Because you can't very well claim self defense when you are the one who escalates the situation to where there is a need to defend yourself.

well is society better or worse off now that one of these 4 overachievers is no longer with us?

common fucking intelligence for one. Why would you put yourself at risk of death or serious injury.

So I'm right but wrong. What position are you arguing? Was he wrong to do it, and justly imprisoned? Or was he morally right, but ran up against an immoral law and unjustly imprisoned?

No state that I'm aware of makes you a prisoner in your own home if there are bad people outside. Most states, no matter where you are, empower you to defend yourself when you reasonably believe you are in danger of death or great bodily harm, or to halt the commission of a felony.

There doesn't need to be a law stating "you can leave your home and shoot an unarmed person who isn't on your property".

He was free to leave his home.
The violent mob in his front yard presented a threat to his safety, and he defended himself.

That's all that's required. Anywhere other than NY, CA, MA, or a handful of other legal shitholes, he would have been fine, as you have already agreed.

I just find it funny that you brought up the fact that many states wouldn't have prosecuted the guy as being evidence of his actions being "right" and whoever you were talking to was thus only discussing "legal/illegal" when he was saying the guy was in the wrong... and then a few posts later you mock him by saying he thinks 51% of the population agreeing with something clearly wrong makes it "right".

I just think your 180 turn there was kind of .

Telling criminals to leave my property does not forfeit my right to self defense. If they get violent because I walk my property and tell them to leave, then they are the ones escalating it.

I'd be interested to see what percentage of people will agree that shooting an unarmed person who is in the street and not on private property is.

never had my house TPed but if I was outside and saw someone throwing toilet paper I'd think of something fun for me, and less so for them

the bottome line is we don't know what exactly transpired that caused him to shoot. Its basically his word against theirs.

The prosecution and defense presented "sharply different" versions of how the confrontation developed, the circumstances in which the fatal shot was fired and the role of race in the shooting, Eng wrote.
White, testifying in his defense, said he was awakened around 11 p.m. when Aaron told him, with "absolute terror" in his voice, "these people are coming to try to kill me."

The defense argued that it only belatedly received a tip that Cicciaro had used racial slurs while in the showroom of a Ford dealership only two weeks before the incident at the White home. Had the prosecution provided timely notice of the incident, which had been investigated by the police, the defense could have used the information to test the testimony of Cicciaro's four friends that there was no racial component to the confrontation, Mischel said.

Bullshit. We know he left the safety of his home, and killed a teenager. An adult, regardless of skin color, should have known better. Thus he is going to jail for ending a life when it was not necessary.
