2007 Academy Awards Discussion

I can't help it.I must give my picks :lol: I'm just an Oscar whore.Perhaps I should start a club: "Oscar Whores".Would anyone join? :lol:

So I only picked certain categories to write about.I've seen most(give or take one or two) of the movie nominated and because I love writing my Oscar picks,I'll write what I think will win and what I would like to see win.

Best Picture:
Will Win: "The Departed"
Should Win: "The Departed" with "Little Miss Sunshine" at a close 2nd
- I think this category is fairly easy.I'm 90% sure "The Departed" will win.I saw all the movies in this category and "The Departed" just had such an edge to it.It was too long but I enjoyed every moment of it.Also,most Oscar voters have loved it.Honestly,I also LOVE LOVED "Little Miss Sunshine" but I don't know if it's an Oscar movie.A great film though.I own the dvd.

Actor:
Will:Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland"
Should: Leonardo DiCaprio, "Blood Diamond (2nd choice:Ryan Gosling, "Half Nelson")
- Forest Whitaker is a shoo-in.I really enjoyed his performance...very powerful and scary.He def. would be my third choice in this category..maybe even a tie for second if I didn't think he was a shoo-in.But I felt his performance was alittle over the top.It needed to be that way but...it was very big.It was very Oscar.I didn't see Venus so I wouldn't know about that one but Leo is my #1 pick.He was AMAZING in "Blood Diamond".Anyone who has not seen BD will think he deserved it for "The Departed".That's what I thought before I saw BD last weekend.But if Leo was a 10 in Departed,he was a 20 in "Blood Diamond".Leo played such a complex character who was so good and so bad at the same time and his performance made me cry at the end.Me! I fell in love with him through his movies this year.But honestly,GO SEE BLOOD DIAMOND! Now...just for him,if anything.Ryan Gosling is my second choice.He's go .1% chance of winning but his performance was truly spot on.

Actress:
Will: Helen Mirren in "The Queen"
Should:Helen Mirren in "The Queen"
- If Forest Whitaker is a 99% for a win,Helen Mirren is a 99.99999%.What can I say? She was fab-o.She deserves it.She will get it.She's the Queen of Oscar Season.

Supporting Actor:
Will:Eddie Murphy in "Dreamgirls"
Should:Mark Wahlberg in "The Departed"
- Eddie will win.I'm pretty sure.And I loved his performance in "Dreamgirls",a movie that I thought was way overrated.Love the music but gosh,I was happy it didn't get nominated.It didn't deserve a Best Picture nom.But Mark Wahlberg gave the kind of performance that makes you really go 'Wow'.He's no Marky Mark anymore.Alan Arkin was also just perfect and Djimon Hounsou broke my heart in BD but Mark is my pick.Maybe next year though.

Supporting Actress:
Will:Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls"
Should:Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls"
- Surprise Surprise...she is the Underdog story of the year and unless the sky falls,she will win.And I think she should.She was amazing and without her and Eddie,I would've wanted my $11 back.She deserves it.I also loved Abigail Breslin but she has years and years to win.

Directing:
Will: Martin Scorsese for "The Departed"
Should:SEE ABOVE!
- Though Clint is not out of the picture,Martin should and hopefully will win."The Departed" was handled beautifully in his hands and hello,he's Oscar's biggest upset story.

Foreign Language Film:
Will:Honestly...I don't know.
Should:Pan's Labyrinth
- Pan's was a truly heartbreaking and gorgeous flick and deserves to win.But will it? I haven't seen enough of these movies to know.

Others that I would like to see win:
"The Departed" for Best Adapted Screenplay because it was so good.Tie for me between "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Queen" for Best Original Screenplay."An Incon. Truth" for Best Docu.I know it will win.

