8PSK Conversion

So that's why they were takening longer to show up for me on my 9241 and didn't show up on my 3100 at all.

@jman

The game looked really good here. Didn't notice anything different then the past games. No macroblocking or anything.

MrSat, they are being tested:

1003 - BELL1 Nimiq2/3 82W TP 05 Canada/US beam changed from MPEG2 HD to (0X91) (A)
1004 - BELL2 Nimiq2/3 82W TP 05 Canada/US beam changed from MPEG2 HD to (0X91) (A)
1005 - BELL3 Nimiq2/3 82W TP 05 Canada/US beam changed from MPEG2 HD to (0X91) (A)
1006 - BELL4 Nimiq2/3 82W TP 05 Canada/US beam changed from MPEG2 HD to (0X91) (A)
1007 - BELL5 [(0X91)] added to Nimiq2/3 82W TP 05 Canada/US beam (Available)

I'm not saying it wasn't a good deal! What I am saying is that Bell screwed (at least me)over at least 8 times before I finally received a 6131. Over 3 months and at least 25 phone calls !! They were unprepared manpower wise and had no idea what they were up against. I hope they learned their lesson and will emply better strategy and better use of manpower resources when they switch to MPEG4 !!

I don't think at 9.9 we will see any differences or improvements. Right now, a good portion of transponders are sending only 2 channels, but still at only a bitrate of 8-9 mbps. This is easily seen as an hour recording on the pvr only takes up about 40 minutes of space. However, if they want to go with 4 per transponder, there is no way they will have 4 channels on each one right away because there aren't that many channels, so maybe there will be a slight improvement for a while.

I doubt that will see 5 Per TP.. I mean they only have 25ish Full time HD channels. Unless they plan on adding a Boat load of New HD channels that no one else ( in Canada) is carrying yet then I dont see the point of compressing it that much. 3 Sounds like the sweet spot.

So wait if the transponders above were changed to 8PSK, were they also given a larger bit-rate? What channels are on these transponders?

I can verify it as I was doing some tweaks to my dish and I normally use an old 4700 which I move around with me to connect to the SW44. It gave zero signal strength on most of the transponders with the exception of 1,2,6,15 and 16. The 4700 would not be able to lock onto 8PSK signals so I think the conversion is complete.

Of course you should be able to tell from the vastly improved PQ.......NOT.

Hopefully tommorow not only the channels that are launching will be 8PSK, but hopefully they will also switch some of they existing ones, these new channels that are launching are pretty rediculous.

So people...there was a lot of talk and speculation about this 8PSK Conversion before Bell switched over...with people speculating on how many more HD Channels Bell would add...or that the PQ would now be fabulous.

My question to you is twofold:

Is Bell primed to add more HD Channels for the Fall?

Do you think the PQ has improved a great deal in your eyes?

If you want to aim the dish use any of the following transponders on 82W (TP01, 02, 06, 15 or 16). These are still QPSK and your old receiver will see them. I still use my old deactivated 4700 for dish aiming placed right next to the dish for easy adjustments. It can see all those transponders on 82W

No problems here. If anything I thought the picture was sharper. Same for Jays on Sportsnet.

I'm not trying to get into an arguement over this :)

My point is that the PVR capabilities exist, and if a movie was playing on a single channel, then the user could decide to watch it a) at the appropriate time or b) buy an EHD (although there are other more compelling reasons to buy one). This would be a reasonable approach since having customers pay for EHD's themselves is cheaper than launching a new satellite. Regardless of what they do now in terms of 8PSK or Mpeg4, at some future point the existing birds will need to be replaced or augmented. Before they spend the big $$$'s to launch a new sat (compared to "reasonable" costs for 8PSK, Mpeg4, etc) I sincerely hope they look at the content now provided and possibly determine if there could be savings in bandwidth (or even saving the bandwidth now to be used for more useful purposes such as improved PQ on "necessary" channels). Nobody in my "circle of friends" ever watches a PPV (I think I watched 3 that were given as free compensation over 9 years) so this "seems" to me to be a waste of bandwidth and I was being generous keeping 10 channels around :)

I have always been amazed and confused about the number of PPV channels and the advent of RC-PPV was IMO truely astonishing. But then I've always had a VCR, then multiple VCRs, then a PVR, then multiple PVRs, then a DVD-R, then dual tuner PVRs, etc..... :)

Even in the old VCR days, I rarely watched anything live.

I would think that the pub is taking a risk in using Directv, and does so because the picture quality is superior to Bell. I had Directv many years ago when it was grey market and the SD picture quality was far superior to Bell even 10 years ago. I don't think that things have changed in 10 years. Until we get MPEG4 here in Canada we won't know for sure how good (or bad) Bell HD will look.

oh i understand that its only HD channels,, but i mean one days Bell will come down to the need to convert 8PSK on 91 so i was just inquiring if the 3100,4100,5x00 are all 8PSK compatible?? But i would figure if the 6000 wasnt, then the 2x00, 3x00 and 4x00 with exception to the 4100 wouldnt be 8PSK???

Hopefully they will have the new sat up and running before they need to cram 4 per transponder on all transponders.

Currrently isnt FOXHD, NBCHD, CBSHD, and ABCHD, all crammed on one transponder? Because these channels BY FAR are the worst looking HD channels on BELL TV
