"If you're so depressed, how come you're eating pizza?" - Movie Board Club #9

hi laura..i like philip seymour hoffman too.....i'll go and see any picture that he's in.......he really is a joy to watch...in his last two films, 'love liza' and 'owning mahoney' he's been the leading man....and in each role he's gotten progressively better...both of these movies have been about men getting "behind" something (addicted, obsessed) and continuing to pursue that behavior no matter what the consequences.....i liked both pictures...probably 'owning mahoney' more....i guess i just felt more sympathetic to a compulsive gambler than to a gasoline "huffer"....

hello shrrshrr.....i see that your no longer a mod on this board.......i'll miss your gentle hands on the "reins"....i could never be a mod like laura or yourself.....i tend to get "drunk" with power and very controlling.....it's one of the things i've discovered about myself......i tend to let other people lead now, it's just a simple way for me to practice humility...i'm going through a little bit of funk right now....i don't know why...everything in my life is better than what it ever has been....from the outside everything looks good....but i'm waiting for the other shoe to drop (as my mother would say)....i have this feeling of impending doom...i know this feeling will pass, but i just wish it would be soon.......i won't be going to the fanforum convention in august....that's the time of the year my family and i usually go on vacation....if anything changes i'll let you know......i hope you enjoyed the music and the tape.....

here's a teaser poster for 'le divorce' that i sent to emilie awhile back.....from what i remember her telling me it looks like the release date is now sometime in august?....something about reshooting some scenes.......

le_divorce.jpg

i've been more of a lurker on the tread now....i'd felt like i'd become to much of a snob....i'd become to opinionated for my own good....maybe to much of a critic....i've found it necessary to pull back and just read.......and to learn from other people's opinions and experience (something that has served me so well in the past)........all for now....

"one term in office...one term in prison" what my mother use to say about politicians.....

It's apparently pretty famous, so you might

Our lecturer asked who had seen the whole movie and a lot of people raised their hands. I hadn't seen it before (nor had most of my own class) but it seems to be one of the foreign films that is going to be held as an example forever. And jeez that robbery scene kicked ass! We started at only half-past and by the time it was over we barely had any time for discussion as the class was over and I was shocked, it felt like 30 seconds long

Well, Philip Seymour Hoffman simply rules!

Spellbound is playing at the theater here, but I can't figure out if it's the spelling bee movie, or the classic Hitchcock film!
lol.gif
I'll have to call the theater to find out (I think it's the Hitchcock film, unfortunatley - I love it, but I've seen it many times).

Yeah - it's weird, my local artsy theater is inconsistent, too. Sometimes it says that a film will only play for a few days, so I rush to see it, and it winds up playing for weeks! Which, I supppose, is better than your situation.

I doubt I'll see Matrix: Reloaded in the theaters, despite the special effects. It's gotten such awful reviews from my friends, even here - I'd planned on seeing it last week, but just couldn't bring myself to go, which is a sign. I'd rather re-read Harry Potter!

I'm so happy you liked it that much mukooh! It's definitely one of my favorite films. I think Jean Marais is even more magical when he's filmed by Jean Cocteau. Their love story is one of the most beautiful one I've ever seen. I'll highly recommand the book, Histoires de ma vie (stories of my life) by Jean Marais himself.

PYRO, on IMDB, it's got LiT listed a Philippines release date of February 25, 2004.

It sucks you didn't get FFH that was a brilliant (and a great Focus Features companion piece) to LiT

you had to love the music in 13 going on 30. didn't like it much myself, it's sort of a girly movie but the nostalgia was pretty cool.

Nothing's wrong with you sweetie, believe me I can go weeks without watching a new movie

I just watched the Golden Globes and was very happy to see that Lost in Translation won so many awards.
I haven't seen Mystic River but a good friend of mine loved it, so I'm glad Sean Penn won Best Actor
smile.gif

Tom Cruise is doing a remake of the movie. That doesn't sound good. Well we'll see...

Thanks a lot mukooh for all your recommendations! I really want to see Thirteen and Lost in Translation but neither have come out in France yet.

I saw last night La petite Lili directed by Claude Miller with Ludivine Sagnier (from Swimming Pool). It's the movie I worked on last year. And it's absolutely wonderful. I'm not saying that because I worked on it, but because it's true. I really hope it'll come out soon in the US

mukooh - saw your post on the "last film you saw thread" and couldn't agree more with what you said on Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The guy is brilliant and has such a broad range and fearless pursuit of roles...I just love him.