Those are my picks...from an Oscar nut.Feel free to respond.I love getting into Oscar talks.I'm too much of a movie fan ;)
 
I think the most shocking moment for me was the best picture, I was hoping for The Departed to win but I thought Babel would win, it was obviously the kind of film that the Academy usually goes for. So I was pleasently surprised when they gave it to The Departed. :D
 
I love Meryl, but I don't like that she got nominated for The Devil Wears Prada. So many other great performances out there this past year that I would have liked better in that slot.

Where was Naomi Watts nominated? I don't remember her getting a nom at all.


I was a bit surprised about Leo getting in for Blood Diamond---I thought he was going to push for The Departed in Supporting--but I'm guessing he left them both in for Lead and BD just happened to get more votes. I think The Departed was a much better film overall and made his acting look even better. He was fantastic in BD though--there's one scene that was so good that I said "Nominate him just for that scene alone" when I was watching the movie.


I prefered Mark over Jack in The Departed--but I was surprised to not see him nominated as Jack was actually really great in the film (as I've said before--not really a fan of him normally) Mark stole every single scene that he was in. When he was on camera you automatically focused on him he was just that good.
 
^ I don't think she has. I just checked on imdb. "Hounddog" might end up giving her a nom next year, based on the rape scene thats getting so much buzz
 
I really don't think people were rooting for her to fail 'cause she's an African-American. And the same goes for Eddie. Forest won and you don't see any one complaining about that. 'Cause his job on that movie was perfect, he was, indeed, the best choice for winning best actor because his work was amazing.

I think a lot of people wasn't rooting for J. Hudson or Eddie, 'cause they really didn't liked the movie or thought that maybe some of the others nominies were better sutted to win. It doesn't mean they wanted to see them lose 'cause they were African-Americans. At least, until now, I have only seen people here criticizing performances, not the race the actors belong to.
 
Yeah the producers of the film get the Best Picture Award.

I love that I really enjoyed the movies that are nominated this year. I normally can't stand a few of the movies--but this year I think the Academy did a lot of things right.
 
Mavericks: I'm doing the same thing...except I'm silently wishing that anyone else nominated in the category besides Hudson will win.
 
^ i hope she does. Ellen is so good at hosting awards shows so i don't think she'll disappoint. And she might stick to movies only, nothing else. She already said she will no tbe making any jokes about Britney Spears like other comedians are doing. I respect her so much for that, for knowing not to pick on someone who is obviously suffering from some type of depression.


i ran down from my room to the comp lab just to say how awesome i thought J. Holliday did performing on the preshow!!! She sounded so good. I wonder if Jennier Hudson was watching, i hope she was, that would be so awesome if she watched

I wasnt too fond of Dreamgirls, m not gonna say I was unhappy Jennifer won because I wasnt too pleased with the other nominees as well, and she was OK, I nearly fell asleep during the movie, but she kept me awake, sometimes with her surprisingly good acting (compared to the rest) and sometims with her very loud voice, but I am very happy Eddie didnt win, Id heard a lot about his performance and I payed a lot of attention but I didnt see anything special about it, sure it was better compared to his older work but not compared to Mark and Alan Arkin.

I has nothing to do with the fact that they are african-american, its because the other nominees were better, there are amazing african-american actors and actresses such as Denzel Washington and Halle Berry and I was vey happy when they won but I didnt feel that way this year!

BTW I loved Crash and I seriousley cannot understand why people didnt like it, it was powerful and affecting andthe characters seemed real. :D but oh well, maybe Brokback was better but I havent seen it so I cant say!
 
Has Jennifer herself said that she was an inspiration(i really don't know lol)? She is always seems so thankful for all her success. In fact, i've been reading a lot of reviews of the Oscars where they say her acceptance speech was the only genuine emotion in the whole show. The only times i've ever seen her come as across as "cocky" maybe is when she talks about her weight , and i don't think thats a bad thing at all.

