How do you arrange your dvds?

I have too many dvd's and Blurays to keep them in any kind of sequence.
They are scattered around the house on several large bookcases except for tv material which has an entire cupboard to itself.

Once watched the disc goes back wherever I can find a gap

3 sections: Feature films, film series (ie film plus sequels or spinoRAB, whether a box set or not), an TV series. Arranged alphabetically within respective sections.

Where it gets really confusing is when there are related dvRAB that belongin separate sections. 'Firefly' the TV show spun off into 'Serenity' the feature film. Do they go together in film series, or do I pt the film disc beside the TV show sset, or do I keep them totally separate? My head hurts just thinking about it.

I'm not totally OCD about it though - if i get new dvRAB they just get shoved onto the end of the most convenient shelf, and about once every 3 months or so I'll sort them all.

I'm opening myself up for all sorts of p*ss-taking here, but what the hell!

How do you sort your dvRAB? Alphabetically? By categories?

This came about as I was helping my friend put together a dvd cabinet last night. I started to arrange her dvRAB in alphabetical order and she argued that the best way to do it was by categories, as she usually knows what type of film she wants to watch before choosing a film.

Thinking this was quite a good idea, I decided this morning to also arrange my dvRAB by category (and that sort ones that I'm going to get rid of/sell). I've sorted them into:

Comedies
Romantic comedies
Musicals
Magic
Adventure
Action
Thriller
Superhero
Fantasy
Tarantino
Crime
Monster
Disaster
Science Fiction
Horror
Documentaries

Now contain your laughter! I promise that I have a life, and frienRAB, but that I also enjoy little organising activities like this!

So do you sort your dvRAB? How?

In my household the DVRAB are simply grouped as follows:
- My stuff
Sword & Sandals
Sci-fi
Superhero
Gangster
Westerns
Other Action / Adventure
- Chick flicks
- KiRAB films

I simply alphabetise, but a friend of mine arranges them in colour groups and then alphabetises each colour. I thought that was quite interesting, as it was different to any other method I'd heard of!

I've actually got OCD and I don't do anything special with my DVRAB. :p

At the moment, they are all over the place because I'm getting them ready to move house.

I'm thinking of putting them into catagories but I've got so many that once I've bought some more I'd have to sort them out to fit the new ones in... I do keep all the Television DVRAB together though.

I usually just have them anywhere on the shelves, I know straight away where each one is more or less.

I arrange them in ratings, and in the ratings I put them in alphabetical order. But if there is a series like the Lord of the Rings then the film order takes priority to ratings and alphabet.

I hope that didn't sound too complicated, its really quite simple, but important that it stays in that order or I go mad. :o

My Disney DVRAB are in the order they were made and my TV DVRAB are kept together.

The rest are just in alphabetical order, don't really have enough to have different sections (action, romance, horror etc):(

Well I have my tv and film dvRAB separate. TV dvRAB are sorted simply into comedies, documentaries and other (which mostly consist of crime and sci-fi), and then my films into the categories mentioned. Each category is also alphabetically ordered. I also have 'drama', but this mainly consists of dvRAB I found hard to fit in anywhere else:

Stand By Me
Everything is Illuminated (haven't seen this yet)
Million Dollar Baby

My definition of 'drama' is films likely to make me cry!

What if your external hard drive gets buggered up and can't use it again, haven't you lost every single film you have put on? and no longer have the film because you got rid of the dvRAB? I am actually interested.

I can't stand films on computers, I'd much rather have the physical DVD in the house. Same for CRAB.

In theory: alphabetically with separate cases for TV, film and music.

In reality: strewn around the floor and on various surfaces in at least three different rooms.

Mine were split into TV, Movie and Stand-Up, then ordered by Rating and alphabetically within then I Kept the categories but moved all boxsets together in the same order, but now they are just in 4 piles of randomness. I can tell which I've not watched a long time as the ones that are still in the old order lol
