Cloverfield/1-18-08

The theories and the hype are the point.
It's one of those instances where the marketing for a film has caught people's attention.
Other examples would be "The Blair Witch Project," or "Snakes On A Plane."

Also, it's a JJ Abrams project.

I did enjoy the film, its a good popcorn film and I thought the special effects were good using the camera effects

The only problem I had with it was the cheesiness of it all, the dialogue towarRAB the end and the inevitable quest to find the beautiful girl

Even after a one night stand, why would you risk your life to go back to save her, I MEAN YOUR BROTHER DIED AND YOU FEEL NOTHING?????

And why one earth would the soldier let them leave the area to certain death - and when they were on the helicopter how come they survived pretty much unscathed but the 2 fully armed up soldiers in front died

When they first were infront of the monster how on earth did they survive all that gunfire and tankfire, the soldiers wouldn't have told them to get out of the way they would have just been shot in the crossfire

I understand that he had to keep filming for the film to have been there, but it was all just a bit implausable

And as professional twentysomethings you think they would realise the lifts wouldnt be working

And the last dialogue 'I love you' just plain schmaltzy

I thought it was good, don't get me wrong

I thought it was fantastic! Blew me away, much more then I expected.

I think that there were two monsters. The first glimpses you saw looked nothing like the monster at the end, and also it didn't look as big as it did previous. Am I reading too much into things? Jesus, its a JJ Abrahms flick. I just watched Lost season 4.1 and was left with the same feeling of unanswered questions.

Also one of the scariest films I have seen for a long time

The drilling platform was no where near the site of the satellite crash. It platform was drilling for an ingredient for the slusho drink that can only be found on the seabed at great depths, this obviously woke the monster which sent it on a rampage. The tanker that capsizes in the movie is from the same company and apparently came from the drilling platform that was destroyed, the monster following a trail of leaking stuff found on the seabed.

In the U.S., Cloverfield made over $41 million this past weekend. It's the largest movie opening ever for January. That's not bad for a movie that has no well known actors. :)

"It's a lion!" That really is f*cking funny. Imagine if it was. It would be the most ridiculous thing ever. A Lion with explosive diorehea by the looks of the trailer, and big enough to knock the head off the Statue of Liberty- Which also suggests it's coming from the sea- maybe it's a sea-lion? :D

It's such a simple idea but very effective. I didn't know anything about it and saw the trailer on the apple site. The fact it gave nothing away and had no title made me do a quick search on it. It was from there that I found out all this stuff.

Although it hasn't made me want to see the film, it has made me curious to find out what it's about. I've played about on the Ethan Haas site and got to the point where the object has blue dots but can't go further then that.

Good comparison of The Mist and Cloverfield.

I was actually glued to my seat in the first 30 mins or so of Cloverfield....but quickly got bored somewhere along the line. The characters simply didn't develop any further and I could have cared less what happened to the lot of them. The special effects is what kept me watching till the end

The Mist on the otherhand, was so cheesy.....and I was ready to switch off after the first 15 mins or so.....but persevered and actually surprised myself by getting the message King wanted us to get in this movie.

IMO The Mist was marginally better (film wise). Not sure about the books.

I suspect that Cloverfield, could be brilliant. It's just a shame that the movie failed to maintain empathy for its main characters.

We should have really felt for their pain, but it just didn't happen. Whereas The Mist had the opposite effect. :)

Snow_garden - it's plot holes like that which ruined it for my fiancee and my best mate too, far too many stupid things happening for little or no reason.

Just watched it now, would of been a lot better without the shaky camera scenario, great tension with regarRAB to the 'main' character.

Just seen this film.

Twasn't great. Majorly over-hyped. It wasn't a BAD film, I've definitely seen worse, but it was by no means great.
I couldn't watch the screen for long perioRAB of time, it felt like I was on the waltzers! The camera constantly shaking gave me a headache and made me feel very queazy :S
But it was pretty funny. Not scary though, oh no, seriously, DISNEY scares me more than this did. The potential was there and there were good points and bad points (too sleepy to do spoilers), but I wouldn't watch it again.

One quick thing I might mention, in one part there is a light in the film that flashes, it's really bright and I had to shut my eyes and cover them with my hanRAB to block it out...surprised this didn't come with a warning to people with epilepsy and the like. But hey ho.

Saw this yesterday and absolutely loved it. The first 10 minutes were spent getting used to the camera work, but once the story kicks in you forget about it completely. What I liked is that I didnt feel like I was watching Cloverfield the film, it felt like I really was watching this footage, even with a few bits of dodgy CGI. At first I also thought that they should have ended it with the helicopter crash, as the silence afterwarRAB was great, but the ending was similar and gave me goosebumps.

Watched Cloverfield tonight on the big screen, it was pretty packed and obviously their was a massive hype so i had high expectations going in.

And from watchin the trailer i knew what to expect, what i got was a pretty solid and at times awesome movie

first off the hand held camera was at times too much but that is just something you have to adapt to (if you thought Greengrass' work on Bourne 3 was shaky this is much worse..but in a good way, just sit far back from the screen)
I thought the jumps from perioRAB between the couple in the past was a good feature and the jumps between filming was similar to the end of dawn of the dead. This type of filming meant that only the best parts was left in which is a nice touch.

The acting was good and not really over the top whih added to the realist feeling I suppose they were getting at. Although the character 'hud' (cameraman) did remind me of that annoying guy in the lift with stewie from family guy (Can you pick me up?) lol

Graphics were just below par for me, even though there incredibily realistic, i dont know it was probaby the whole seeing it through a camcardor and humans mixing with monsters (looked more like a video game at times)

I would definately watch this film again, its one for the cinema so watch it while its there! and get ready for some shaky antics! :D
