2007 Golden Globes - Discussion

I've only seen The Departed this year. I have to go out and see some movies! Anyway, I'm so happy that Leonardo Dicaprio is getting such praise, he's turned into an incredible actor!

Clint Eastwood is a beast.

Again, I'll have more to comment when I some more movies.

Is The Last King of Scotland ever going to be in wide release? And what about The Queen? That's one thing that annoys me a little when movies in which the public really hasn't had a chance to watch them. How are we suppose to know if they are good or not when we can't watch them?

Did anyone else think that Arnold shouldn't have presented Best Picture Drama? I thought he did a horrible job. He called Babel "Bobble". LOL

Do you think that the Hollywood Foreign Press is a little bias against Americans?

I just have never understood why movies that only play in certain areas get nominated when hardly anyone has actually seen the movie. Some of the movies that are nominated are ones that I've never even seen a trailer for.

Tell me about it. I really wanted Masi to win... Actually I was excited believing he had it! But he's just starting to get some recognition so, yeah. Maybe next year!

Ok, I really hate that they interviewed someone after walking off the stage. Leave the winners alone for a while. Yes, it's cool that a lot of celebrities are in the audience together but they're human, she's probably shaken up to the Nth degree.

Anyway.

Justin was so great accepting the awar for Prince. I was surprised that Dreamgirls didn't win that one. Maybe the only award they'll get in Jennifer's. I can live with that. I actually feel bad because I don't want Beyonce to win. I haven't even seen the movie, but I don't like her all that much. :(

Who is Beyonce against?

Crash was more realistic..BBM got a lot more buzz..maybe that killed it.

Actually with the history of the GG's Ugly Betty/America winning were actually pretty predictable. The GG's always honor upcoming actresses (Keri Russell, Jennifer Garner, etc).

I wish the awards weren't as predictable as they are--but I can't really judge because I've yet to see The Queen and The Last King of Scotland (But from the clips I've seen--they look fantastic in their respective roles).

I wasn't that surprised by Babel winning over The Departed. It's the Hollywood Foreign Press. I do feel that it isn't an indicator of how the Oscars will go when it comes time for Best Picture. I still think The Departed will win--and should win (and yes I've seen Babel and loved it to pieces).

I agree that I am so happy about Jennifer Hudson winning! And I wish Masi had won for best supporting actor.

I liked the Golden Globes this year, it seemed like they reparted the awards in the drama category instead of a movie taking all the praise, the comedy or musical was different though but I haven't seen either Dreamgirls or Little Miss Sunshine and those were the top contenders I think, I can't wait for those to premiere here and judge them for myself.

I love Forrest Whitaker, I think he deserves the praise he has received, and I like Leo alot, so whoever takes the Oscar will be ok by me, I actually liked better his acting in The Aviator than Jamie Fox's as Ray.

I agree about some of the people that have been mentioned who won for high profile roles and not for being the better actor, for me the worst thing ever was when Julia Roberts won best actress for Erin Brockovich over Ellen Bustyn in Requiem for a Dream, Ellen was just so raw and heartbreaking in that film, one of the best acting I've ever seen in my life.

Thanks for starting the thread.

tao - Is there a Babel thread? Did you post your thoughts on it. I saw this movie, but I wasn't as impressed as most I guess. I thought it was interesting and that the acting was good, but I don't know.

I'm super excited that Little Miss Sunshine got a nomination!!! :yay:

So happy for Leo's nominations. Well deserved!

I'm pretty happy to see Bobby nominated. It did seem to get ripped apart by the critics, but I thought it was pretty teriffic!!!!!!!! I'm stoked it made it in!!!

I agree the momentum does seem to be for Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren. I haven't seen either of those movies so I can't comment.

I think Happy Feet will win the animated category.

I'd love to see Martin Scorcese win for best director, but I'm kind of doubting it.

Dreamgirls isn't that bad of a movie. What I think Dreamgirls main limiting factor is is not only it is a musical, but it is also about African Americans... Afro-American women in particular... And this is a very small demographic to try and market to. The big stars like Beyonce, Eddie Murphy and others have cross-over appeal (to White America), but the core audience this film is marketed to is a very small one to begin with.

The main thing helping the film cross-over IS Jennifer Hudson's popularity and her A.I. notoriety... Plus, she really does steal the show on a 1:1 performance basis if comparing her to Beyonce. Let's hope she bucks the "Dreamgirls Curse" and doesn't end up like Jennifer Holiday did who played Effie in the original Broadway production in 1983 and whose career basically never amounted to anything after it.

.....

As for the rest of the awards...

