I have to say this new trailer shows the film as being less of what I was expecting and hoping, seems just like any other horror movie, I was hoping for something more sci-fi creepy.
Watched this at the weekend and did enjoy it. Nothing original about it (monster attacking NY - seen that, filmed from 1st person - seen that, no explanation of what's really going on - seen that...) but in combination it was a well put together film. For me the weak link was the monster (& little critters) so was quite glad we didn't see too much of it. Would rather not have seen as much of it towarRAB the end as we did, actually. That would have made an sequel that much more interesting.
For me the cleverest aspect was that no attempt was made to explain what was really happening or what the monster was. As a story about real people caught up in a major disaster and how they react I'd say it was pretty insightful. However, I'm not sure I liked the parallels it had with the Sept 11th events.
By coincidence I watched World Trade Centre (Nic Cage) last night and the obvious similarities between the films made me feel rather guilty about enjoying Cloverfield so much. I'm not sure it's right to deliberately re-enact real-life events where so many people died in horrific circumstances just to scare or excite the film's audience?
I watched it on Friday afternoon on the first showing at 12:50pm, only about a dozen people in the cinema. Typical cinema experience, no staff, and awful crackly sound.
I really enjoyed the film, took me all of about 5mins to get used to the shakey cam. The monster was quite original I thought. I had to laugh at some of HuRAB comments my favourite was him plucking an idea to get to Beths appartment out of thin air then realising what he had just signed himself up for.
That's silly, a film such as this, should be released at the same time, around the world, to keep the mystery alive and keep people interested. If it comes to the UK a FULL month after the U.S release, too much will have been revealed by then and it won't be so "must see"...in my opinion.
So the satellite has no connection to the rest... strange!
Still don't understand why a drilling platform? I presume the drink ingredient was organic and therefore would have been on the seabed, therefore no drilling required.
Here's an idea for a sequel... a guy is on the drilling platform when it is attacked. The attack goes on for some time, and the guy is told to transfer to the recently departed tanker to report back to the NY office. He then transfers off just before the monster attackes the tanker off NY. He goes straight to the NY office, which happens to be one of the first buildings the monster attacks (it having a pathalogical hatred of borring US high-rise architecture). One unlucky guy.
The more I hear about the background to the film, the more I feel sorry for the poor monster.
Saw the movie last night It was excellent it was really well done & the acting for a bunch of unknowns was pulled of very well..bravo
I guess everyone is diffrent when going to see a movie especialy one that has shakey quality but I was told to sit up the back which was what I managed to do & ultimately it felt like I was at the front.
The screening room was a lot smaller & the incline of the seats were a lot more steeper.
My recomendation is to read the signs that SHOULD be posted around the cinema which tell you of the style the movie is shot in & to sit as far back from the screen as you can even if you are able to bring along you own portable seats.
Maybe even try taking a toilet break or two during the quieter moments of the movie (few & far between)
I hada cap that I used from time to time to sheild my eyes for a second or two (it does help)
All in all I wont have a problem going to see this movie again It was impressive and somthing that you could see held everyones attention around the room.
BTW...
Did anyone stay for the extras at the end of the credits
I had a dream that i went to see this last night, and in the film we saw the monster... there was a major plot twist in my dream when we finally saw the monster.....
Ignore the 2 figures in the Hazmat suits. Watch the girl they're holding. They're all shadows behind a screen but you can see that she's literally, physically changing. It occurs during the 2nd trailer at the 1:10 - 1:12 mark. It happens fast but there's no mistaken that either she's turning into something or worse.
I loved it, the same sort of tension as the McPhearson Tapes! You didn't know what was coming it was gripping!
The fact we hardly saw the monster meant we didn't know what the guys were up against! Memories of 911 with the falling buildings, can understand why people were upset over that but I really enjoyed it. Nice to see a 1st person's perspective rather than the perspective of a 3rd person!
I wouldnt bother with the ethan haas websites as JJ Abrams has already stated that they have nothing to do with 1/18/08. He said this on Aintitcool.com:
"The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us."
Appartently the Ethan Haas websites are to do with a new game being released!
Does where the monster cam from need to be explained? People see to need everything explaining these days. I think the impact of this movie works is because you know nothing about the monster
Yes, but the film doesn't have the same impact on a small screen, you really need the huge cinema screen and surround sound to draw you in - luckily my local Cineworld is doing a one-off showing next Wednesday night so I'll be going along!
