4Kids TV. Can't be on the list if no one knows it exists/watches it. If it was on a more mainstream channel, then maybe. Though with the 80s series on there, I doubt they still would. It seems people usually love one and hate the other.

If you read the entry for the 80's TMNT, it's pretty obvious that they know about TMNT 2003.

Basically IGN is saying, "We ranked shows by nostalgia rather than actual quality when making this list."

The funny thing is if you check the IGN reviews for the original Ninja Turtle DVDs, they trash all over the show and say if it wasn't for nostalgia the show isn't worth it.

Granted the guy who reviewed the 80's Ninja Turtle DVDs probably aren't the same guys who contributed to the list, but meh.

I like the original TMNT cartoon, but I do realize a lot of it has to do with the fact that I was a kid growing up during the fad when TMNT was considered the best thing ever.

This topic has already been discussed with the completed list. I'm merging the threads accordingly.

Next time, just bump the previous thread if you want to make a comment.

Just to give my 2 pence: I think they've (predictably) overlooked both some of the awesome British cartoons from over the years as well as some stuff from the rest of Europe. It's a disappointingly insular list, I think the UK's Channel 4 Top 100 list from a few years back was much much better on the whole. I always get a bit irritated when international websites simply overlook anything that wasn't on American tv. There's no real excuse because IGN have British writers there.

From the top of my head, most of these should have been in the Top 60 at least:

Bananaman
Bod
Dangermouse (too low at 62)
The Dreamstone (well worth tracking down)
Ducktales (too low at 61)
Charlie and Lola
The Animals of Farthing Wood
Mr. Men (70s version)
Willo the Wisp
Dogtanian
Stressed Eric (at least as good as Duckman)
SuperTed
Monkey Dust (dark dark adult comedy but easily better than stuff like Family Guy or King of the Hill)

Other than that, I think IGN gave far too much respect to MTV titles. How can you justify putting Beavis and Butthead in the top ten and then put the likes of Tom and Jerry, Popeye and the Pink Panther in the high 60s? Are they having a laugh or what? I thought Powerpuff Girls and Thundercats were a bit low in their placements too. And Rugrats is surprisingly low at 90-odd. I remember a time when Garfield would have been a shoo-in, nowhere to be seen now. Funny how times change.

I'd have also liked to have seen a place somewhere for the following American shows (forgive me if some of these are actually there, I only had a quick look through):

Arthur
Bucky O'Hare
The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show(!)
The Raccoons
Top Cat
Wacky Races

Hmmmmm.... maybe we should just do a better one here at TZ.

first of all, I'm not putting too much stock in this list, as IGNs reviews in general have been pretty :S to me
BUT- here are some interesting things I've noticed

1. A LOT of the top shows are action shows and 70s and 80s saturday morning cartoons. Personally, I don't think that these shows generally represent the best of the medium, and a lot of the saturday morning stuff seems to mostly be nostalgia.

2. Almost all of the top 10 except looney tunes were adult oriented comedies with extremely limited action. While they may be some of the best of the sitcom genre, I again don't think they fully represent the versatility of the medium, since a lot of them deal with similar topics and humor.

3. I'm pretty sure all the non-adult CN shows except for clone wars (which btw I have no idea why it was on there. It just seemed like more SW fan service to me) on there were either made by Genndy Tartakovsky or Craig McCracken. Granted, Genndy and Craig are some of the best cartoonists of the day, and my respect for samurai jack is boundless (it seriously deserves a higher place), its also the case that their shows were the only ones that really made a splash outside of the CN community. A lot of less known but still popular and good CN shows were left out , and even prominent ones like EEnE were neglected. It just shows how under appreciated CN is, even though their shows are some of the cartooniest shows around today, and the closest in spirit to the original shorts of the 50s and 60s IMO.
onowait Johnny Bravo was on their too. I'm not too big on that show though, but its OK.

4. My top shows to make the list that didn't make it
TMMoF
Billy and Mandy
Sheep in the Big City (one of the most under-appreciated shows ever, but also one of the best)

I've been thinking about this list, and thinking about how I'd make my top 100 animated series list differently. If I was to make a top 10 ranking series by importance, entertainment, consistancy, standing the test of time, and a tad bit of personal bias, I'd rank the top ten as so:

1: Looney Tunes
2: Batman: The Animated Series
3: The Simpsons
4: Ed, Edd, n' Eddy
5: The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show
6: The Flintstones
7: Neon Genesis Evangelion
8: Jonny Quest
9: Cowboy Bebop
10: King of the Hill

Any comments, mostly how no one will agree with me?

I'd say that's more than a "tad" of personal bias, but to each his/her own.

I mean, I love the original Transformers series, but as an animation critic there's no way objectively that would even rank in a personal top 20 list. Even my personal preference can't overlook that it was just too flawed and too commercial.

And in spite of its longevity and timeless quality, I'd also have a hard time ranking The Flintstones in a top 10 list like this. It's too formulaic and redundant for my tastes, but then so was most H-B TV product.

And which Johnny Quest series are you referring to?

Ehhh, I suppose I'll have to plonk my top 10 down as well.

(in no particular order)

- Astro Boy
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Animated Tales of the World
- Bagpuss
- Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies
- Fleischer Superman
- Silly Symphonies
- the obligitory Simpsons nod
- Talkartoons
- Blind Justice
