For those of you in the LA area (*cough*mukooh*cough*), I sure hope you're planning on coming to the FF party in August. If not, I'd still like to meet you all that weekend - maybe at some other locale? It would be fun!

Maybe we could take in a movie...

I wanted to watch that. The local "art film" theater had it scheduled for a week, but it was only out for, what, three days.
rolleyes.gif
Didn't even make the weekend (new movies come out Wednesdays here).
rolleyes.gif

I have a real bone to pick with that place.
lol.gif
"Bollywood/Hollywood" and "The 25th Hour" don't get to finish their intended runs, but "fear(dot)com" does.

Hmm...I really value both of your opinions, so I may take a second look at some of those films.

I've been sitting on Winged Migration for a month now (got it from NetFlix). I don't know why, but I just can't bring myself to watch it.

In fact, I haven't watched any movies for the last 10 days. Wonder what's wrong with me? :-/

hi emilie.....i saw 'the eye' awhile back....i thought some parts were pretty spooky..

let's just say that these girls are no "angels"....cheap thrills at it's best......

brief synopsis....courtesy of http://imdb.com/ ......
"A conflict of interest between two high-kicking assassin sisters is complicated as they're pursued by the criminals who hired them and an equally high-kicking female cop."

'kilometer zero'
'stoked: the rise and fall of gator' (documentary)

PVScully - I forgot to say that I do like your new avatar.

Where is everyone? Laura, Nicola, Amy?

Well, I never really got into Missippi Masala because of Denzel Washington - I can only take him in certain films, otherwise I just see him.

I just watched Bollywood/Hollywood, another spoof of Hindi films, and laughed my ass off. It is utterly hilarious, and I recommend it for anyone who's well versed (there are a lot of references) in Hindi films.

Still don't think I can watch No Man's Land right now...

There's a lot of great silent films about, one of the most powerful being The Wind. That movie seriously gave me the willies.

A great silent sequence however is in Rififi where there's a robbery scene which lasts something like 25 minutes. It's so absolutely tense that you're just holding your breath - afraid to breathe lest you make a noise! We saw it in class - just the robbery scene, not the whole thing - and I have seriously never witnessed my tutor group so quiet and still
lol.gif
You don't even realise they're not talking, it's all so visual.

Haven't watched it yet, going to pick it up from my mum's tonight. Although she told me who were at #1 and #2
smile.gif
Hooray! I was talking to my boss about it and he reckons there were some weird choices - I remember voting on line a while ago.

I remember when they did the 100 Greatest Movies programme, and Star Wars won. Now I like Star Wars, but greatest movie of all time? I wouldn't have said so. In fact, not even in my top ten. But, each to their own I guess!

I saw Lost in Translation and The Last Samurai.

I really liked LIT, I think it was a very cute movie with two amazing actors.

I didn't care much for TLS. I thought Tom Cruise was pretty awful in it, but the two japanese actors were great! I thought it was more of a vanity movie for Tom Cruise (who doesn't do anything on me to be completely honest!).

I really want to see 21 Grams which just opened here.

I just saw a really good German movie called Good bye, Lenin! I don't know when it's coming out in the US but it's really well done.
This is the summary I found at imdb.com :
East Germany, the year 1989: A young man protests against the regime. His mother watches the police arresting him and suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. Some months later, the GDR does not exist anymore and the mother awakes. Since she has to avoid every excitement, the son tries to set up the GDR again for her in their flat. But the world has changed a lot...

I also saw the The Eye (from Honk Kong).

33m.jpg

Here's the summary:
A blind girl gets a cornea transplant so that she would be able to see again. However, she got more than what she bargained for when she realised she could even see ghosts. And some of these ghosts are down right unfriendly. So she embarks on a journey to find the origins of her cornea and to reveal the history of the previous dead owner ...

It was also very good but kind of scary. Don't go see it if you're spooked easily

Alright, people - where the hell is everyone?

And hello there, Shannon.
smile.gif

Watched a few films totally not worth mentioning (mainstream), and sent back all of my DVDs to NetFlix without watching them because I wasn't in the mood. *is looking for something to really spark her*

Watched "Phone Booth" twice in the last two weeks, so not much to report.
lol.gif
Good movie. Colin rocks.
wink.gif

Up next: "X2." It's coming out 2 days ahead of the USA.
eek.gif
Weirdness!

Hmm. Has anyone seen this French movie called "Day for Night"? I forget the details, but I know it's about the film industry and that it stars Jacqueline Bisset (or however you spell her name). Good movie? (Supposedly.) The DVD has been calling out to me, but I'm not sure if I should buy it or not...

I saw Something's Gotta Give and Cold Mountain last week.

I surprisingly loved Cold Mountain. I was prepared to strongly dislike it. Usually, anytime a film builds up enough buzz that the ordinary citizen starts labeling it an "epic", I slowly back away. However, Cold Mountain surprised me. It did have it's dragging moments, but in all, a great film (with a fantastic soundtrack). The supporting cast made this film, imo. Performances well-done by all, especially Natalie Portman.

Something's Gotta Give---I have conflicting thoughts when assessing this movie. Overall, it was fun, but I found myself loathing Jack Nicholson's character through most of it, and screaming in my head to Diane Keaton, "get a grip!" The movie seemed to go on forever, too. It was predictable, but sometimes you need a movie to just relax and enjoy at face value.

Yeah - I have a friend who has to be in the mood for "reading movies" (movies with subtitles), so that sometimes I have to prod him.

He's usually happy, afterwards, but it takes some work to get him to watch.

