Meryl Streep even made a point about this in her acceptance speech. She nailed it on the nose when she said if a mainstream theater (AMC; Regal) isn't showing a movie... DEMAND they show it because there IS an audience out there who wants to see smart and interesting "art house" pictures (what international movies are pigeonholed into) even if they don't make that much money.
The MPTOAA (Motion Picture Theaters Owners Association of America) is in-bed with the major Hollywood studios (obviously) as well as the MPAA (the ratings board). If they feel a film won't make a lot of money they will find ways to kill it... And by killing I mean limiting its distribution and or giving it an unfavorable rating (NC-17) just so a lot of uneducated parents will automatically think the film is "foreign trash with a lot of sex and nudity" and not let their kids (and thereby parents of other children) go see it.
Hollywood has a huge bias for marketing and producing films for the teen demographic and the PG-13 rating. We have a hug discussion going on about this on the "This Film is Not Yet Rated" thread if you care to take a look.
Yes and no.
Yes because most of the films coming out of Hollywood aren't that good and adhere to the PG-13, teen bias discussed above. Most of the more mature, adult-oriented subject matter is in foreign films... Like The Queen and The Last King of Scotland. You have the occasional rarities like "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond", but the majority of Hollywood films are not intended for persons over the age of 21.
No because they honor films and TV no matter the country of origin. If anything, you could say they are biased against the Indian and Asian film industries because these are never included because all they focus on is North America and Western Europe.
