2007 Academy Awards Discussion

And not to alienate anyone who is a fan of the movie, but I think that the Academy saw through some of the hype and realized that overall Dreamgirls just shouldn't be in the top 5 movies of the year.

I have read this entire thread and to me it optimizes why less than 10 African-Americans have won Academy Awards in the academy’s 79 year history. Several people have blatantly stated that they were happy Eddie Murphy lost and some stated that they wished Jennifer Hudson had also lost. I don’t post on FF a lot but I lurk enough and I frequent the movie board pretty often. I have never read that someone was glad that someone lost in such abundance. Think what you like about Eddie Murphy’s performance. I wonder where this odd hatred for him came from. To be perfectly honest, it seems like subconsciously many of you do not like to see African-Americans win. Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy do not have much in common except for the fact that they were in perhaps the most publicized and promotionalized movie ever about African-Americans. It is a ground breaking film because it had an all African-American cast and a major studio put a lot of money behind it. I realize this isn’t a big deal to many of you but it is simply unprecedented with most films involving African-Americans. Furthermore, the movie was not a comedy and was tooted for its dramatic acting. Dreamgirls was a big deal, if at the least , for the obvious reasons.

I realize that may have been controversial thing to say seeing as this is a relatively liberal board. But I doubt many of you are aware of it. There are not many threads about black or Latino people, movies, or shows on this board and there are certainly no boards about them.

When Jennifer Hudson won my emotions were mixed. I was, of course, happy for her. But I also felt sad for Angela Bassett, Cicely Tyson, and many other talented black actresses who never got the recognition they deserved and have worked at their craft for many many years. However, I have now changed my mind. I am happy for Jennifer Hudson because imagine the adversity she faced with people blatantly rooting for her to fail.

Deserving of nominations in the Best Actor catergory at this years academy, but long shots at best. Danny Huston and Ray Winstone for their work in The Proposition.
But the winner will still be Forest Whitaker for his portrayl of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Also deserving of a nomination this year, once again for The Proposition, is Nick Cave for Best Original Screenplay.

Wow! Seems like we all have the same future husband.Bizarr-o! :lol:

The Marty nom question i just know the answer to because my Uncle is a Martin Scorsese freak.

With The Departed,6 times nominated for Director and 2 times along with other people for Screenplay.

I am silently wishing that Jennifer Hudson does not win the Oscar (and my bad, since I haven't seen Dreamgirls yet), and that Abigail Breslin will win in the Supporting Category.

I havent seen a lot of the movies that would be considered oscar-worthy this year since movies come a few months late to my country, I did however see Hard Candy and as much as I wasnt very fond of the story or the ending I absoloutely adored Emily Paige (thats her name right) in this movie, she was just an amazing actress and the directing was also great and I realy expected to be nominated for at least a golden globe, but oh well!

Seriously? I have to go watch that now.

I was, however, nervous for the Devil Wears Prada girls! They were too nervous to deliver that joke and I felt so bad for them! Agh, I really hate when that happens.

Oh i didnt know that was her in Signs! And i love that movie and didn't even recognize her lol. I've never seen those other movies though. I watch GA so i probably did see her one episode, just can't remember it.

