I just watched United 93 and I can now see why Paul Greengrass was nominated for best director. I actually wouldn't be surprised it he won... Even though I'm pulling for Martin

So far, the only award I was really disappointed about was Best Supporting Actor. I wanted Mark Wahlberg to win so badly. :sigh:

I'm not really a fan either but she really put everything into that one...much better than her grammy performance of it

I was pleased for Jennifer and would of been sad for her if she had of lost after winning everything else but she didnt really deserve it...she was great but hasnt paid her dues

Adrianna Barrazza was fantastic in Babel she really deserved it

Yeah, most of these were really predictable. My only big shock was Dreamgirls not making it in to Best Picture.

tao - After finally seeing the movie I wasn't all that impressed. Helen did well but it was nothing spectacular and I didn't find the movie all that great either. I think I'd choose anyone else in that category over her. Well, I haven't seen Volver so I'm not sure about Penelope.

The Academy has some problems in telling the difference between a lead and supporting role.
Forest Whitaker definately deserves an Oscar this year but if you have seen The Last King of Scotland you will notice that he is more in a supporting role. The Scottish doctor character has more scenes than Whitaker in the movie.
The best actor race would have been closer if Leo was nominated for The Departed.

Eddie is the front runner for supporting actor IMO. Cause he might fall under that "Lets finally give him one" category. like i hope Martin Scorsese falls into that this year

since it was able to be nominated, I think Beyonce's "Listen" is still Oscar gold.

i can't believe the outcry the dg snub is causing..or maybe it's just on the campus i'm at. Musicals are a huge thing here and all day i've heard people freaking out, even the teachers..lol it's kinda cool.

I totally agree, that and Pans not winning, I havet seen it yet, but Id heard so many great things about it that I was practically positive!

I thought The Lives of Others would win and I was right! Ha! :P

It just felt like the kind of film the Academy roots for.

I saw The Queen today and I wasn't that impressed by it. I'm really not sure how it got in for Best Picture. And I'm not completely sure I understand why Helen Mirren keeps winning all the awards. She was good---but she hasn't really lost an award yet (Critics or Academy--I think she's lost once to an actress from hard candy) and I'm not sure I understand why she isn't getting any competition from anyone. Was the category just that weak? Because I don't believe she was just that good.

Also as for the movie as a whole---I said this on another thread but I'm still deciding if the movie was subtle and understated or just slow and boring.

My mistake.

I thought she was nominated. It must have been for another award, possibly even a foreign awards show... But I do know she has been getting a lot of high praise for "The Painted Veil" and I believe this movie really showcases her true acting chops.

My choice to win the Oscar at this years Academy Awards ceremonies in the Best Actress category is, Rinko Kikuchi for her performance in Babel. As far as i'm concerned the only thing good about Babel were the parts of the film that concerned the connection to Japan. There's so much going on in those scenes, that reflect so much of Japanese society, you just have to know what to look for. A good film to watch which also illustrates Japanese society, is the original Japanese version of Shall We Dance? In the Japanese film we actually learn why the dancing is such a big deal, in a country where any kind of public displays of affection, holding hands, kissing, etc is frowned upon.

In the Best Picture category I would like to see Letters From Iwo Jima be the winner. It's big, it's epic, it has excellent production and directing values, it's heartbreaking and it has a number of good performances. I'm not that much impressed with any of the other films in that have been nominated. While I liked The Departed it's really nothing more than a remake of a film from Hong Kong called Infernal Affairs which stars two of Asia's most talented actors, Andy Lau and Tony Leung.

Wow, that's kind of mean. I wonder what these two actors have in common that would make you not like them?

I think the Oscars had some interesting moments. I really enjoyed the dance troup and Ellen was really fun. Great show.

what is Water? i don't think i have ever heard of it before.

and i saw Pan's Labyrinth today. i loved it. I would've liked to see it nominated for Best Picture

Wow what a statement... This is really not what I got from all the comments on this topic and actually I was happy Eddie lost because I don't think he deserved it (it is even more clear now that we know he stormed off the Kodak Theater after he lost). He wasn't that good in Dreamgirls IMO. Yes it was a big change from what we are used to by him but IMO Jamie Foxx was so much better and also I wanted DH from Blood Diamonds to win in the best supporting category so If my mermory is correct, both Jamis and DH (sorry cannot remember his name... they are both African-Americans.

yeah thats i was wondering about when Jennifer said that. If it was possible for the "Dreamgirls" theme to be nominated, i could see them doing that together. I can't picture all the nominated songs together lol

Yeah like when Sean Penn got an oscar when Johnny Depp did such a better job than him. I love Sean Penn and he was great in I am Sam but in Mystic River (havent seen the whole moviejust bits and pieces) he wasnt that great, Johnny madethe role of Capr. Jack Sparrow his own and he made the movie worth watching, h should have got it!
As much as I loved the Departed, I never thought it would win, it didnt seem best picture material to me, but then again none of the other movies did either!
