8PSK Conversion

can i aim the dish to get 82 sat using my 3100 until my 6131 arrives?
or does it still require receiver to have 8psk to get a signal on those
transponders?? thx

FOX looks good on Bell too - the fact that it is natively 720p helps a lot, especially when it comes to lack of artifact on fast moving images. The biggest problem with Bell's quality is when they cut the bitrate and downsample to 720p the 1080i US feeds, while FOX's 720p feed has lower bitrate to start with and does not suffer much, if at all. Also, the "lack of artifacts" can often be the result of very aggressive noise removal, which can easily create the illusion of "better looking picture" at the expense of effective resolution.
Nothing for or against Bell or DirectV in general, especially without being able myself to see DirecTv's HD, just pointing out that the setting of this comparison - in a pub, obviously from distance and without seeing the same materlial on the two providers side by side - no conclusions can and should be drawn.

I was chatting to Montreal today, they tell me all HD transponders will be 8PSK by the end of June.

Actually that's not quite accurate...I would venture to say that there are more people with 6141's and 6131's (both capable of supporting external hard drives), without an external hard drive and then there are all the people with 6100's that don't support the external hard drive feature.

So I don't see Bell removing the half hour startup on their PPV's...in fact I see them adding more movies and therefore more channels to it.

You do bring up an interesting point...although I don't know anyone who has recorded a PPV movie specifically to watch it later, (it sorta makes no sense to me, what if you change your mind...and if you don't you can just order it later).

I always thought PPV's were more like an impulse buy kinda thing.

So you would think that Bell will add a few channels by the end of July...if they plan on testing for a month prior to releasing anything of interest (in HD).

Does anyone know if Bell has any plans in this regard...without guessing I mean?

I see in the guide Discovery channel move to 853 to 827 until march 4. It's sing bell introduce new HD french channel because the french channel start a 854 and +. I hope bell introduce RDI, ARTV and TELQ in HD. With 8PSK modulation its possible.

I doubt they will put 5 channels per transponder, that would be UNBELIEVABLY compressed

Sure you can, although you might not see many channels at all.

If you have the 20" Dish you should be able to aim it at both birds, with the use of an SW21 or an SW44.

i really do not know why bell doesn't keep up with dishnetwork when it comes to this kind of stuff since they both use the same equipment and signal types

Taken from here:

Following this math:
Used to be (QPSK): 2bps * 20Msps * 7/8 = 35Mbps
Going to be (8PSK): 3bps * 21.5Msps * 2/3 = 43Mbps

Taking off the overhead it is essentially 3:4 in terms of available bandwidth.
Hence, going to 8PSK can allow for 4 hidef channels where 3 were before, i.e. keeping the same bitrate.
How it will be done in practice, only time will tell.

... but there's no actual programming on TP5 at the moment is there? So is this just testing? I couldn't see anything about this at the normal sources like Lyngsat or B*ll SRDU ...

It all depends how many channels they add. I don't believe that they have more than 3 per channel right now ... if they stick to that, picture quality will be fantastic.

The problem is that for every one of us who wants quality over quantity, there is someone else who wants the opposite. Plus, they can make more money by offering more channels.

Hopefully the switch to MPEG4 will happen before they add too many more channels.
