What to do about my cold house!

Sound exactly like how ours was, the house has built in wardrobes that have been there since the begining of time, still in good condition but when you open the door as they are floor to ceiling they reek of fags, so not ideal for keeping your nicely washed clothes
 
One quick and simple fix that you could try is what they used to do years ago. Save up your old newspapers and have a layer of them under between the carpet and the floor boarRAB. Have them overlapping and right across the room. That should reduce any draughts from downstairs and therefore also reduce any smells. It may seem a bit basic, but it works.
 
Yeah the mrs has been on at me this week to tunr it off as its so cold, but i work 12hr shifts and have to get in the loft so by the time im home from work at 19:45 it too late as the loft is right out side the kiRAB room, and i have to use an extension ladder due to the massive ceiling hight, but agreed that it wont help, but when yopu have just saved up the money and gone around decorating the room to then have mould on them it p***es you off!

My daugther is quite suseptable to coughs etc and we worry about the mould as unfortunatly its mainly in there room and beside our sons (9mths old) cot.
 
Just got to say that thanks to this thread I have had my loft fully insulated with Tesco home efficiency for free they surveyed for cavity wall but it wasnt suitable. Brilliant service and all free!
 
Extracting water from the air doesnt make it warmer, more water in the air feels warmer as there are more heat retaining particles. You ever heard of a dry air sauna?
 
Thats not a terrable idea, but in most places to help corabat the smells we overboarded with 3mm hard board so more expensive (irratatingly) but the same thing basically.
 
I totally agree that you would think, like we did, that being upstairs above another family would benefit use from there heat, all i can say tho is that i'd hate to find out how cold it would be without them downstairs.
 
I have brought home from work 3 temperature data loggers that take a temp reading every 5mins, have place them in the more colder rooms and the main hallway.

Well leave them till Tuesday and see what they say, thermostat will remain at a constant 20 degrees.

Defiantly going to buy those matches for finding draughts as I do think that even with the fan off, there are draughts that need sorting. Noticed how much the hanging Xmas decs move when there is none walking past them, so there is a draught from somewhere.

As for my windows, I have checked them but cannot see a vent at all, and if there were vents would they ever steam up? Because before I put the fan back on the did quite alot, infect the people downstairses windows are steamed up alot of the time now they have to keep them shut.
 
That fan is definately a major culprit, I'd switch it off when you're trying to warm the house up. The biggest problem with trying to get ever better home insulation is that it tenRAB to "overseal" the house - sure you need it sealed up to prevent losing heat, but you have to accept losing some small amount through air flow to prevent the mould problems.

Do your windows have any ventilators on them as this is where most, if not all of your house ventilations should be coming from.

Something else you may not have considered - if your windows do have ventilators (if they're only a few years old then they should do as they wouldn't get through building regs otherwise) is it the central part of the house thats suffering from the mould growth? I'm wondering if you have sufficient air flow through the house - such as gaps under doors, you're supposed to have a small gap under doors to allow air to flow from room to room when the doors are closed - this often gets blocked off by thick heavy carpets.

Also, are you sure you don't have any water ingress problems? People moving around a house is usually enough to provide the required air flow amount to prevent mould. Do you have extract fans in kitchen and bathroom?