there was another Dakota movie i loved..i can't remember the title though...it co-starred Charlize Theron, Courtney Love ,Stuart Townsend , and Kevin Bacon. I remember Dakota played a girl with asthma...aggh it's going to drive me crazy until i remember the title!!! And i would reccomend H&S if oyu haven't seen it...really predictable and flawed but her performance is great...i think she did a better job than Robert De Niro in it lol. And i'm always impressed at how mature she seems in her roles and interviews...she seems to me like one of those "old soul" type of people lol
~~~
Oprah did a countdown to Oscars special...Abbie was on..Jennifer was on, and she performed at the end of the show. Kate Winslet and Judi Dench weren't there in person, they were interviewed via satalite...i was studying for a test so i'm not to sure who else was on
I liked LMS but i wasn't really impressed with Abigail. I think its cause i compare any young child actress now to Dakota Fanning. And I don't think Abigail is as good as her yet
I am rooting for Little Miss Sunshine and Will Smith..I'm also shocked Dreamgirls didn't make it but this makes competition a bit different..
Marty is the man!
The Dreamgirls performance was really, really awesome. :clap:
Pan's Labyrinth not winning Best Foreign Film was sort of WHOA! I was rooting for Guillermo all the way.
Great show. Too long. Again.
They weren't even smiling...they didn't look happy to be there. It looked awkard and tense, IMO.
Roberto Pepperoni pizza won an Oscar for being the horrible hugely overrated Life is Beautiful. It was in a foreign language.
I would definately rather see Mark Walhberg win against Eddie Murphy. It seems like Murphy was just nominated to get his career out of the dumps.
Some stupid guy on Headline News was saying that Leo was horrible in Blood Diamond.
she beat out over 700 girls for the part. Including Fantasia, i'm surprised the studio didn't go with her, since she was more well-known than Jennifer at the time. Jennifer paid her dues for the role. And the fact that she is praised so much is amazing, because J. Holliday's Effie performance on Broadway is considered one of Broadway's greatest performances. So many people were ready to criticize jennifer when she signed on for the role just because of that reason and they ended up all being surprised at how goo dher acting was. lol
And she is such a natural talent at acting, especially since she had no formal training(acting-wise i mean, she has had vocal lessons). All those reviews saying how she steals the movie away from A-listers like Jamie, Beyonce(although..being a better actress than beyonce isn't that hard lol) and Eddie.
i've always been a fan of Cate B. but i'm a bigger fan now cuz of when she was on the red carpet and she said how "extraordinary Jennifer was and how she lit up the screen." I think those are the perfect words to describe her in that movie lol
and for me personally..the ultimate praise was from J. Holliday herself. She was so negative about this movie for such a long time cuz she didn't want her Broadway version of Effie to be overshadowed. But after she finally seen it, she said how Jennifer is Effie just like she was lol.
ETA:...i think this is the longest i ever typed, not counting the times i copy & paste lol new record for me yay!...yeah little tihngs excite me:( lol
Here is the official Oscar Nomination List courtesy of MSN:
LIST
Dreamgirls not being nominated didn't surprise me... Mainly because it is a musical and while musicals have been nominated before, I.E. Chigago, the Academy likes to nominate "serious" dramas for what it's worth.
Best Picture:
The Departed
Bobby
Babel
Little Miss Sunshine
Blood Diamond
I would pick The Departed as the best picture of 2006. I haven't seen Babel, Little Miss Sunshine, or Blood Diamond but I did want to see them way before all the buzz and hype about them. LOL
Best Director:
Martin Scorsese (The Departed)
Emilio Estevez (Bobby)
Clint Eastwood (for either Flags of Our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima)
Blood Diamond
Little Miss Sunshine
I'd pick Scorsese mainly because he's due for a win and the movie was great.
Best Actor In Leading Role:
Leonardo DiCaprio(The Departed and/or Blood Diamond)
Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland)
Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Carribean 2)
Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat)
Brad Pitt (Babel)
I have only seen POTC 2 and The Departed but I've heard good things about Blood Diamond, Borat, Bable, and the Last King of Scotland. I put Brad Pitt in this category cause seems like he is more in a leading role than supporting role.
Best Actress In A Leading Role:
Can't think of any.
Best Actor In A Supporting Role:
Matt Damon (The Departed)
Jack Nicholson (The Departed)
Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland)
Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond)
Steve Carrell (Little Miss Sunshine)
I would either give it to Damon or Nicholson.
Best Actress In A Supporting Role:
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
Cate Blanchett (Babel)
Can't think of any others.
Best Animated Film:
Cars
Happy Feet
Over the Hedge
I haven't seen Happy Feet but I really liked Cars.