and i don't think AI helped her get the audition thatmuch. I think I have an interview with 1 of the fimmakers somewhere in my dorm room where he said they almost counted that as something against her. If her being on AI mattered theen Fantasia would've gotten the role when she auditioned cuz it was mentioned that she did awesome when she auditioned for Effie. And she would've been a safer choice seeing as how she won AI and had a platinum album whereas Jennifer had fallen off the radar. Plus vocal-wise, Fantasia sounds more like J. Holliday than Jennifer does, another reason why maybe they would'v eloved to go with Fantasia. And Jennifer knows how to act. Even with the songs, she knows how to act them. I caught the ending of some show on BET. From what i could gather from the few minutes, it was about this girl who wanted to sing all the Dreamgirls songs and they brought jennifer on to give her lessons. And Jennifer told her right after the girl first performed for her(she did "i am changing"), that she needed to sing with more feeling and why that song needed to be sung with feeling.
 
I'm a big enough nerd to do this, I've seen the majority of the films nominated--so I'm going to make my picks now (in bold)-and I'm not saying I think they will, it's more the film that I want to win. :)


Best Picture:
"Babel," "The Departed," "Letters From Iwo Jima," "Little Miss Sunshine," "The Queen."

I'm actually pretty torn on this category, I loved 4 of the 5 movies nominated this year (not the biggest fan of The Queen).

2. Actor:
Leonardo DiCaprio, "Blood Diamond"; Ryan Gosling, "Half Nelson"; Peter O'Toole, "Venus"; Will Smith, "The Pursuit of Happyness"; Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland."

I've only seen two of the nominated actors (Forest and Leo) so this category isn't a for sure with me. If Leo had been nominated for The Departed instead--this vote might have been different.


3. Actress:
Penelope Cruz, "Volver"; Judi Dench, "Notes on a Scandal"; Helen Mirren, "The Queen"; Meryl Streep, "The Devil Wears Prada"; Kate Winslet, "Little Children."

Judi Dench was scary good in this role. And I definitely thought she was better than the leading contender, Helen Mirren. DIdn't get a chance to see Kate Winslet though--as I blinked and the movie was pulled from the theatre where I live. (Why must I blink!)

4. Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"; Jackie Earle Haley, "Little Children"; Djimon Hounsou, "Blood Diamond"; Eddie Murphy, "Dreamgirls"; Mark Wahlberg, "The Departed."

I know my pick has an almost zero chance of winning--but he rocked in this part and stole every single scene he was in.


5. Supporting Actress:
Adriana Barraza, "Babel"; Cate Blanchett, "Notes on a Scandal"; Abigail Breslin, "Little Miss Sunshine"; Jennifer Hudson, "Dreamgirls"; Rinko Kikuchi, "Babel."

I had to highlight the two--they were both amazing.

6. Directing:
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, "Babel"; Martin Scorsese, "The Departed"; Clint Eastwood, "Letters From Iwo Jima"; Stephen Frears, "The Queen"; Paul Greengrass, "United 93."

He had amazing camera angles and to adapt a movie and make it his own is pretty amazing.


Who else wants to make a go of it?

I think either one of these pics will win and I'll be happy either way. I will cry if it's Babel. :lol:

I would love to see Leo win, but like everyone else, I would have preferred to see him get the nod for The Departed. But, either way, I just don't think it's his year. Forrest seems to be a lock. Ryan and Will would be big upsets, but they were both teriffic!

I'd love to see Djimon win. Sadly I haven't seen Little Children, but I hear Jackie Earle Haley is amazing. I think Eddie will win, but it really is one of the best races this year because I could see it going 3 or 4 different directions. And unlike alot of people here, I thought Eddie did a teriffic job in Dreamgirls. And I guess a part of it is because it was something so different for him.

I think Jennifer will win this category. And I think it would be well deserved. She was amazing!! And like I've said before, not just any actress or singer could have done that role. I give Jennifer alot of props. I wouldn't be upset if Cate or Abigail won as I loved both of them as well. I thought Adriana and Rinko were both good but not to win in comparison to the others.

Scorsese all the way! I think it's his year. I wouldn't be shocked if Eastwood takes it for Iwo Jima though.
