sounds to me like U are losing exhaust gases- not compression. Take it to a good muffler shop- after dropping the flange there might be enough of the stud to remove it. I have a special tool for exhaust studs- they will too.

Some old cars had to shim the starter so the starter gear lined up w/ the ring gear. Measure from the mounting surface to where the gear is extended to make sure they are the same. If so, install it.If not, shim as necessary.

Find the ground wire and where it connects. You have a bad connection at the ground from rust or corrosion- remove the bolt etc, sand it down and replce. Should fix the peoblem. Also check the dimmer switch that all wires are plugged into switch well. Just in case.
