Now that this list is complete, I can make a few comments about it. But first, let me preface them by saying I'm not "all worked up" about this list, as it's just put out there by a group of 20 and 30-ish video gamers and pop culture "experts" with their own opinions. A lot of posters have been giving people noise just because they have strong opinions about what a list like this should be like, as do I. Since we don't know what criteria (if any) IGN used to come up this list, it's no less valid than any other list with no specific given criteria. As someone that's been watching animation for quite a long time however, I think I have a pretty good handle on the quality and worthiness of these title to be on such a list. For myself, I think the areas that I use to rank animated series are quality of story/setting and writing, popularity and longevity, and overall influence.
Given all that, I found the list intriguing but flawed. I was happily surprised to see shows I rarely see considered for inclusion on a list like this, such as The Boondocks, Spawn, Dungeons and Dragons, Freakazoid, and Galaxy High. At the same time, quite a number of shows have no business on this list, even at the bottom reaches of it like Harvey Birdman, Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021, Dr. Katz, Star Trek: TAS, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Others may belong on this list, but are ranked either too high or too low like Rugrats (only #92?), Teen Titans (only #83?), Johnny Quest (only #77?), Death Note (#51?..over both Dragonball Z and Pokemon?...too high), Muppet Babies (#31?...no, way...too high), and The Tick (#6? In the top ten?..'fraid not...).
Then there are the shows that aren't on this list but probably should be, especially in light of items that are on it. For instance, I can understand Nicktoons like Avatar, Rugrats, and Spongebob's presence on the list, but what about Danny Phantom or (especially) Fairly Oddparents? FOP deserves to be on it if you can make a case for Invader Zim. A few belong on the list (or to be seriously considered for it) just due to their longevity, such as Ed, and Edd, and Eddy (which I never liked, BTW). For anime, I'd put Star Blazers (Space Cruiser Yamato), Sailor Moon, and Samurai X (Ruroni Kenshin) on the list and rearrange some others. Finally, if classic Disney shows like Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Rescue Rangers, and Ducktales can all make this list (inexplicably in the case of Talespin, IMO), why doesn't the best Disney-produced series since Gargoyles (also on the list, as it well deserves to be) make the list--Kim Possible? 80+ eps and two TV movies with some of the best writing and characters they've ever made? Methinks the people over at IGN stopped watching Disney about 15 years ago.
While I appreciate that a number of new shows are being considered and included on this list (which most lists don't seem to consider), I think a number are overrated (in comparison with the others), given how early it is in their run. I love Spectacular Spiderman but don't think it should be higher than 50 (only one season, gang...). Frisky Dingo? How many eps are there total? Clone Wars (CGI)? Not even one season....
Anyway, just my two cents. I like these kind of lists but I sure don't obsess over them. I'm not banging my head on the wall over this, guys...just opinions...
