Burzum

I was talking about Heathen Front not being racistic and antisemitic organisation. So, even if Varg is a racist, who cares? Where in his songs can you see that? I'm not marrying the guy, I just like his music. I don't need him to be Mother Theresa for that.

When you listen to music, MUSIC is the only thing that you should have in mind. I don't agree with Varg in most of the things, but he makes great music. I can't wait for the new album.

I always felt Vikernes crossed a line that musicians should never do. What a complete a_hole. Reading the title I though he was born-again, but after checking out the link it seems he got some good prison sex.

*facepalm*

I can understand not wanting to give money to Varg, but to suggest that his music should not even be heard or appreciated in an artistic sense is not only absurd but slightly fascistic as well. I love Richard Wagner's music but that does not make me a nazi. I love Rage Against the Machine but I have no desire to violently revolt against the government.

Art and politics are two different things; anyone with half a brain can understand this. To be opposed to allowing people to think independently about these things is in line with the most anti-democratic spirit of censorship, and I'm surprised to find someone I would think to be fairly well-educated and Internet-savvy holding such a view.

i can see where you're coming from, but i don't, nor do i plan on, paying for anything released by burzum. and even if i did, i do not think it supports vikernes' views, which he would hold regardless of his income from burzum. listening to his music doesn't mean one supports him, because there is no inherent connection between the act of listening to and enjoying the music and the act of agreeing with his social/philosophical beliefs.

I read somewhere that Varg had chosen to only use synthesizers because he did not want to make any music that is rooted in rock-n-roll because that music was created by American blacks - two characteristics that he hates.
Maybe you're right though, maybe it's just that they wouldn't give him a guitar in his cell. Back during the hype I remeraber thinking how funny it would be if Varg came to the US to burn some churches and murder some people so that he could get a feel for prison life in the good ol' US of A. I suspect he would find it far less comfortable than the hotel room he got in Norway.

I am incredibly curious to hear what this will be like. Filosofem is an excellent album, albeit one that requires a keen ear to appreciate.

Yeah exactly. I don't let lyrical content or a person making the musics views get in my way of enjoying the music the person is making. If it werent for interviews with Varg I would have no clue of his views and I doubt many people would.

Yeah I enjoy Burzum for sure. Filosofem and the self titled are my favorites.

You're surprised that I follow a moral principle where I try not to support nazi musicians - and you think that's slightly fascist. I don't agree. I don't think it should come as a surprise and since I'm not trying to force my opinion on others, I hardly think it's fascist.

I'm aware he's got fans who love him and I think people should have the freedom to do so - just like I have the freedom to choose who I want to listen to and why. To me, he's a racist and a murderer. For me, that has implications for whether or not I wanna listen to his music.

I never actually got back to you on this, and I know you're tired of it by now, but I wanted to try taking this discussion/debate from a different angle since it really is an interesting one.

First off, I will agree with you that it's probably wrong to financially support an artist who is actively engaged in activities that cause great harm to others. I don't think it's wrong to merely listen to such an artist, though, and I don't see any strong arguments from you regarding this point. As to the morality of pirating music from an artist in order to avoid financially supporting them, I'm not quite sure where I stand there.

The funny thing is, one could probably easily argue that it's wrong to support any music whose proceeRAB go partially to a major record company since these companies are likely lobbying/bribing our governments to pass copyright laws that erode our freedoms and privacy (i.e. ACTA). I would call that a far greater threat to humanity than Varg, and I trust you'll find my logic pretty sound here. Unfortunately much of our music - including some that most of us would consider "essential listening" - seems to come through companies that engage in such politicking. What would you say is the best solution for this?

I said restoration of paganism. Since African Jews were never pagans, paganism can't be restored to them. They heve their own religion and nobody calls them racists because of that.

I don't see why at all I should be interested in supporting a murderous racist like Vikernes. Usually, it takes a little work and dedication to get into music and albums from artists like Burzum. However, I don't think he or his music is worthy of my dedication. The guy is an ******* and even if the music is good - there's plenty more good music out there - most of which was not made by murderous, racist *******s.

i'm interested to see what he comes up with. the dude is crazy, as is a lot of those kiRAB up in norway. don't support his way of thinking but its an interesting train wreck to watch.

Lyrics are just as much a part of the music. Accepting or rejecting their content is one thing, but pretending they don't matter is another.
