Gay themed movies 2: "And they tell you its not natural."

I hadn't, but it looks like an optimistic movie, of which I've not seen enough of lately.

I just watched the video of SLC Punk tonight. One of the trailers was for a 1999 release, The Velocity of Gary, which looks weirdly entertaining, even though the IMDB comments are mostly negative. Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays Det. Goren on L&O:CI, is completely different as the title gay character, Gary. One of the things I like about D'onofrio is how different he seems from one movie to the next (eg, try recognizing him as Al Franken's wastoid brother in "Stuart Saves His Family"). There was some praise for the hottness of the smooching scenes between Gary and the character played by Thomas Jane.

I also watched the video of "Go", which has a gay male couple among the supporting characters. It's kind of funny listening to them bitching about each other's cheating.

Sugar's okay. I made the mistake of buying it before renting it (it's not worth the buy), but whatever. The movie's not great, but Brendan Fehr's performance is brilliant; I was very impressed. I'm surprised he hasn't got more recognition for it from film festivals and such.

...just because I shamelessly pimp Emily Blunt everywhere I go ( ;) ) any My Summer of Love fans? That should be on the opening post's list even though I skimmed through and saw it was mentioned in a minor discussion.

If you thought the Madonna-Britney smooch on the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards was a big nothing, "D.E.B.S.," a heat-free pseudo-lesbian spoof of "Charlie's Angels" by way of "Heathers," offers an hour and a half of the same kind of empty tease drawn out with thin, silly spy-movie sendups.....

hi....just bumping the thread....i wish that i could comment on something worthwhile that would pertain to this thread.....i can't.....today i saw 'd.e.b.s'....which is pretty much summed up by the opening paragraph to this thread.....in the end girl gets girl.......but what good can i really say about a film, when the first 2 minutes of the film are the trailer i've seen numerous times??.....not recommended for theater viewing....dvd rental is recommend only if you have disposable income and time.....

You should watch it nath. It's a British film. It is good. Although first part might bore you but once you've get into the story, it gets better. I promise. Plus, I haven't known a person who didn't shed a tear at the end of the film. :D

I'm in Singapore where they ban gay movies so I don't think I'd ever get to watch Wilde, unless I travel overseas and score a DVD or something. Never watched Velvet Goldmine either. Maybe I'll ebay it.

If anyone's interested in a gay, Taiwanese romantic comedy, check out Formula 17 (Shi qi sui de tian kong, loosely translated as the Sky of Age 17, in Mandarin). It was a huge hit in Taiwan, the same place where domestically-produced movies don't make any money. I've watched the movie like three times already and I still can't get enough of it. It's your typical romcom, except that the couple is a gay couple. There isn't any hot and heavy m/m action though, just a couple of making out scenes and stuff like that. The lead actor is really really really hot so that counts for a lot in my book. :)

And yeah, that film was banned in Singapore too. I bought it when I went back to Taiwan last year and I totally don't regret it.

um....that movie sounds alot like a film i saw a couple of years ago called 'the event'........it stars 2 of my favorite canadian actors.....sarah polley and don mckellar.....and also "indie" queen, parker posey......

trailer here.......

if you have blockbusters around you go to blockbuster.com and search the movie.

It then gives you the option of putting in the city where you live and it'll bring up all the BB stores your area and tell you whether or not they have it.

I love that feature, makes movie hunting so much easier.

hi.....i thought i'd drop by and comment on a film i watched yesterrday...

the film is called 'the gift'....it's a documentary, directed by a woman.........this film deals with some of the aspects of unprotected sex within the gay community.......i guess in order to explain my feeling about this film i'll have to explain a few of the terms used in this film.....

bareback........ unprotected **** sex

gift giver.........one who has and passes on the aids virus

bug catcher.....one who actively seeks to become infected with the aids virus

the gift............a term for contracting the aids virus

ok now..why would anyone in their right mind want to contract the virus that causes aids?.....the view expressed in this film by a number of the participatants is this...."if you get the aids virus then you won't have to worry about getting it...and you don't have to worry about going bareback....to me that 's just crazy thinking....like "gosh i might get hit by a truck crossing the street...so why don't i just cross the street and get hit by a truck that way i don't have to worry about it"......very bizarre....yet with the advent of the internet their are people actually seeking out others...either to become a bug catcher or a gift giver'......i really didn't have a clue that this kind of thing really existed...and i consider myself well informed....now to be fair the film does sound a number of alarms about this practice....and it also follows the story of a bug catcher who has received the gift....and now lives to regret it......

