What Do You Mean You Haven't Seen That Movie?!

These days it resonates more if it's a top-grossing film.

Sound of Music grossed more than Titanic when adjusted for inflation  ....whereas I'm generally surprised to find people who have seen Dr Strangelove.

High-grossing classics not seen?
- The Graduate
- The Sting
- Mary Poppins
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Modern high-grossers?
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At WorlRAB End
- Meet the Fockers
- Night at the Museum
- Any of the Rush Hour movies

I've neveer seen Dr Strangelove I know it's a classic and it's on my to see list but never quite get around to seeing it.
I've tried watching 2000 AD about 5 times but can never get into it.
Also I've never seen Easy Rider or Midnight Cowboy.
All supposed to be classics. Betty blue or any of the Monty Python films.

You're missing out on some great films, then. Apart from Shakespear In Love.

What do you mean by 'hyped up'?
Citizen Kane wasn't hyped; it was almost buried by the studio when it was released. It's earned its present status as one of the greatest films ever made by being one of the greatest films ever made.
In fact, I don't recall any of those films being particularly hyped, apart from Shakespear In Love, and possibly Saving Private Ryan. No more than any other film anyway.

Yeah I agree.
The majority of those movies are talked about and honoured because they are genuinely excellent films. Shakespeare in Love, however was an exercise in awarRAB marketing by Miramax.

As long as I don't feel like I'm missing out, what does it matter to anyone else? When people tell me that, I just dig my heels in even more. I check out movies purely by how much I think I'll be interested in them, or providing it won't be something that I'll find too distressing to watch. I really resent being made to feel somehow "wrong" just because what interests the majority doesn't interest me.

And I think you know what I mean by "hyped up"...and Slumdog Millionaire could be the best movie ever but the insane amount of foaming at the mouth people did over it has put me off it possibly forever. I might very well end up watching some of those films one day - who knows - but at the moment I don't care, and so what?

I've never finished watching Traffic. I've tried a few times but ended up pausing the dvd and eventually switching it off. I will one day...

Never finished watching Lock, Stock either.

Topgun. Never got round to it, and I don't tend to watch films on my own.

I'd never conscientiously object to watching something that's received a lot of hype - there's usually a reason for it, right? Even if it turns out it is overrated, if you don't watch it, you'll never know.

Exactly. I'll see films which I think will interest me, whether hyped to the extreme or panned.

If you don't think you'll be interested, fair enough ... but to not see something simply because it's hyped seems like a pointless exercise which just means you'll be missing out.

My problem with hype is being made to feel like I'm somehow wrong for not being interested. When there's a really hot movie out the PR machine and media tend to make you feel like a freak if you aren't that bothered. That puts me off. Sometimes I will gain interest once the hype has died down and I feel like I'm actually deciding for myself and not being dictated to.

I could have written this, somtimes I actually DON'T want to like something just because of the overkill promotion. It's very offputting. TDK last year for example, i was fully ready to hate it, but was surprised it was actually good fun.

I haven't seen any Harry Potter films, Lord of the Rings, the new Star Wars films, Transformers, Star Trek.....

I tend to steer clear of the traditional Summer blockbuster types. They never really appeal to me.

Oh, and I finally watched The Dark Knight. And hated it.
