How to change starter in 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60?

I took the old starter out and bought a re manufactured oem starter. Can i just bolt the new one right up? What have I heard about checking lash with flywheel? Is this necessary and if so how do you do it because you can't see where the teeth on the starter meet the flywheel? Thanks!
 
Some old cars had to shim the starter so the starter gear lined up w/ the ring gear. Measure from the mounting surface to where the gear is extended to make sure they are the same. If so, install it.If not, shim as necessary.