'the gift' is a deeply disturbing film about people seeking and bringing about their own destruction....i'm recommending this film as a precautionary story about a practice that impacts the lives of everyone in our society.........

It was me! Thank you so much for the info! I shall go on a movie hunt for this one! :yay: I agree. Fehr is just full of slashy goodness!

I saw Lost and Delirious, and I thought it was actually pretty good. The love scenes seemed really real, and the actresses did good in being in love.

We have Eating Out 2 at my work...odd considering the company is very 'family oriented' but whatever.

I love love love Imagine me and you---and South of Nowhere.

I have seen Shelter and it is well worth the see, it's a beautiful gem of a movie. And not because it has a gay love story involved. But because the characters are real and have layers to them. It is a real story that could actually happen, where the lead character just happens to be gay.

The story is about Zach who has had to age well before his time. How he is center of his family and bare all the responsibilities and weight of his family's guilt. His father hurt himself years ago and basically does nothing all day and can be no help to either his children or grandchild Cody. His sister Jean is more interested in her own needs, and leaves Zach to raise her son that she ignores. But I do honestly believe that she knows she is too selfish to be a good mother, so she lets Cody be raise by someone who can be there for him physically and emotionally.

It is well acted and everyone is believable in the role they portray. I was really impressed with Trevor Wright and he's not that bad to look at either. There a scene with him in the shower, that my friend was joking that if he only drop the towel she would be so happy. I love how he uses his body to show his emotions before they make love for the first time and afterwards. It's like a weight has been lifted off his soul. And he has this wonderful smile of pure joy on his face.

Zach is a great father to his five year old nephew Cody. He is the only one the small boy can count on and they have an adorable relationship. It doesn't help that Cody steals your heart in every scene he's in, he has to be one of the cutest most talented little boys ever. Cody and Shaun take a real liking to each other and Shaun is another great parental figure in Cody's life.

The relationship between Zach and Shaun is believable and builds at a realistic pace. They goof around, surfing, playing on the beach, drinking beers, and just talking about life. It doesn't matter that Shaun is openly gay and that he's Zach's best friend Gabe's older brother. Zach and Shaun's flow have good chemistry and it is believable that they have know each other for years. It's one of the those people who you know for years, but it's only until recently you realize how they truly see you like no one else.

I love the way that both Gabe and Zach's ex Tori accept the news. They both come to terms with it in their own way, but Gabe's reaction is way funnier. The whole audience was laughing really hard at these moments.
Gabe: I hear they give better head than girls is it true?
Zach: Yeah.
(A guy walks by)Gabe: Do you think he's cute?
Before he leaves, Gabe lets Zach know that they are still best friends and nothing will change. He gives his a supportive hug and leaves Zach to sort out his feelings.

But I think my favorite was the music and how it was used. How it starts with a upbeat song as you watch Zach skate around the streets and see the environment he is from. Then the best one was the song More Than This by Shane Mack because it's lyrics fits the images of screen so perfect. Zach is struggling with what he wants and the choices he's made. And the song is playing about how it is better to have lived and loved and then have pain, than to had nothing. And it is played over a montage of past moments in the movie, very well done.

Could you add 'The Party's Over' about a gay guy with aids who has one finally party to celebrate his life.

I don't know who mentioned it but the movie Sugar is already out on DVD here in the US. It's not easy to find though, I know only one Blockbuster in driving distance of me actually carries it and even that is going to take me a good thirty five minutes to get there.

Normally I wouldn't bother driving that far just to rent a movie but I really want to see it and my only other option is buying it. And I don't know if I want to invest the money in it yet.

But it's got Fehr and he was slashy to start with, I can't turn up the chance of actually seeing him as a gay character.