Some were predictable (Helen Mirren; Forest Whitaker) while others were not like America Ferrera. I think if you are a strictly movie fan and view the GGs as a pre-Oscar predictor then you've got your Oscar wins already laid out for you with the exception of Martin Scorsese because I too feel this will be his year.

I thought it was great is he acknowledges "The Departed" is a remake of "Internal Affairs" which is something you NEVER hear mainstream Hollywood ever admit to, but he does it openly and encourages moviegoers to go see the original along with his version. This is very classy IMO and I wish more and more directors would (or be allowed to) state this because it makes them seem more genuine and not like they are trying to be proclaim they are the best film maker in existence despite their film being the remake of an original concept.

Jennifer Hudson just won and I couldn't be happier for her! She had the better chance in the Supportive Actress, I agree, and I'm glad she went all the way with it! :D

jackiehydelover ahhh, exactly!!!

The problem with PSH winning for Capote is that a lot of people have played or imitated Capote in the same exact same way! It's like this is Capote, mimic him. There's even a newer movie with yet another Capote performance.

Joaquin Phoenix created a character. No Johnny Cash ever looked/sounded/sang/moved like Joaquin Phoenix. It was a character, not an imitation.

You've never heard of The Last King of Scotland? That was advertised everywhere this past summer. I wanted to see it!

And I totally agree on the Oscar buzz for playing real life people. My problem last year was that Hoffman did an imitation of Capote while Joaquin actually made Johnny Cash his own. There was a major difference in how they played the characters. I don't think that Hoffman should of won for Capote... I thought it was a bad film and he didn't help it at all. I was a full on Brokeback Mountain supporter last year (don't get me started on Crash) so I was hoping for Heath but I would have settled for Joaquin... HATED that Hoffman won.

My happiest moment of the GG was was Sacha Baron Cohen won. I thought that Borat was one of the funniest films I've ever seen and he deserved to win. He also had the best speech of the night

I was pulling for Mark Wahlberg even though I knew Jack was going to win... And then Eddie Murphy won... And I was pissed. I was also upset that Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep won (even though I love Meryl and Helen) just because they almost always win! It's not fun to watch awards when it's a given who is going to win. The Queen is not that great of a film!

I was happy for Martin Scorsese... The Departed was great! Can Clint Eastwood please stop winning???? I was livid that he won Best Foreign Film.

TV wise I was surprised that Steve Carrell and The Office walked away empty handed. I must be of the minority when it comes to Ugly Betty. I've tried to watch it a couple of times and I don't think it's funny at all. But I am happy that America one... She's a sweetheart. I was pretty surprised that Grey's won... I was thinking it was going to be a Lost night... Oh well...

Edit Oops... Forgot about Babel. I can't believe it won Best Picture. Total upset IMO... I doubt it'll happen after tonight but I'm still hoping The Departed wins the Oscar for best picture... Or Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan ;)

They don't have to be dead but any actor that plays a REAL PERSON CAN EXCEPT HUGE OSCAR BUZZ:rolleyes:

Nicole Kidman - Virginia Woolf:mad: this Oscar should be recalled that was the worst movie and she wasn't that great.

Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich

Russell Crowe - A Beautiful Mind...I guess he didn't win because John Nash is still alive:rolleyes:

Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line....SHE WASN'T THAT EXCELLENT!!!! She dyed her hair and sang

Joaquin Phoenix - WLK

Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Capote

Jamie Foxx - Ray

Cate Blanchett - The Avaitor

ITS GETTING OUT OF HAND!!!! Hell I should see what real person I look like and call up Hollywood so I can get some Oscar buzz and possibly a win

As far as I know as long as the movie opens in one of the big cities it qualifies (LA, New York).

I'm a little sad about Djimon not getting nominated as well---he's so great in Blood Diamond.

I'm thinking Ryan Gosling will still make it for the Oscars (which I mean come on--is the only award that matters in Hollywood) because Leo won't be able to fill two spots.

I'll be the first to post my thoughts :)

The Departed, Babel and Little Miss Sunshine are my favorite movies of 2006 (So far...I've yet to see Dreamgirls). I'm crazy excited to see movies that I actually love get nominated.

I'm happy to see Kate Winslet get a nomination, and to see Leo get nominated twice.

Sadly though--I'm figuring neither one of them will win...It seems all the momentum is for Helen Mirren and Forrest Whitaker to win.

It'll be interesting come Oscar time to see which movie Leo gets nominated for (The Academy does not allow the same actor to be nominated twice in the same category).

I'm really surprised to see Bobby nominated--Every review I've read tears it apart.

So discuss...any surprises? Any early predictions?
