Family Guy - "Jerome is the New Black" - Talkback [11/22]

Brain's descent into liberal, atheist preaching and disgusting relationship behavior was a pretty late, contrived instance of character derailment.

So to me, Quagmire ranting about Brian's newfound bad character traits would be like if The Simpsons were to do an episode calling out Homer for his abusive behavior based solely on what's happened on the show since Season 9.

Hey now that I think about what Quagmire said about the reason why he goes after women, maybe if he were to hook up with Cheryl Tiegs he would have a change in character.

I didn't care for Quagmire's long rant against Brian. But it sure was a surprise for Peter to notice Cleveland showed up when it turned out to be just a trick lamp!

Is Jerome going to be a regular to replace Cleveland on Family Guy or not? Or will the search for a Cleveland replacement continue?

The London Gentleman's Club cutaway was nothing but 3 men grunting while reading newspapers.

And is the Apple spinning ball used to promote the new Windows 7 since there was a commercial for it aired earlier in the show with Peter Griffin in a spelling bee?

5/5 without a doubt. The best out of animation domination tonight.
The fact that Quagmire was referencing past episode made it even greater.

Hell the whole bash was BEYOND EPIC!

Actually, he didn't talk about that. Just the fact that they both date bimbos. He chastised Brian for hitting on Peter's wife (something Brian really hasn't done since Play It Again, Brian from a couple of seasons ago which he vowed to Peter not to let Lois come between them again) when Quagmire has done the exact same thing publicly and privately. He also cheated on Cleveland's ex-wife, but yet, it's solely the wife's fault? Takes two to tango.

Seriously? Why else would Glen want to spend five minutes alone with his wife's corpse that's just laying on the ground and not in a casket?

Seriously? Watch Peter Griffin: Husband, Father . . . Brother? and the episode And the Wiener Is... Also, in Emission Impossible, Quagmire has to tell Peter and Lois about how he has to talk about Megan's Law (which is a law that forces communities to be known about pedophiles in their neighborhoods) before he babysits the kids.

While it is ironic that someone of questionable moral character completely laying waste to someone who pretty much rubs his beliefs in everybody's faces, it still doesn't make them in the right to do so. Perhaps before he criticized Brian so harshly, perhaps Quagmire should examine the man in the mirror before he starts throwing stones.

I do believe the burn on Brian was quite a well-deserved one given his actions and beliefs for the past couple seasons. It was made even more so by the delicious irony of somebody like Quagmire to do the dirty deed. I don't think it would have worked with any of the other characters.

At the same time though, the buildup could have been better, since what Brian did to Quagmire was a set of well-intentioned but highly derailed faux pas at him. I mean hell, given Quagmire's character was it wrong for Brian to assume that his beaten sister was one of his bimbos. Never mind the fact that Quagmire was kindof complacent when it came to not stopping his sister's boyfriend from beating her. Yes I got a laugh out of them chastising him for his next faux pas about a deaf brother, but that doesn't cancel out a 'boyfriend beats girl' joke that came about before it.

To be honest, I'm more curious about how they will handle Brian and Quagmire interactions in the future. Will they be nonexistent, or will tension still simmer between them? I kinda thought this would be a one-episode deal where it reaches some apex (probably involving a long dragged out fist fight as per Family Guy) then a clean resolution, but it ended in a rather... subdued manner. I'm still unsure about how I felt about it.

But for the majority part the episode wasn't too bad, but could've been better.

I almost missed out on this one. I really wanted to watch Cold Case but moving it up to 9 made it hard. Luckily the reality show spilled over and I can catch both. :)

Anyway, I laughed my butt off at the CPR scene. I can't believe they went that far.

Also, Quagmire's speech was great. Not that I completely agree with it, but it's always good to have both views in a show.

Quagmire: [FONT=Verdana, Arial]You are the worst person I know. You constantly hit on your best friend's wife, the man who pays for your food and rescued you from certain death and that is how you repay him? And to add insult to injury you defecate all over his yard, and you're such a sponge. You pay for nothing and you always say "oh I'll catch you later" but later never comes! And what really bothers me is you pretend that you're this deep guy who loves women for their souls when all you do is date bimbos, and yeah I date women for their bodies but at least I'm honest about it. I don't buy them a copy of Catcher in the Rye and lecture them with some 7th grade interpretation about how Holden Caulfield is some profound intellectual. He wasn't! He was a spoiled brat and that's why you like him so much. He's you! God, you're pretentious. And you delude yourself by saying you're some great writer even though you're terrible. You know, I should have known Cheryl Tiegs didn't write me that note. She would've known there was no "a" in the word definite. And you know what I hate most about you is your textbook liberal agenda on how we should "legalize pot man", how big business is crushing the underclass and homelessness is the biggest tragedy in America, well what have you done to help? I worked down at the soup kitchen Brian, and I've never seen you down there! You want to help, GRAB A LADLE! And by the way, driving a Prius doesn't make you Jesus Christ. Oh wait, you don't believe in Jesus Christ or any religion for that matter because "religion is for idiots!" Well, who the hell are you to talk down to anyone? You failed college twice, which isn't nearly as bad as your failure as a father. How is that son of yours you never see? But you know what, I could forgive all of that, ALL OF IT...if you weren't such a bore! That's the worst of it, Brian. You're just a big sad alcoholic bore!

Win, which is unusual for Family Guy.

Thanks for transcribing that. I was smiling wide just reading it. The segue from driving a Prius to "religion is for idiots" was my favorite part of the rant. :D

Wow.

You know, I've never been much of a Quagmire fan, and until he became Seth's liberal mouthpiece I used to love Brian, but I've got to say...that was epic. Wrong in some ways, but still epic.

This episode was pretty weak overall, had a long joke that the show needs to be rid of by now (stuffy men coughing from behind newspapers), and had that really tasteless "abusive husband" "joke". But it gains some points back for "Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Peter?" (Peter quickly laughs and goes back to being mad), as well as Quagmire's long-winded rant. I know tons have already mentioned it, but it really was quite satisfying. I think he's referring to the part where he says Brian is horrible for trying to score with Lois, even though Quagmire has done the same thing many times.

I'm very tempt to say one rant from Quagmire isn't enough to save Seth's irritating and continuous Liberal views from prior and most likely, future episodes, but then, I have to also realize Seth isn't the only writer on board. I'm sure there are just as many who work on Family Guy who aren't as pleased on Brian/Seth's filibustering, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and just take in this scene with much glee like the rest of ya. Such is my love/hate nature with this series.

Otherwise, there isn't much to say about this episode. Like Speedy, I consider it rather weak, though I did chuckle at Stewie's self-ego boost when he considered himself the "funniest guy in the room" after he made that obviously lame joke. I always found him amusing whenever he thinks he's cool since it usually isn't the case.

Brian's character has been derailed since the revival, as well as Lois, but that rant was absolutely hilarious and hit just about every nail on its head.

And for everyone complaining about Quagmire being hypocritical, you're really looking way too deep into the scene, it could have been any character telling Brian off, Quagmire just fit the situation.

The real test is going to be if the writers stop writing Brian as a preachy liberal know it all or if they will continue as if this rant never happened.

I thought he said he doesn't deny it during the part of the rant where he said Brian only goes after dumb bimbos, not the part about Lois.

Somebody needs to transcribe this ASAP.
