2007 Academy Awards Discussion

Exactly. Sometimes people get robbed and it's true but to 'pay back' the person - at the price of other great nominees for that year - is wrong. It's why I've gotten tired and disinterested in the Ocars as of late: the truly deserving people don't win it anymore, it seems. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating there, but you get what I mean.

from msnbc.com(predictions on some of the oscars...i only found these 3..maybe they didn't do th eothers yet):
And the best supporting actress winner is... - 2007 Academy Awards - MSNBC.com
And the best director Oscar goes to... - 2007 Academy Awards - MSNBC.com

...actually just 2 links..for some reason, the link for Best Actor, keeps taking me back to Best Director
ETA: and Jacob, i searched and came across this on wiki..so no idea how truthful it is, but it sounds correct:
Before 1951, the Best Picture award was given to the production company; from 1951 on, it has gone to the producer. When the film was produced anywhere other than the United States, its country and original title, if applicable, are shown in parentheses.

Dreamgirls got jipped!! Definitely should have gotten a best picture nod!! But, I know everyone has their own tatses. I thought Babel was dreadful and I will be upset if it wins best picture. I didn't have a problem with the acting, but I hated the movie.

The noms were boring overall. No major surprises. Everything was pretty much as expected.

I was surprised Leo got the nom for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed but it wasn't a total shock.

Yay for LMS and Abigail getting nominated.

Happy for Jennifer, Will, Djimon, and Naomi.

Letters From Iwo Jima - I agree. This shouldn't be in the best picture category.

Doesn't look like there will be many surprises this year. I think the main categories are pretty set as far as who's going to win.

Anybody you guys thought was left out that should have been nominated?

ETA: Can a foreign language film get a best picture nod? I mean I guess so since Iwo Jima was nominated, but just wondering about the rules.

I just hope the Oscars stick to the movies and don't get all political. We all know that most of the celebs in the audience hate Bush and think he's horrible. You don't have to preach to us about it. We get the picture. That's one reason why I don't want Al Gore to win. I don't want him to take a jab at Bush.
I wonder if Ellen can do better as a host than Jon Stewart did at last year's low watched Oscars. Hopefully, Ellen will learn from Jon's mistakes and stick to the movies.

My Reactions

Best Picture:
I'm overly escatic that Dreamgirls got snubbed, I'm kinda surprised "Iwo Jima" was nominated. But it's a good lineup

Best Director
Good category, I hope Greengrass or Marty wins

Best Actor
Leo got nominated for the wrong film, overall it's a good lineup

Best Actress
Boring

Best Supporting Actor
Another good category, I wished that Pitt was nominated

Best Supporting Actress
I'm sick & tired of hearing Jennifer Hudson name. But I'm so happy for Barazza

ScreenPlay
Borat!!!!!!!! and The Departed and Babel

Overall it was good.

Ellen was really great, I just wish they had given her more to work with, more time on screen.

I'm so glad Helen Mirren and Ryan Gosling got nominated..I hope they win. Oh and J.Hudson for Dreamgirls..she owned that film :)

I havent seen Babel yet, though I have it and it sounds interesting, did 21 Grams win anything?

It would be nice if they could perform it together, but I dont think its gonna happen, cause then itd just be about 10 minutes of singing, like a music show!

Only 18 days left!

I watched LMS last night, and I was thoroughly enjoyed it. Im not happy that grandpa was nominated for an oscar though, if it was any of the other actors Id be happy, but he didnt give that great a performance. And Abigail was great though I gotta agree, if were comparing her with Dakota then she doesnt deserve to win, though I still havent seen Dreamgirls, so I dont have an opinion about Jennifer Hudson.
Has Dakota ever been nominated for an oscar?

I want Ryan Gosling to win...but Forest will...

i absolutly have no idea how meryl streep can be noinated for the devil wears prada... Helen Mirren will win

its been a long tme coming for Scorsese but i think Clint Eastwood will win...he did direct two great films this year! even tho he wona couple of years ago...

