8PSK Conversion

I'm sure they'll put at least one additional HD channel where there is currently three (netting them about 25-30 additional HD channels). Hopefully MPEG4 will be used beyond that. We'll see.

So it looks like these new channels are on an 8PSK transponder - finally. I guess we should be glad they only put four on there!

My guess is that Bell is going to convert transponders on an as needed basis. That way the picture quality stays the same as it is, rather than improving it, then degrading it again.

I understand what you're saying...I just think it's like why stores have stuff by the cash registers...for impulse buying.

If the PPV starts in one minute...then a certain faction of the people will buy it...(personally I never buy PPV)

PS...I never watch anything live either...the 9200 changed my life the same way my first (in-car) cassette player did.

Don't know if this is related, but for the first time since I owned my 6141, it just suddenly shut off mid viewing.

In round numbers, Bell has 1.8 million customers and, probably, 3 million receivers in active use. A relatively small number of those currently are 8PSK compatible. The cost to swap out the non-8PSK receivers -- 2+ million? -- makes it unlikely Bell will ever do so. Let alone switch to MPEG4 in SD Nimiq 91 anytime "soon".

forgive my ignorance but do all of Bell's current HD receivers support 8SPK? Which ones do and which ones don't?

You will never believe the huge increase in Service Calls this is creating.....lol

Customers are calling in saying they are missing transponders, well yes they are if the are connected to 82 Degrees and are using an SD receiver to look at Signal Strengths...

Any improvement in PQ noticed yet? Thats what I was hoping would happen with this conversion.

so lets concider 4 channels/per would that be more bandwidth than we get now and how much. was reading rodgers thread and they are now starting to reduce bandwidth to average 11 to 15 or so. still more than we could hope for? seems to be no way to get numbers out of bell 9242

thx for fast reply.. i get signal on those fine.. nothing on transponder 3,4,5
which i assume is normal then since 3100 is not 8psk..

What I don't understand is why one hour on NBCHD takes up about 57 minutes of space on the PVR and looks very soft and dull, while one hour on ABCHD takes up about 37 minutes of space on the PVR and looks quite sharp. One hour on TSNHD takes up 60 minutes of space on the PVR and looks very good as well. So it doesn't make sense.

Does anyone know if since our PVR's record the actual stream, with 8PSK would we then have less hard drive used up giving us more storage with HD channels?

I'm not sure if Bell ever promised better picture quality with this conversion so I wouldn't hold my breath :( (Although it would be a pleasant surprise)

The conversion was done to allow Bell to carry more channels which they started to take advantage of with those (crap) 6 new HD Channels.

Yes but 8PSK for all SD and HD is more feasable then using MPEG4 for SD. Hell how many 6100\9200 are there really out there?!?!?!

No, it is not. Most (all?) Bell SD only boxes are not 8PSK ready. And on your last point, there are a hell of a lot of 6100/9200 out there. I have one of each.

Stamps/Argos and Cats/Eskimos games looked decent. Close ups on players were great, and even the colors and sharpness on them on the main cam was good, but the motion artifacts during any motion was brutal. For people that say it's good, you must not notice this and it's not our tv's (the ones that are complaining) as I noticed the same problem on all the tv's in future shop yesterday, all showing Bell. These artifacts stick out really bad on a Pioneer 60" Elite.

Well that is not good news. I was hoping for the provider with the best PVR to also have the best-looking HD channels. All HD channels used to be sharp looking, but now most of them are dull and blurry compared to what they used to be just 2 years ago. I am seriously looking at canceling Bell and going with another provider.

8PSK is a modulation; the data is the same.
MP4 will reduce the data as it's a compression.
