"If you're so depressed, how come you're eating pizza?" - Movie Board Club #9

It's funny - a movie with that title and I know it's bored a few people to sleep

I tend to like some slow-burning dramas, but it does depend on who is in it. As a Pacino obsessive, I didn't mind it - there's a lot of moody character observation in it and if it was an actor I wasn't keen on, I probably would have dozed off myself.

UK's Channel 4 showed a 2-part show on the 100 top movie stars of all time. I've got it recorded but didn't have a chance to watch any of it - I switched it on briefly and they were discussing Christopher Walken and showed a little bit of The Deer Hunter - another my favourites.

That's the problem with these shows - they make me think 'oh yeah, I want to see that film again....oh, and this one...' so I dig them all out, end up with 50+ films in my 'to watch' pile and then can never decide on what to see

No, it was Baran.

I watched a documentary on David Lynch, which was cool - I had completely forgotten that two of the best chracters from Twin Peaks were in Eraserhead, and I had no idea it had taken 5-6 years to make. I need to watch that again - haven't seen it since my college days (and I wasn't exactly with it when I saw it). The documentary didn't give me any hard punches, but it was fun because it was Lynch (and I'm so sad Jack Nance died - he was in his fifties, but he looked more than 80! Must have been some seriously debilitating disease).

I also watched Real Women Have Curves, which was cute, as expected, and rather light, considering it was backed by HBO - I expected a little better. It was about as light as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which again, was cute, but lighter than I'd expected from an indie film.

No idea what's coming up next in my queue, but I'm looking forward to it.

Also - I fully admit it, I'm dying to see Charlie's Angels, Full Throttle - I love seeing cuties kicking serious butt! Makes me feel girly in the best kind of way.

I actually just bought the book of plays that this Steve Martin movie is based on. Haven't read it yet, but one of my friends says it's pretty hysterical.

The black & white, French Beauty & the Beast actually played here in Houston at the museum on Valentine's Day, but I couldn't find anyone to go with me and I hate going to the theatre alone.

Never seen Lucas.

I did see A View from the Top. And I have since heard Gwyneth referred to it as A View From My Ass...which explains completely the horridness of this movie. It's worse then fluff...it's like dandelion pollen. Fluffy and bad for your allergies.

But What A Girl Wants, despite the titular salute to Christina Aguliera, is actually cute fluff. Amanda Bynes doesn't annoy half as much as I expected her too and Colin Firth, the reason I went to see it in the first place, is quite cute and funny.

Also saw two documentaries in the past week. Comedian and Standing in the Shadows of MoTown. Both as exceptional. I've fallen in love with Ben Harper after his amazing rendition of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg".

Also rented Liberty Heights in my post Oscar, Adrien Brody frenzy. It's really good. I thought it was going to heavy and too dramatic for my current mood, but it's punctuated with alot of cute humour. It may now be one of my favorite movies.

For some reason it rings a bell that you left, Laura, but I guess I just thought you were still with us.

mukooh - when you don't post, I really miss it. I've learned a tremendous amount from you, and think you're anything but a snob. You're like the best at recommending films, and if you don't let me in on some of the treasures you find, I suffer.

Please feel free to post more - I'd like that.

Xan - huh. That's kind of interesting, really, about the actors. I still haven't seen The 25th Hour. I'm a wreck from just watching the DC finale - not sure I can take serious films right now without sinking into the depression abyss further.

And Amy - I forgot to say that I'm so glad you finaly saw (and liked) Amelie! It was such a charming film.

Moto - Confessions of A Dangerous Mind, in my opinion, was ok. I never really bought into a lot of it so I don't think it was as "fun" as the movie was portrayed to be BUT it was decent. I can't vouch for the others but I really put this one in the rental category - personally
smile.gif

Ugh. I'm sorry folks but I hated Insomnia. I thought it was boring and mismarketed - more of a dialogue drama than any kind of mystery or anything. Interestingly, when I did see that one in theatres there was a man sleeping thru the entire thing.

I saw Murder By Numbers with Sandra Bullock recently. Pretty bland.

Aww - this thread isn't dead any more - I'm so happy!

Hiya, everyone!

So, let's see - I'm not going to see Thirteen because I just couldn't take it, but I do want to see American Splendor and Lost in Translation.

Life - I just saw A Mighty Wind and Lost in La Mancha - they were good, as expected, but not great (for reasons I don't want to discuss until you see the films - dont want to spoil you).
smile.gif

Emilie - it's just nice having you around again.

I'm FINALLY going to watch Laurel Canyon and Bend it Like Bekham this weekend - and possibly Italian for Beginners, if I'm not too tired.

I keep watching Hindi films, too - just love 'em.

No problem, CrazyMel - as I posted back to you, try the classic movie thread (do a search for it as it's dropped to the second or third page) - they're great, and should be able to help you.

If any of you are in the New York area, or live somewhere in LA/SanFran/SanDiego, I suggest you check out Crying Ladies. It's a Filipino film, and it's better than much of the dreck that comes out here. (If you catch it and thought it was bad, watch the rest of our movies.)

