Best horror film?

I would say :

The Ring (Japanese version)
Scream
Final Destination
Poltergeist
Friday the 13th
The Omen
The Exorcist
Don't look now (just for the last scene)
Jaws

The Shining - it's actually just about to start on TCM and I'm going to try to watch it on my own

I've tried this a couple of times before, but haven't got very far! :)

The other one I find really scary is Halloween (the original one), the music is enough for me.

Salems Lot is the only film that scared me witless. I was bout 10-12 at the time when I saw it, and every time I thought I heard scratching at my window for the following week I literally jumped out of my bed

Here are a few classics that I feel every Horror Fan should have in their collection. Even if they don't rate them themselves.

1. Poltergeist
2. The Amityville Horror (original)
3. The Omen (Original)
4. The Evil Dead
5. The Thing
6. Halloween
7. The Wicker Man (Original)
8. The Exorcist
9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original)
10. Hellraiser

They are in no particular order . I would probably throw in the "Psycho" and "Night Of The Living Dead"(Original) to that list also.
It depenRAB on your age and if you appreciate old horror really compared to what they class horror as today. Like "Final Destination" or "Jeepers (awful) Creepers.

If you are 15 aren't you too young to watch 18 rated horror films? Or have I just shown what an oldie out of touch I am?

I would say the scariest film I ever saw was Roman Polanski's 'The Tenant'

Good list of classics, I'd add a few (to cover genres) :

Werewolves
An Americal Werewolf In London
The Howling

Vampires
Near Dark
The Lost Boys

Slasher
Friday the 13th (1st one)
Halloween (1st one)
The Hills Have Eyes (original)
A Nightmare On Elm Street (1st one)

Zombie
Dawn Of The Dead (original)
The Return Of The Living Dead (1st one)

Also a few classic Hammers
Taste The Blood Of Dracula
The Satanic Rites Of Dracula
The Vampire Lovers
The Goul
The Pit And The Pendulum
Witch Finder General

Add "The Devil Rides Out" to that also.

I love your vampire movie choice "The Lost Boys" and "Near Dark" as I don't usually appreciate vampire films but I like those two.

Thanks for these!! I still cant decide which one to buy as you have all put films on here which look excellent and I can only buy one :( o well :)

Thanks very much