I give Jennifer Hudson alot of props. It's easy to say all she did was sing so why does she deserve an Oscar (or whatver award). But, that's not really the case. Not any singer could have pulled the role off. It took more than just her voice to make the role.

I hated Babel, but Adriana and Rinko were good. But, I prefer Jennifer, Cate, or Abigail over them.

I think this category is going to be a showdown between Peter O'Toole and Forest Whitaker. I haven't seen Venus but O'Toole is a legend, I heard he was great in Venus, and he haven't won an Oscar after seven nominations.

I loved Catalina in Maria Full of Grace.

I would love it if LMS win but yeah I don't think it would win best picture, but I really think it have a great shot at best screenplay.

I really have to watch Babel soon, I do have it, but I havent gotten aournd to watching it!

Ive also been pimping blood diamond to all my friends, dont think this has happened since I watched 'Phantom of the Opera', and thought all the people in the world had to see it.

Its weird, I really wanna see all these movies, but I cant get ahold of them here in Iran, Im only just finishing last years nominees (except from BBM), sao I might have to wait a year before I can see most of the nominees this year! Its frustrating :(

I must say that this was one of the better award ceremonies for the Oscars in recent years. Ellen was a great host and the highlight of my night was when Eddie Murphy lost (sorry WildAtHeart). It would have been even sweeter if Jennifer Hudson lost but I guess you can't win them all.

thought this needed a bump for tonight. i can't wait to see Jennifer Hudson and what she's wearing!

i'm watching the E! preshow right now..J. Holliday is going to be performing on it! the original effie is back!!

And I really thought Clint would take it this year. Again. I'm happy Scorsese won, but I think the choice of The Departed for best movie was a little too much. Great movie, but I never thought it had a shoot to win last night.

Totally with you on that. It shouldn't be about how long the person has been in the bussiness or how great she/he was in other movies. If the person did a great job in that particular role, why not win the Oscar for tht role? That's why I'm still kind of mad at the whole Eddie Murphy not winning. The guy did an amazing job when everyone thought he would suck. And he did deserved that award.

Well....I never thought this thread would end up like this when I started it:look:

I'm not trying to generalized but for a SECOND all of the people who have been going on and on about not wanting Eddie or Jennifer to win DID sound a bit racist for a second.

IMO, Jennifer hasn't paid her dues and NEITHER did that little girl. I thought Jennifer's performance was really good and very Oscar deserving.
I DIDN'T WANT HER TO WIN because it will ruin her career. When an actor wins for their FIRST big movie role their careers go south.

From what I saw I think Cate Blanchett did great in NOAS.

Personally, I strongly dislike Eddie Murphy because I think he's too corny. I've ONLY liked him in Trading Places. And him storming off after not winning proved that he's a punk ass little bitch.

It's not like he's been nominated every years and hasn't won:rolleyes: If anyone had the right to storm off it would be Leo because he's been nominated before. Forest DESERVED to win and I'm glad he did.

Alan Arkin shouldn't have won. MARK should have won. I cheered when Eddie lost because like I said he didn't do THAT GREAT in DG.

I know that Jennifer Hudson beat like almost 800 girls for a role in Dreamgirls but she hasn't really paid her dues. If say Forest Whitaker had said that then yeah that would have been understandable because he's been starring in movies and even directing them for like 3 decades. I can't say the same about Jennifer Hudson.
I don't really think Hudson will be that much of an inspiration. I'm not trying to discredit what she's done but a lot of it was luck. If she hadn't been on American Idol, she probably wouldn't have even had a chance at getting a role in Dreamgirls. Another reason I don't think she will be a huge inspiration is because sometimes when you say you're an inspiration to a group of people it can come off as being cocky and full of yourself.

The car crash scene in Crash was the best part of the movie. It showed that people will do anything to help each other even if one is a racist. I think in situations like that people put away their differences, prejudices, and biases in order to help someone.