It's about three professional mourners (all female). In Fil-Chinese tradition, it is favorable to have a lot of crying people at a dead person's wake. So, some families hire people to cry at a wake. The story revolves around three such people. One has recently been let out of prison and is now spending the last few days with her son (whose father is taking to the province), another is a B-movie actress who thinks she's a huge star (her defining moment was getting squished by a giant), and the last is a devout Catholic/social worker who's having an affair with her pregnant friend's husband.

It's funny and witty, and though at some point it drags, and the stories and resolved rather quickly, it's neither tasteless nor stupid. It's a rare breed: A smart Filipino comedy.
lol.gif

Watch it, if only to satisfy your curiosity (and to make this Pinoy proud, for once, of a Filipino film).

I haven't had my fill of "artsy-fartsy" films in ages. In fact, I might forego watching The Matrix: Reloaded in its first week in favor of catching The 25th Hour (what can I say, Edward Norton trumps Keanu "Whoa" Reeves anytime).

I have a question, though: Why is it that there seems to be a glut of X2 actors in The 25th Hour? Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, even Aaron Stanford is in it. Just thought it was odd.
lol.gif

Crap! I've got so much to catch up on.
frown.gif

I'm out of town for the weekend, but so far I've seen One Hour Photo, Abandon, and I bought Diabolique (which I don't think I've ever seen, but have always wanted to).

Hope you're all having a great movie time.
*wishes she could catch up with everyone*

That sounds great - thanks for bringing it to our attention. Do you know when the potential release date is? And total sidenote - I loved Amelie
smile.gif

I bought Frailty on dvd from a video store for almost nothing. I'll probably never watch it again but it's good and I liked it. Has anyone seen it? Bill Paxton? Matthew McCougnahy(SP)?

I saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding this weekend and while it was ok I didn't like it and was very disapointed. Part of that is probably all of the hype. I just felt it was so broad and kind of breezed over everything like icing. It wasn't really too in depth or anything. I guess I felt like you only knew the characters in a really superficial way.

I made contact with one of the executives at the record company and she said that she would be fine with me giving the store people her name as a contact. They had simply never considered selling in this store because they weren't sure the interest was there (which it was).

I would suggest you contact someone at the distributers with your request (check the web for contact names), establish that you're serious, and contact some of the theater people, too, so that you can bandy about names.

It'll take some effort, but you could get it done.

The other thing you can do is start a petition to get the films shown in the Philipines, and submit the petition with your request/inquiry.

I left the modship a few months ago - well, maybe two? Not sure. Female Celebs just wasn't as much fun as it once was so I gave it up

mukooh - you are so NOT a film snob. Really! So, get back to posting

marooned_in_iraq.jpg

yes, he does! the film to see him in is 'owning mahoney'...it's still in theaters and it's one of the best films that i've seen this year.....he's in every scene...he's the main character......he portrays a compulsive gambler...like alot of the films today it's based on a true story....as i remember the film is set in the 1980's....probably in today's world "mahoney" would probably be described as having ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder)...don't you just like psycho babble?

before i saw 'spellbound' i was looking for show times on http://www.fandango.com/default.asp for this film in my area...... they showed this movie title with (1945) beside it....it turned out it was a mistake...i told my friend virginia, who manages the university cinema, about that and she had it corrected....it now reads (2002) on the website......

more documentaries.........

Thanks for the info.

Geez. A classic French movie? I seriously doubt it's out here in the Philippines, esp. without a "major" international distributor. Sigh.

When I move to the USA, then maybe I'll be able to catch it.

Sorry, I realised after I posted it.

I've been waiting since September to see Girl with a Pearl Earring - so for me it's only a month away now *yay*

I hate when they push arthouse films aside - of course there's always a rare occasion where they actually push a film release forward - prime example here in Australia was for Lost in Translation - it was originally supposed to be released here in March/April but because of all the momentum it had been gaining it got moved to the prestigious Boxing Day opening and it's still going strong now 8 weeks after its release.

****

I have to say I'm more a pizza eating person though when it comes to Movies not Popcorn - I don't know I somehow manage to choke on popcorn but pizza can eat a full one and not feel sick at all

Hey, i posted this on the movie faq page, and im sorry to intrude here but i'd be very grateful if anyone of you could help me!!!

Theres this movie that i watched and liked but i cant remember its name, nor the actors...

PLOT (or what i remember of it)

It is an old movie, but it does have color. i'm thinking 60's maybe? There's this woman who's married and has this kid, and the guy (husbands friend i think) comes to stay with them, and him and the wife have an affair. The guy like goes insane and wants her so much that she kills him (accidentally i think). She hides the body, but he suddenly appears as he was rescued but suffers from amnesia. The woman is scared and all, but this guy finally rememebrs what happened when he sees a piece of the kid's game.

I hope this made sense, its killing me!!!
if it helps the woman is blonde.

Thanks!
