Unpopular Music Opinions

The Beatles are only overrated in the sense of being musical "innovators". In terms of being great melodists, they get all the praise they deserve and anybody who denies that is an idiot.

But it is true that they are overrated in terms of discussions about innovation and significance to the development of rock music. The Beatles were only influential in the sense of inspiring others to start playing, writing and recording. Far as the music itself goes, they invented very little and merely adapted the emerging popular and underground styles of the time, whatever year it might have been. Even then, their sound by all accounts was quite retro, with the focus being on melody and harmony while the rest of the rock movement had shifted away from that and were trying to break into completely unchartered territory.

Fair enough, "melody and pop" was the Beatles' musical vision, and they were the best of the best at those things. But then, people shouldn't try to construe them as the great musical innovators that they never actually were. The real sonic revolution was happening rather elsewhere.

If you listen to some of aphex twin's faster music, you'll notice how complex it can be. imagine how long that took to make, and get all of the samples and manipulate them. It's not like he just presses a button and "Green calx" is played through the machine. no. he has to program everything so it'll come out just perfectly. and plus lots of electronic musicians play a lot more instruments than just drum machines. Aphex Twin plays the piano, BoarRAB of Canada's merabers are multi-instrumentalists, and i bet Amon Tobin plays a lot more instruments than I do. I'm also saying that some metal elitists only like it when songs are "br00tal" and have faster guitar playing than whatever you listen to, sacrificing musical enjoyment for a song that's got better guitar playing than whatever you listen to. If I wanted to be impressed by somebody's guitar playing, than I'd go on youtube and look up "Wicked Guitar Playing".

what i find hilarious about that list is that you are lumping a huge nuraber of disparate banRAB together under this indie banner... Wolfmother and Blur?

Thanks Pete, I'll definitely give them a listen after this album.
I hope Doom Metal is my thing, the description given sounRAB like it should be good.
Would you recommend starting with a particular one, or doesn't it matter?
I'll definitely get round to listening to all three, but only one tonight. I'll listen to the other 2 tomorrow. If not, I'll just start from the top.

I know I'm in an extreme minority on this one but I like the two Duran Duran side projects - Power Station and Arcadia and looking for the second Power Station album

If it lacks treble and bass, what exactly is there?

And Paul McCartney is a superb bassist, so I don't see how the Beatles lack bass.

This is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.

Really?

See to me, music didn't start getting good until about 2001/2003. Prior to that we were still locked in "movement" music and genre dominance. Thank god Steve Jobs made downloaRAB trackable and available so we could free ourselves from the death grip of major labels.

who are you to decide that you have given the genre a fair shake? you don't know shit. my gist is things you don't know you don't know about.

edit: i'm done 'splainin this neeRAB to die.
