What Do You Mean You Haven't Seen That Movie?!

Not a fan of Tom Hanks then? :D

There's quite a few 'classics' I've never seen, but off the top of my head: Godfather Trilogy, many 'classics' made before 1980 (Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, etc), and Usual Suspects (had it on dvd for 4 years, never had a desire to watch it. Doubt I ever will now, as the twist got spoiled for me the other day when watching Celebrity Big Brother! lol)

Films I haven't seen:

Citizen Kane
Godfather trilogy
Gone With The Wind
Casablanca
The Dark Knight
Taxi Driver
Pyscho
Anything by Quentin Tarrentino
Star Wars
Austin Powers

I'm a big fan of Sci-Fi / Fantasy but...

I've never seen any Star Wars film all the way through. For some reason, it just doesn't appeal to me.

Same goes for Lord of the Rings. I was a voracious reader at school, but could never finish the book, so when the first film came out I was hoping to pick up something I missed as I was now older and wiser.... Guess what? I couldn't sit through the film either so I've never bothered with the sequels.

Star Wars Films.. Just not my type of film so don't wish to spend hours trying to watch only to be disappointed.

Mamma Mia .. Watched 20 mins and gave up on it and yet big fan of the likes of Murieks Wedding.

Sky + this other day so may get round to it again if worth it.

Re Slumdog.... For those not interested or don't care I went to pics to see this before before any of my frienRAB and family could comment, slag or praise it so went expecting nothing.

.... And yet came out just amazed/choked/emotional! Was a great film and so derserved the awarRAB.

Even ran out and bought the book it was based on although honestly havent got round to that!

Celebrating your own ignorance in public seems a bit shallow, and obviously there are thousanRAB of films I haven't seen... but for all that, some notable films that I really ought to have seen are:

Withnail & I
Braveheart
Gone With The Wind
Schindler's List
Slumdog Millionaire

It's not that I go out of my way not to watch them, it's just that I never made a conscious effort to see them, and when they came on TV I just didn't fancy them at the time. I probably will watch them some time, and possibly even enjoy them as I won't be greatly expecting all that much. Which is always the best way to watch a film, as you can only be pleasantly surprised.

See, I don't really get this logic. It strikes me as snobbery. I appreciate that it is annoying to have films over-hyped, and everyone bleating on about how such-and-such film is this year's "must see" (Avatar, anybody?), but I much prefer to judge a film on whether it appeals or not, not how hyped it is. Sometimes, hype and popular opinion even draws you towarRAB films you would otherwise not have considered - The Shawshank Redemption, for instance, I wouldn't have given a second thought to were it not for people saying how good it is. It's now easily one of my favourite films. Ignoring films completely because of hype is, in a lot of cases, cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Yeah, I get similar reactions too. Star Wars, Star Trek, none of them appeal to me.

You did well going for so long without discovering the twist! Never understood the logic of having DVRAB that you don't watch, though - what's the point in buying them? I, too, was spoilt before watching The Usual Suspects, but although it would have been awesome to discover the twist first-hand, I don't think knowing the twist in advance takes away from the fact that it is a fantastic film.

Wow, I'm not the only one that avoiRAB anything hyped to death then! :D

I don't know why. I don't think it's snobbery, at least on my part. It's more a case of I don't want to follow the sheep mentality, that just because someone can afford to hype it up to death, I should feel I need to go and see it. In fact it has the opposite effect on me and puts me off of it. But I don't think anyone will lose any sleep, because there are many many people out there who will go and see a film just because it's been hyped to death.

Each to their own. :)

Same here Minnimo, I'm no film snob by any means. I just get very put off by overhyped films, I don't really know why. I might eventually watch them, but it can be years :D

I didn't know about any hype over Shawshank Redemption, I just thought as it's a prison film it's probably not my sort of thing. When I eventually did watch it I loved it and still do.

Slumdog Millionaire
The Godfather Trilogy
Citizen Kane
Saving Private Ryan
Gladiator
Lock, Stock
Schindler's List
Shakespeare In Love

All massively hyped up films...and I just don't give a damn.

Me too. Saw the first one and had absolutely no desire to see the rest. LotR is just another thing I don't get.

But that in itself is a form of snobbery. It's clear that you think anyone who goes to see a hyped-up film must be a sheep, and you consider yourself to be above that. Each to their own, of course, but do bear in mind that some people will go and see/rent/buy that film because it appeals to them, not because they're following a herd.

You both admit that you may end up watching these films eventually - ie. once the hype has died down. The quality of a film doesn't change over time or inverse-proportionally to hype, so it seems a little silly to spite yourself by refusing to watch a film you might well enjoy, just because other people have enjoyed it!

Think about it: is not going to see a film you might otherwise enjoy purely because of its hype, any worse than going to see a film you probably won't enjoy just because of its hype? You're responding to the hype machine just as significantly as the "sheep" you slate :)
