Blog Talkback: Toons of the 2000s: Anime We Hope Never Come to America

If it comes to teenage girls killing pregnant teenage girls, opening the stomach and removing their fetus, then yeah....I don't need to see it.

In fact, it disturbs me how often you see girls under 18 naked in anime. Not that age really means anything in fiction, but do we really need to see naked 10 year olds?

If there's going to be nudity in anime, at least make it tasteful where the viewer doesn't feel like he's looking at child porn.

It depends on how different the two shows are. For example, if two fanservice anime focused primarily on plot and character I think it would be appropriate to compare them. But if one focuses 70% on fanservice, and the other 70% on story, there’s not much to compare.

What’s good and what’s bad isn’t always black and white. Say there’s two zombie movies. One has a compelling story and well defined characters but it completely fails at being scary, suspenseful, funny, and action packed. The other zombie exceeds in having lots of top notch scares, suspense, action, and characters who are immensely funny and charming but the story is lackluster and the characters aren’t that well fleshed out. How do you possibly decide which one is the better movie? Its all up to the individual to decide.

If the common census among all the movie critics in the country was that an action movie with a poorly written plot-holed filled story, 5% character development, and more flash than substance was one of the best movies of the genre and one of the greatest of all time would that film be bad or good? Not everything that’s praised is well written and not everything that’s reviled has a poorly written story. There is no ultimate and flawless formula for deciding on whether something is good or bad.

Anyway, I’m not too sure the anime on that list would be unsuccessful in the U.S. Eiken is arguably one of the most loathed and most fanservice filled manga and ova series over here (unless you count hentai) but it was small to decent sized success. I don’t have any official sales figures but after the dvd came out the manga was shortly thereafter licensed. The first six manga did well so MB licensed the next six and it was even on Right Stuf’s best selling list a few times and even had the number #1 spot. The final six manga are on hiatus but MB did negotiate the rights if I remember correctly. The Starz channel Encore Action not only got the broadcast rights but they even aired it about 50 times back when they were showing anime. Also, the manga author got an interview in the Otaku USA magazine. A really niche series but it managed to do well so I wouldn’t be surprised if other fanservice and lolicon titles did well.

So true, theres very few good harem animes...I mean besides Tenchi (wich is Honestly more of a Sci-fi comedy in some aspects) the only good or decently watchable Harem anime is the Ken akamatsu stuff.

& the only decent harems manga of the decade IMPO are again the ken akamatsu stuff & rosario+Vampire, wich has an anime version wich sadly (IMPO..again) just butchers it, the manga is pretty good, but the Anime version is just plain Horrible! (ecspecailly the 2nd season the 1st season was at least watchable.)

Against my better judgement, I read the /a thread.

First off, I didn't realize the fandom still had that level of stupidity. I mean, ugh.

Secondly, the arguments they use are...nonexistent. I mean, I'd reply to their points if there were points to reply to.

Third, anime is cartoons. Sorry. :P

Fourth, I seriously doubt the crap Karl and friends mentioned is the "future", rather, it will be a discarded remnant of the industry's past.

Well then don't watch it. Simple as that.

Saying that the government should "do something about this" is absurd. I have never understood the whole "I don't like it, so nobody should be allowed to see it" mentality.

Personally its the reason for the nudity that bothers me, Nudity done for pure fanservice & perversion is bad (wich is what 90% of nudity in Telvision is period.) I feel sorry for that small percent that put it in to be artisitc & end up having it jumbled in with the massive amount of smut. sad.

Also agree with you cyber, a show like that just sounds wrong, distrurbing and so many other things I hoped to never even hear about in a animated show.

BUt again there are alot of anime that should NEVER be brought over to the U.S.

...why can't we just get some nice wholesome retro shows, Like Dr.Slump or Galaxy Express999, or mabye captian Harlock..that would be nice, to see those dubbed.

I say this because Im afraid modern anime may get more & more Perverse & Profain as the years go by, I hope Im wrong, but if the increse in ecchi,& Niche series over the years continues...I may not be

I guess I should be thankful that I haven't seen any of these anime. One thing I can comment on is how controversial a list this must be, if there are already 5 pages discussing it.

Tsukuyomi Moonphase was boxsetted while limited edition singles sat unsold on shelves, and companies have seemed very gunshy on similar titles ever since (maybe I'll get to eat my words on Dance in the Vampire Bund, but I'm skeptical. However, there are titles from the same staff that should come over first, if only to test the water.) Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Mezzo TV and countless other service driven titles languished on store shelves, resulting in many retailers reassessing there commitment to floor space for anime. ADV and Geneon had some of the most fanservice (and in cases specifically lolicon service like Popotan and Petite Cossette,) heavy libraries in the industry, and in spite of having perennial classics that constantly moved discs to help keep the balance sheet in the black, both ultimately collapsed under the weight unsold, mediocre service titles.

One success does not an industry make. I mean, even MediaBlasters has had to stagger and delay titles because they aren't doing well, and they've got the most service-heavy library of any company currently functional in the US, and they've got an adult division to help balance the budget. Yet, they've clearly had money trouble.

One success does not an industry make.

Because there aren't enough people out there who would buy the DVDs / watch them on TV.

Americans, by and large, don't seem to like older shows anymore.

Also...Dr. Slump...wholesome?

I would buy them

Personally I could care less what the masses like!

Yes, A show a bout a young android girl causeing mayham, & poking Poo is very wholesome..well compared to alot of other anime it is. Ku Ku ku Ku Ku!

(Plus I know at least Dr.S would sale since it was made by toriyama & there's still alot of us Toriyama nuts around.)

Correction: There's a lot of DBZ nuts around.

Everything Toriyama designs doesn't make bank. Remember Blue Dragon's underperformance? Or how Dragon Quest remains in the shadow of Final Fantasy in the States?

three good reasons?, lol, you don't need that many reasons to watch a fanservice show, its a fanservice show, theres only one reason anyone watches those shows and everyone knows it.

Couldn't care less.

Besides, companies like FUNimation do care what the masses like. If they think a series won't do well for them financially, then, really, they have no reason to bring it over.

Plus, what Marvin Tikvah said.
