What to do about my cold house!

Yeah i'll have to ditch the fan for now, pain in the **** as the spur for it is in the loft! As its a switch on and forget type fan not a use when needed type, if you get what i mean.

The windows dont seem to have ventilators on them, what would they look like? Our windows are sash (spelling?) windows, if that makes any difference. Door are rarely closed in all honesty, the kiRAB are in and out of there bedroom into the front room, bathroom and toilet are always closed and are freezing but im not sure about the gap under the doors though.

Well the guy came around and it would seem that we might get the while place done now for free, should find out in 2-3 weeks. So fingers crossed it all goes well.

Just a small update, this is the spread sheet i have created to record my gas usage over the next week or so.

£5.53 in 24.5hrs is surely ridiculous!

If you heat the house to 21 degrees, why not just lower it to 18 (still comfortable) and put a jumper on. Or, heat the most commonly used room to 21 and turn off the radiators in the rest of the house?

Had a call from the council today, they are doing the cavity wall install on the 6th march so hopefully that'll make a big difference to our place!

Ventilators should look like some sort of grille, most likely along the top. Modern windows will tend to have a little flap that you can open and close to vary the airflow to some degree.

IMO - whoever came up with that fan solution to your home neeRAB their privates blowtorched. What you need is window ventilators to provide air flow (inlet air), and extractors to the kitchen (over the hob) and bathroom to prevent moist air spreading right through the house. Turabe dryers are also culprits for pumping moist air into homes too.

Is the fan not on a separate fuse in the consumer unit that you could remove?

edit - does the fan have some sort of controller so can you reduce the airflow?

It's no consolation, but when I was a kid (only one room heated), we used to wake up to ice on the windows, inside the house

I've just looked at my winter bill for last year.
£272, so pretty much £3 a day, same as you.
But that's in a modern house with insulated walls.
With the price increases, no doubt it'll be more this year

It's just stupidly expensive to keep warm and god knows how OAPs manage.

Good news mate.

Ive had real trouble from Tesco about having my place looked at. I filled out the form and got a call two days later. The guy asked me some questions and said someone will contact me to arrange an appointment.

I heard nothing for four days so phoned them back and they said they diddnt know when to contact me

So I waited another week and redid the form again. That was two weeks ago

Well I've now taken today reading and its nearly another £5...

I have now turned off the stupid fan in the ceiling because it was getting ridiculously cold when you walked under it.

I cannot believe that your council want YOU to pay for cavity wall insulation are they having a laugh.

Why should you pay to have their property improved????

We had a company who were working for the housing knock on our door in July checking that we had ours done and if we had not were going to do it within the week, but the house was done a few years ago and it was FREE on the housing, we are not on benefits but they are doing the housing stock up to a standard set out by the government and they were paying, there also going to give new Upvc double glazing next April and a few months back replaced the central heating pipes and radiators, so if our council are doing all that why is yours not .

Thanks, just hope it all goes ok.

Are tesco the cheapest people in your area? As that is almost the same amount of messing about as I've had but I had to go with the company the council use so have no choice.

oh my god............ after all this time..........and all i had to do was put a vest on........if only i'd have thought of that sooner!

I've been to other peoples houses, both terrace and detached like ours and not had to put a vest on. Im not expecting to be sweating my n**s of by any stretch of the imagination but dont want to be cold, its not like the thermostat is set to 25 degrees!

Is that pre-paid gas ? it normally the most expensive tariff a supplier has. Are you able to take the actual consumption reading and convert to kWh ?