I saw A Mighty Wind and it was good but I thought it was a little slow getting going. It was good but it was NO Waiting for Guffman
smile.gif

I'm glad you like Michael Maloney. He's a great actor. I saw him in Stratford Upon Avon perform for the Royal Shakespeare Company, I just forget what I saw him in now

! I think it was Henry IV Part I, I'm not sure. But he is impressive to watch.

It's been pretty quiet around this thread for a while, but I'm not only guilty of not posting, but also of hardly watching any movies lately. Because it's been 40 years last week since the assassination of JFK (a pet project of mine) I've spent a lot of time watching documentaries and of course the Oliver Stone movie. I've got quite a few DVDs to watch including Phone Booth, Buffalo Soldiers, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King (all pretty mainstream stuff) that I've been storing up unwatched which I should really get stuck into.

I did see Kill Bill Vol 1 at the cinema the other week, which I enjoyed. I'm going to ask Santa for the soundtrack, which kicked copious amounts of arse.

Thanks shrrshrr! Some of my favourite people!

Last trip to the cinema was a waste of time - I was totally disappointed with Matrix: Reloaded - about 5 minutes into the movie I just felt it was going to suck, and I thought it did. Everything that was new and fresh in the original Matrix was just re-hashed in an OTT, over-budget, over-blown mess.

But I've found out that 25th Hour is playing at one cinema near me for the rest of the week, so I shall have to see that, it won't be around for long. I saw a trailer for Identity which looked interesting. Not sure when it opens here in the UK but I quite fancy that.

Was quite disappointed with 25th Hour when I was watching it, it just wasn't the kind of film that I expected. Thinking back on it now, I might want to watch it again, perhaps when it comes out on DVD over here in the UK. I posted my thoughts on it over on the 'last film you saw' thread, but you know sometimes you've had a bit of time to think about a film you change your opinion on it?

First time I saw The Usual Suspects I was enjoying it, but a friend called me just before the ending and of course I hadn't got a clue what was going on by the time the credits rolled. So I never gave it that much thought. Then the more I read about it, the more I thought about it over the next few months I realised I'd been watching a really good film after all, and now it's one of my favourites!

I know! And who knew that I could feel so emotional about pelicans?

But yeah - took a heck of an effort to make the film, and there was no guarantee that this imprinting method would work. The film wouldn't have been the same without it, though.

Still, the impression the film gives is kind of false when you know how they really did it...

when you find that match let me know....i need a light too....i haven't seen any films for a couple of weeks now.....nothing really interests me either....shrrshrr did you ever have a chance to see 'love the hard way'?.......i didn't think i was going to like it....i found it kind of implausible that a straight "a" student would fall in love with a hustler, but in the end i really enjoyed it....what finally convinced me, after giving the film some thought, is that opposites do attract...(which has proven to be true in some of the relationships that i've had as well).......and that these opposites sometimes take on the characteristics of each other...the film is worth watching just to watch adrien brody act imo.....

hard%20love2.jpg

another film that explores the same theme of opposites attracting and becoming like each other is...'l'homme du train' (the man on the train) which is probably one of the better movies that i've seen in the last few months...

hi shrrshrr while i normally don't watch a film more than once (i saw this film in a theater)...i happened to watch 'winged migration' with a guy from work......and we decided to watch the "making of" section on the dvd....i too was utterly surprised that this wasn't a documentary per se....and i kind of thought it was cheating too.....but to go to that much work making the film, to travel to all of those countries and to imprint the birds make the film that much more watchable....i always knew geese could be imprinted, but pelicans too!!!!!!

Ha! Phone Booth is awesome.

I saw The 25th Hour today and I thought it was really excellent. I didn't think Edward Norton's acting could get any more impressive but I was wrong. Really provocative, superbly scripted, superbly acted movie.

Watched The Recruit last Sunday. I really enjoyed it, and I thought it was pretty good. Colin Farrell and Bridget Moynahan were quite watchable...

I found a bootleg copy of The Pianist on VCD here. Watched the first half.

(Picture quality is pretty good.) It's depressing.
