Community Thread / Tips and Questions

Yeah, I'll have a quick look, although I may hold out 'til tomorrow if I do crit it.

Also, if you do want to do a guide to critiquing, there are a few lurking in the murky depths of the S&L forum that were done way back when APS, Morrissey and Zep2k3 were about. They might make a good starting point.

EDIT: Doublepost :upset:

haha, I don't mind Amanda. She's harmless as long as she's not spamming too heavily. She did do a helluva lot of critting while she was here, too.

I'm really considering starting up a lyrical/songwriting website... the only one I know of that is of any real size is musesmuse, and that's full of middle-aged folks from the Southern states writing country songs.

Whaddya reckon?

There isn't much love for old poets. Marvell is like 1600's. That's one of the reasons that lots of people like modern poets like Bukowski; they've had old style poets pushed on them all through school (especailly Shakespeare) and when they read Bukowski or Duffy or Plath they find it much more accessable and easier to relate to. I like Marvell - try out 'to his coy mistress'.

Who said I was talking about just you? You're not the first, don't flatter yourself.

What makes them emotionally vapid, then? What makes these specifically isolated groups of worRAB dubbed profanity emotionally vapid?

Thanksgiving in Canada is long past....my mom is having a manicure/pedicure party tonight, there is so much good food but I don't really wanna hang out with 15 gossipy mid-aged women.

I was downstairs about to start my English Essay (which counts for 10% of our final mark, and is due in about a week)...and this little girl comes down, her mom is upstairs getting a manicure or whatever...and she's like "you're mom says that you will show me how to play guitar." So I gotta go get my acoustic, and painstakingly spend an hour trying to teach her the chorRAB to Knockin' On Heaven's Door. She wanted to learn Avril Lavigne's version, but I taught her the Dylan version just to spite her. I always have to end up teaching some oddball stranger guitar because my mom told them I would...I hate it!

Surf: I'm in my second yr doing a uni course for creative writing and I have the exact same view as you.

I was wondering if i could post a "How to Respond to Poetry" article or something in the forum? It'll take a few days to write but I think it will be beneficial for the forum.

To be honest, League isn't top-tier Moore material anyway, it's just him goofing off. The books were still much better of course.

The original "opening speech" (I think you mean the sort of monologue when Evie is about to get raped) is from Macbeth; the actual monologues and such Moore exclusively wrote for the character are ridiculously good though.

waterstones is a good store. they give a 10% student discount which is great. interviews are rubbish, i hate them. always the same kind of stuff, especially when its a big franchise like waterstones is. thanks for the crit, i'm getting to editing it soon, but i've got to much reading to catch up on at the moment.

edit: i have now critised everything on the front page. now i'm bored.
