For me it has to be Seven Samurai, nothing comes close on so many levels, it looks amazing, has perfect characterisation, and is such a simple story told with so much depth. Plus it's got a bloody good battle scene - in the rain!

But I do love Battle Royale, though, that's one of those films I could watch 50 times and not get bored of it.
 
I dont think anyones mentioned 'Il Postino' which shocks me, that's a brilliant film

All About My Mother's also very good, and everything else i like'd been mentioned pretty much.
 
Such a wide variety then? Do you actually mean Japanese, Korean, HK etc? Or include Bollywood and other films from the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Asia?
 
I have 4 that stick in my mind as great movies:

1. Jean de Florette
2. Nikita
3. Seven Samurai

The fourth one however I don't know the name of, maybe someone can help.

It's about a young teenage girl in russia who plays basket ball with a younger boy (brother maybe). She starts dressing up older then her age and going out to nightclubs to pick up men (I think for sex as a prostitute can't rember).

Anyway she meets this guy, just home from Norway or Sweden, and he says he'll get her a good job back there. But it turns out he's just trafficing her for the sex industry and she enRAB up being locked up in a flat and sold to any bloke willing to pay.

Really sad movie but I was rivited by it and couldn't go to bed until it was over. This btw was months ago and I can't even remember what channel it was on but I think it was BBC2 late night (I have vague recelections of needing to go to the loo but not wanting to miss anything :o )

Anyway if it rings a bell maybe some can tell me the name.

Also I saw the Bourne Supremacy, recently, and at the end when he goes to the daughter of the people he killed I think that might have been the same actress.

EDIT- I was right it is the same girl and the movie was called Lilja 4 ever

It's amazing what you can find out when you actually try :o