I'm a huge fan of his, too! How cool is it that he's got another film coming out!

Xan - congratulations! I'm so glad you get to see it! I still haven't, but NetFlix should be sending me a copy, soon.

Watched Winged Migration over the weekend, which was good - but what was far more amazing, much more interesting, and almost as long as the original film, was the making of documentary. THAT was cool - it turns out that while it's billed as a documentary, the bird scenes were actually staged in a way. They tried a little practiced form of imprinting the wild birds (several different flocks), then took them around the world to film them in different locations, having been trained to fly with the filming equipment.

It's not really cheating, but it's a very clever way to get the spectacular effects of the film. You should all check it out!

Watched Down With Love - nothing special. Ewan McGregor is growing in my estimation (I always liked him, but it's getting stronger), while Renee Zellwegger is falling in my estimation.

Watched A Chinese Ghost Story - I think I prefer Hindi and Japanese films to Chinese films because I'm so much more familiar with the cultures (having spent considerable time in both Japan and India, but not China), and therefore more personally accessible to me. Interesting realization, but I'll still try and get into Chinese films.

I'm so ecstatic!

It looks like I don't have to write a petition to bring Lost in Translation to theaters! It's opening next week!
biggrin.gif

AND I get to watch In America over the weekend!
biggrin.gif

Random movies that were mentioned earlier that are also some of my faves - Magnolia, Muholland Drive, Romy and Michelle's HS Reunion, Groundhog Day. I think most people like a variety of movies and some of us definitely have a few guilty pleasures that you don't really mention being a fan of to anyone (Girls Just Want to Have Fun for one!). I, personally, don't think it takes anything away from your abilities to have an opinion on a film just because you like some fluff or have a preference for fluff. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. That said, I think if you know someone relatively well at all then to some degree you do know if a movie is going to be someone's "style" or if they will like something or not...in general. That just comes with knowing them - doesn't mean you can't try to get them to watch but you do understand that your tastes aren't always the same and it has nothing to do with "getting it".

Not that anyone was saying that! I was just agreeing with what's already been said on the subject
smile.gif

You know, I've had Killing Zoe on tape for ages and never watched it. I definitely need to check it out.

I saw Tape with Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. I was surprised because they all did a nice job. The story was interesting and the movie as a whole was decent. I could imagine seeing it performed as a play - 3 people, one set, dialogue focused.

All this talk about Ghost World makes me want to watch it again! I bought the DVD about a year ago and I don't think I've even taken it out of the wrapper yet - I saw it at the cinema and loved it. It was one of the last movies my ex-boyfriend and I saw together and I think every time I go to take it off the shelf, I get reminded of him!

I hate it when there's a great film/song/book that you love, but can't enjoy because of memories attached! Ah well....slightly off topic there
smile.gif

I've had all day in bed watching TV and films, so I saw Citizen Kane again today. I know it's not at the top of the lists anymore for Best Film Ever Made etc etc but I love the movie. For a film debut Orson Welles does an amazing job, and the cinematography is great for the time. I know Kane wasn't the first movie to try a lot of these 'innovative' camera shots and techniques, but I think it was the first film to put a lot of them all together.

I've also watched Insomnia lately, which I thought was one of the best films of last year. Al Pacino's eyes have more expression in them than most actors do in their entire body, they should have a credit all of their own.

hi shrrshrr....PYRO....sad to say i've never seen a "bollywood" type movie......although i've heard them mentioned in other films that i've seen...most of the time in a humorous way....i can't say too much about indian music either, the only indian musician i've ever really listened to is ravi shankar.....i also liked 'monsoon wedding'...i saw another film by this same director, Mira Nair, a few years ago....it's called 'mississippi masala' with denzel washington, i liked it as well....

oh shrrshrr...is your avatar a chrysanthemum?
just curious.....i'd been meaning to ask...there's a couple of scenes in 'monsoon wedding where one of the men eats a flower...was this a chrysanthemum? i never eaten a flower before..i can't say i've ever known anyone to ever do that...but if it's possible i might just give it a try.....
smile.gif

i've just finished watching a couple of documentaries...both were nominated for an academy award last year...

the first one is 'stevie'....quoted from http://us.imdb.com/ ...."In 1995 Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) returned to rural Southern Illinois to reconnect with Stevie Fielding, a troubled young boy he had been an 'Advocate Big Brother' to ten years earlier. He began a film, a search, to discover not only what had happened to Stevie over the past ten years but to understand the forces that had shaped his entire life. Part way through the filming, Stevie is arrested and charged with a serious crime that tears his family apart. What was to be a modest profile turns into a intimate four and half year chronicle of Stevie, his broken family, the criminal justice system and the filmmaker himself, as they all struggle with what Stevie has done and who he has become."

if, anything this film shows that no matter how much you care for a person and how desperately you try to help them overcome their difficulties, ultimately it all comes down to them being willing to help themselves.....and sometimes people (loved ones) just have to walk away if that person doesn't want to help themselves...it's a matter of survival.....let's just say i've been on both sides of this kind of situation....so i related to 'stevie' a whole lot....

stevie.jpg

the next documentary is 'le peuple migrateur' (winged migration)...a simply beautiful film on the migration of birds.....it has breath taking shots of birds in flight.....and it's filmed in various locations throughout the world...probably one of the scenes i'll always remember is where some geese are flying over a water way and some hunters open fire on them, killing them...and the very next shot shows geese in new york city flying near the twin towers........which i thought was terribly ironic because they were shot down by men as well..........

hope all is well with everyone...all for now.....
